APPARATUS FOR RAISING SUNKEN VESSELS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,586, dated October 30, 1883. Application filed January 22, 1883. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY SOHUYLER, of Sturgeon Bay, in the county of Door and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Raising Sunken Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

By the forwardmovement of the boats the 40 chain (1 is drawn beneath the vessel, and the float B is also drawn toward the vessel, so that a cradle is thus formed around the hull of the vessel, and a firm hold is obtained for the chains. 7

The scows are to be anchored in position over the vessel, as illustrated in Fig; 2, and the chains 1) are to be connected with the hoisting devices F, that are fixed upon the projecting ends of timbers f, so that adirect lift can be made.

Withthe above-described apparatus vessels sunken in deep waters can be raised without difficulty and without great expense. Ahold upon the vessel being obtained in the manner described above, the subsequent part of the Work will be comparatively easy. The main object of this invention is to facilitate getting a proper hold upon the vessel.
