S; LAKO FASTENER, GROMMET, ETC., SETTING IMPLEMENT March 3, 1959 Filed Jan. 8, 1957 m m 0 W n A M W L 1 WM w ,m S w y B United States Pat ent FASTENER, GROMMET, ETC., SETTING IMPLEMENT Samuel Lako, Chino, Calif. Application January 8, 1957, Serial No. 633,030
1 Claim. (CI. 81-15) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in implements, particularly for setting separable fasteners, rivets, grommets, etc., and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a hand tool of this character comprising a novel link and lever mechanism whereby such elements may be expeditiously and accurately applied with a minimum of effort.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a hand tool of the aforementioned character which is self-opening.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a hand tool of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a hand tool construction in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a detail view in perspective of the toggle link.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a tubular handle 5 of suitable metal. Formed integrally with one end of the tubular handle 5 is a substantially U-shaped head or frame which is designated generally by reference character 6. The members 5 and 6 may be of any desired dimensions.
The arms 7 and 8 of the frame 6 have formed therein aligned openings 9 and 10. Threadedly mounted for adjustment in the opening 9 is a removable tubular holder 11 for a removable female die 12. The opening or bore is smooth and mounted therein in a removable bushing 13. A plunger 14 is slidable in the bushing 13. The upper or free end portion of the plunger 14 is socketed for the reception of a removable male die 15. Of course, the dies 12 and 15 receive the work therebetween, as indicated at 16.
Projecting forwardly from the handle 5, in spaced relation below the frame 6, is a pair of ears 17. The ears 17 are apertured for the reception of a pin 18 for pivotally mounting a link 19 on the handle 5. Pivotally mounted on the link 19 is a tubular lever 20 of suitable metal. The pivoted end portion of the tubular lever 20 is bent or curved, as at 21, flattened and split in a manner to provide a pair of spaced, opposed plates 22 for the reception of the link 19 and the lower end portion of the plunger 14 therebetween. The plates 22 are apertured to accommodate pins 23 and 24 for pivotally connecting the lever 20, respectively, to the plunger 14 and the link 19.
Formed integrally with the free or swinging end of the link 19 is a pair of ears 25. The ears 25 are apertured to receive a pin 26 for anchoring one end of a coil spring 27 to the link 1.9. The tubular lever 20 encloses and conceals the spring 27. The other end of the spring 27 is anchored to a pin 28 in the free end portion of the lever 20.
It is thought that the operation of the tool will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the desired dies are inserted in the tool and the work is engaged between said dies. When the lever 20 is swung toward the handle 5 the members 19 and 22 function as a toggle for actuating the plunger 14 in an obvious manner. The construction and arrangement of parts is such that during the initial movement of the lever 20 the plunger 14 is moved rapidly for quickly closing the dies on the work. However, as the lever 20 approaches the end of its power stroke the mechanical advantage of the toggle arrangement rapidly increases to its maximum for completing the setting operation. As shown to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawing, the
lever 20 engageable at 29 with the link 19 for positively Y preventing the tool from closing too far. Actuation of the lever 20 toward the handle 5 for closing the tool tensions the coil spring 27. Thus, when the lever 20 is released the spring 27 immediately returns said lever to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawing for reopening the tool. The lever 20 is engageable at 30 with the plunger 14 for preventing the tool from opening too far under the influence of the spring 27.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, .since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A handle tool comprising: an elongated handle, a substantially U-shaped frame on one end of said handle, a plunger slidable in one of the arms of said frame, coacting dies on said plunger and on the other arm of said frame, a tubular operating lever having one end portion pivotally connected to said plunger, a toggle link having one end pivotally connected to the handle and pivotally connected intermediate its ends to the lever adjacent the plunger, said lever being swingable toward said handle for actuating said plunger, and means for actuating the lever for retracting the plunger, said means including a coil spring mounted and concealed in said tubular lever and having one end anchored thereto and its other end anchored to the other end of said toggle link.
