1 Claim. (Cl. 46-226) The present invention relates to toy locomotive headlights and is more particularly directed toward toy locomotive headlights designed to simulate the appearance of diesel type railway locomotives with head light and side lanterns.
The present invention contemplates the employment of a unitary light piping device mounted in the body of a locomotive having forwardly opening apertures, the light piping device having elements which enter these apertures so as to pipe light through them and project light rays forwardly.
Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The accompanying drawings show for purposes of illustration of the present invention one embodiment in which the invention may take form, it being understood that the drawings are illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the same.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the front of a toy locomotive having the toy headlight;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the light piping member;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figures 1 and 4;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the broken line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is an elevational view taken in the direction of the arrow 5 of Figure 3, showing the light piping member;
Figures 6 and 7 are sectional views taken on the lines 6-6 and 77 respectively of Figure 4; and
Figure 8 is an end view of the light piping member.
The opaque plastic end member of a toy locomotive is illustrated at 10 in the drawings. It forms part of an outside cover for the locomotive and as here shown, it is provided with a central relatively large tubular projection 11 near the top, a smaller centrally located tubular projection 12 below the projection 11 and side lantern light projections 13--13 and 14-14. These are made to simulate in appearance the corresponding parts of a conventional full size diesel type locomotive as used on full sized railroads. The locomotive carries in a suitable manner a headlight lamp 15 located near the inner front wall of the body member 10.
2,883,796 Patented Apr. 28, 1959 The light piping member designated generally by reference character 20 is made of clear polystyrene or methyl methacrylate. The light piping member 20 has a relatively thin central portion 21 adapted to be placed closely in front of the lamp, and this portion of the light piping member carries forwardly extending rod- like elements 22 and 23 adapted to enter central holes in the projections 11 and 12 of the locomotive body member 10. The ends 22a and 22b of these elements are preferably convex as shown. Laterally of the central portion 21 of the light piping member, are forwardly extending elements 24, 24 and 25, 25 which enter central holes in the projections 13 and 14 in the body member 10. Behind these projecting elements 24 and 25, the light piping element is provided with rearwardly extending wedge shaped elements 26 which accumulate light flux so as to build up a region of brightness behind the elements and project light through them.
Since it is obvious that the invention may be embodied in other forms and constructions within the scope of the claim, I wish it to be understood that the particular form shown is but one of these forms, and various modifications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any way with respect thereto.
What is claimed is:
A toy including an opaque body having a front wall provided with centrally disposed and laterally disposed forwardly opening apertures, a transparent combination light piping and lamp simulating member, said light piping and lamp simulating member having a relatively thin flat central portion and centrally and laterally disposed forwardly projecting elements on one face thereof, said centrally disposed light projecting elements fitting into said centrally disposed apertures ,and simulating headlights, said laterally extending forwardly projecting elements fitting into associated ones of said laterally extending apertures and simulating sidelights, light collecting wedge shaped masses of transparent material on the opposite face of said light piping and lamp simulating member from said projecting elements, each having an apex central of the laterally disposed elements and a light source mounted adjacent said flat central portion.
