INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS! Mv PETERS. Phm-um m. Wash'nginn, 04 Q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEPH A. OOULTAUS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFGIAI'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,028, dated November 6, 1883. Application filed April 12, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom itma/y concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr A. COULTAUS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Door-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in door-checks; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corrcsponding'parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my new and improved door-holder and brake as it appears when attached to the door in place for use.
Fig. 2 is asectional elevation of thesanie, taken on the line a: w of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken on the liner; y of Fig. 1. A represents the casing of the door-holder,
which casing is secured to the door 13 by the screws 0 c. The casing A is formed with the side ways, a a, in whichthe ribs b b of the checkpieces B B fit. The check-pieces B B are joined together near their lower ends by the block at, and between their lower outwardlyprojecting ends, e e, is journaled the frictionwheel 0, which is covered with the jacket f of soft rubber, which protects the floor from being scratched and marred by the roller when the door is opened and closed.
Screwed into the upper side of the block d is the spindle D, upon which is placedthe coiled spring "F. The spindleD is of sufficient length, relative to the length of the casing A, to reach up through the casing and to protrude slightly from the top plate, 9, of the casing A. Its upper end is screw-threaded, and has the ring it screwed upon it, which serves as a stop, and also as means for lifting and holding the friction-wheel up out of contact with the floor against the tension of the spring F, which acts between the top plate, of the casing and the block at, as will be understood from Fig. 2. The ringh also serves as thepressure of the friction-roller upon the floor, which adjustment may be efiected by turning the rin one way or the other, as cir cumstances require, and the ring is formed or a means for adjusting provided with the projection t, that is adapte to be engaged by the hook j, attached to tl door E, for holding the spindle D and rolle O f elevated when it is desired to throw th device out of action.
In use the device will be secured to their side of the door in such position that the j acke f of the roller 0 f will be held pressed dow with considerable force upon the floor by th action of the spring F .-in whichposition th pressure of the roller 0 f upon the floor wil serve to hold the door open at any desired p0 sition-that is, it will serve to hold the doc against any drafts of air through the building or casual closing of the door; but when it i desired to close the door the device needs l1( attention, it being only necessary to pres: against the door with sufficient force to over come the friction of the roller 0 f upon th floor. Nor does the device need any attentior in opening the door. In this; manner it wil be seen that the device acts as aconstant holder for the door. It will also be seen that in consequence of the rubber jacket f, and the easy turning of the roller Of, the floor will not be marked or in any manner injured by the device.
In winter, or when it is not desired to have the door held open, the roller 0 f will be raised off from the floor and held either by the hook j or by other suitable means, which may be quickly and easily operated for releasing the spindle for putting the device into action again. Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The casing A, adapted to be secured to the door, and formed with the ways a a, in combination with the clieclrpieces B B, formed with the ribs 79 b, adapted to fit in the ways a c, and having the roller 0 f journaled. between their lower ends, in combination with the spindle D, coiled spring F, placed upon the spindle and acting between the top plate, 9, and the block cl, the ring h, having projection hand hook j, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JOSEPH A. COULTAUS.
