The present invention generally relates to a garbage can and more particularly to a garbage can construction in which the bottom thereof is replaceable for providing a long life to the garbage can and one in which the bottom may be replaced and which may be provided with a pro tective coating to prevent corrosion thereof.
A further important object of the present invention s to provide a garbage can having an annular reinforcing ring adjacent the bottom thereof for preventing bending ofthe can due to accidental dropping thereof which occurs during the normal handling of the garbage can.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a garbage can having a removable bottom in Which the removable bottom is secured in such a manner that the structure thereof provides a reinforcement for the bottom edge of the can.
Other important objects of the present invention will reside in its simplicity of construction, ease of assembly and disassembly of the bottom and bumper ring in relation to the manbody part of the garbage can, long lasting qualities and its relatively inexpensive manufacturing and maintenance cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the `details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawingforming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a garbage can incorporating the principles of the present invention with the lower end thereof being shown in section;
Figure 2 is an exploded group perspective view illustrating the garbage can, the removable bottom and the bumper ring;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bumper ring;
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing a modified clip for securing the bottom to the can;
Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view showing the construction of Figure 4 in use; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating a removable bottom in which the bottom is provided with a coating of corrosive resistant material.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the garbage can of the present invention which includes a vertically elongated receptacle or container 12 having a generally cylindrical shape but which may be tapered upwardly and outwardly substantially in the nature of a conventional garbage can. The receptacle 12 is provided with a pair of loop-shaped handles 14 secured thereto by fastening clips or brackets 16. A removable top 18 is provided for the upper end of the receptacle 12 and the top 18 is provided with a generally U-shaped handle 20 rigid therewith.
The lower end of the receptacle 12 is provided with a removable bottom assembly generally designated by the numeral 22 which includes a bottom plate 24 having an integral channel-shaped peripheral edge defined by a downwardly extending leg 26, a reversely curved lower States Patent edge 28 and an upstanding leg 30 which extends above the plane of the plate 24 and the channel delined by the legs 26 and 28 receives the lower peripheral edge of the receptacle 12.
A bumper ring generally designated by the numeral 32 is provided exteriorly of the outer leg 30 and the bumper ring 32 includes a cylindrical wall member 34 and a horizontal flange 36. The transverse crosssectional shape of the member 34 and the member 36 is generally in the form of an angle iron member. Attached to the bottom edge of the cylindrical wall 34 is a plurality of inwardly and upwardly extending lugs 38 having the bottom thereof underlying the reversely curved portion 28 of the bottom assembly 22 and lying against the inner surface of the inner leg 26. The lugs 38 are each provided with an aperture 40 while the legs 26 and 3U are each provided with aligned apertures 42 as is the cylindrical wall with these apertures being designated by the numeral 44 for receiving fastening bolts 46 having wing nuts 48 on the inner ends thereof thus detachably retaining the bottom assembly 22 and the bumper ring 32 in position on the lower end of the receptacle 12 and also providing reinforcement for the receptacle 12 and providing supporting feet for the lower edge thereof, thus preventing the entrapment of moisture or water under the bottom plate 24.
Figures 3-5 illustrate a modied form of the present invention and specically a modified form of the bumper ring which is designated by the numeral 32 including the cylindrical wall 34', the horizontal flange 36', the aper tures 44 and having the same orientation in relation to the outer flange 30 of the bottom assembly. In this case a plurality of independent U-shaped clips 50 are provided each of which is provided with an aperture 52 in each leg thereof whereby the clips 50 straddle and bridge the lower edge of the cylindrical wall 34 and the reversely curved portion 28' of the bottom assembly 22. Fastener bolts 54 having wing nuts 56 on the inner ends thereof are then passed through the aligned apertures for securely retaining the bottom member in position and for rigidifying and reinforcing the lower end of the receptacle and forming supporting feet for supporting the lower edge of the bottom assembly in spaced relation to -a supporting surface.
