No. 288,128. Patented Nov. 6, 1883.

v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WHJLIAllI O. SHERARD, OF MONTEREY, SOUTH CAROLINA.
BACK-BAND HOOK FOR HARNESS.
EPiCIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 288,128, dated November 6, 1883.
Application filed March I, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. SHERARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mon,- terey, in the county of Abbeville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Hooks for Harness, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in back-band hooks for harness; and it consists in the application of a key or spring-catch to the frame of the hook, whereby the strap is securely fastened in the buckle, to prevent it from slipping by any strain which may be brought upon it. as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the buckle and hook. Fig. 2 is a sectional-view on waof Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on y y, Fig. 1.
A represents the frame of an ordinary buckle, having a hook, A, on one side and a bar, A, in the middle, with the teeth a a immediately in the middle line, 2 z.
B B are loops or ears, having in each an eye, 72.
O is a key. (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and solid lines in Fig. 2.) It has at one end a head, 0, and at the other end a spring-catch, c, which is riveted to the top ofthe key; and there is a recess, 0, on top deep enough for the spring c to fall into when pressed down for the withdrawal of the key. Key C has also in its under surface a groove, d, as seen 3 5 in the section, Fig. 3. This groove cl is immediately over the line of teeth a a on the bar A, and it will be seen in Fig. 4 that when the key 0 is forced into the eyes 2') the back-strap E will be firmly held by the teeth a a, as no amount of strain put upon the strap can sepa rate it from the teeth.
The use of the key with the teeth a a placed immediately on the middle line of the bar A, I claim as an improvement upon the backband hooks heretofore used, where the teeth are set beyond the middle line and at an angle thereto, as in such buckles the strap or trace is aptto be pulled off from the teeth.
I claim 1. Abaek-band or trace hook having a key to cover the strap and keep it upon the teeth of the middle bar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A back-band or trace hook provided with 55 perforated ears, and a middle bar having a row of vertical teeth on top, in combination with a key having a spring-catch on top and a groove underneath, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM C. SHERARD.