Figure 6 illustrates another bottom assembly generally designated by the numeral 60 in which the bottom plate 62 is provided with a protective covering 64 which may be material normally used in undercoating or coating various metallic objects and which would be impervious to corrosion due to corrosive action of materials normally deposited in a garbage can and would thus prevent rust from occurring on the bottom plate 62 thus prolonging the useful life thereof.
The detachable bottom plate 24 with channel shaped edge is preferably constructed of rubber or a combination of rubber and plastics Ihaving resilient qualities for permitting the bottom plate to be stretched to fit cans having different size bottom edges. This permits the manufacture of a single size detachable bottom employing a single die for use with different size cans. The material from which the bottom plate is constructed will have sufficient resiliency to support the load of the articles normally placed in the can.
The present invention may be constructed of any suitable material but may be constructed of material similar to that employed in the receptacle 12 and cover 18. Each form of the invention renders the garbage can long lasting due to the removability and replacement of the bottom plate 24 and also is rigidiied in the lower edge thereof and prevented from being bent during normal or abnormal handling and also provides feet for supporting the can in slightly spaced relation to a supporting surface.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readilyloccur -to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A refuse container comprising a peripheral wall member, a removable bottom assembly, said assembly including an upwardly facing annular facing channel tele scopically receiving the lower end of the peripheral wall, a bumper Aring disposed against the outer flange of the annular channel, and fastener means extending through the channel, bottom edge of the wall and the bumper ring for retaining the same in assembled relation, said bumper ring including a laterally extending flange for protecting the wall and channel from damage by external forces, said bumper ring being provided with a plurality of lugs thereon, said lugs disposed against the inner surface of the inner tlange of the channel and secured thereto by the fastening means and spacing the bottom edge of the channel from a supporting surface.
2. A refuse container comprising a peripheral wall member, a removable bottom assembly, said assembly including an upwardly facing annular facing channel telcscopically receiving the lower end of the peripheral wall, a bumper ring disposed against the outer flange of the annular channel, fastener means extending through the channel, bottom edge of the wall and the bumper ring for retaining the same in assembled relation, said bumper ring including a laterally extending ange for protecting the wall and channel from damage by external forces, and a plurality of separate U-shaped clips bridging the channel member and a portion of the bumper ring, said fastening means extending through the legs of said clips, the bight portion of said clips spacing the bottom edge of the channel from a supporting surface.
3. A refuse container comprising a peripheral Wall, a removable one-piece bottom assembly, said assembly including an upwardly facing annular channel telescopically receiving the lower end of the peripheral wall, a bottom plate constructed of resilient stretchable material for assembly with different size cans, fastening members extending through the channel and the lower edge of the wall thereby mounting the bottom assembly on the wall, and rigid lugvmeansrmounted on the fastening members and extending under the bottom of the channel in circumferentially spaced relation for spacing the lower edge of the channel from a supporting surface and rigidifying the bottom assembly.
4. The combination of claim 3 together with a bumper ring mounted on said fastening member, said bumper -ring including a vertical flange disposed against the outer surface of the channel and a horizontal flange extending laterally outwardly therefrom in peripheral relation to the Wall, said vertical flange having apertures receiving said fastening members and provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced inwardly and upwardly extending lugs rigid with the lower edge thereof and conforming with the inner surface of the inner leg of the channel and received on the inner ends of the fastening members for rigidly mounting the bumper ring in position and providing supporting feet for the wall and spacing the lower edge of the channel from a supporting surface thus preventing accumulation of moisture beneath the bottom plate.
5. The combination of claim 3 together with a bumper ring including a vertical flange and a horizontal flange with the vertical flange being supported on the fastening members, a plurality of independent U-shaped clips with the legs of the clips engaging the inner surface of the inner leg of the channel and the outer surface of the vertical iiange of the bumper ring and being received on the fastening members thus supporting the clips rigidly in position with the bight portion of the clips extending under and below the bight portion of the channel thus forming supporting feet for supporting the bottom edge of the channel in spaced relation to a supporting surface thereby preventing accumulation of moisture under the bottom plate.
