George, Bethe], and Stephen E. Tarby, Wilkinsburg, Pa., assignors to Fnited States Steel Corporation, a corporation of New ersey This invention relates to a device for descaling hot rolled wire rod prior to drawing.
The object of the invention is to improve on known rod-descaling apparatus by providing a device which is simpler than the latter in construction and less expensive to manufacture, yet equally as effective in operation.
In a. preferred embodiment, the device comprises a base with a housing or frame including a web or wall upstanding thereon having angularly disposed portions. Grooved bending sheaves are journaled on said portions to provide a circuitous path of travel for wire rod trained therearound and drawn'through the device, so as to cause sharp bending of the rod in different planes resulting in fragmentation and detachment of scale remaining adherent from the hot rolling. A door is provided in one side of the housing to give access to the sheaves for threading, and the housing is cut away at the bottom on one side to accommodate a box for collecting the scale detached. I
A complete understanding of the invention may be obtained from the following detailed description and explanation which refer to the accompanying drawings illustrating the present preferred embodiment. In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view;
Figure 2 is an end elevation;
Figure 3 is a side elevation; and
Figure 4 is an elevation of the end opposite that shown in Figure 2. I
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the device of my invention comprises generally a base-plate and a housing or frame 11 upstanding thereon. The housing includes a wall or web 12 in the form of a plate with an end 13 and a side 14. The side is composed of an entry-sheave portion 15 normal to the end 13 and de- Hector-sheave and exit- sheave portions 16 and 17, respectively, forming a dihedral right angle with each other and disposed at approximately 45 angles with portion 15. The free edge 17a of portion 17 is bent so as to be substantially parallel with end 13. End 13 is cut out at 18 and portion 17 at 19 to accommodate a box 20 disposed on base-plate 10 for collecting scale particles.
A second sheave 28 is journaled on a stub shaft 29 2,874,451 Patented Feb. 24, 1959 fixed in wall portion 16, normal-thereto but at a level below that of shaft 26. The construction is such that the grooves of sheaves 25 and 28 at their adjacent sides are substantially tangent to a common vertical line so that rod 27 tracks properly from the first sheave to the next after bending downwardly around the former as shown in Figure 3.
A third sheave 30 is journaled on a stub shaft 31 fixed in wall portion 17 normal thereto at a level between those of shafts 26 and 29. The arrangement and construction are such that the grooves of sheaves 28 and 30 are substantially tangent at their adjacent sides to a common vertical line. Thus wire rod tracks properly from the second sheave to the third after bending around the former.
Housing 11 is completed by a door 32 hinged to end 13. The door is normally held closed by a latch 33 pivoted to the bent edge 17a of side-wall portion 17, but may be opened to give access to the sheaves for ease in threading the rod therearound initially. A cut-out 34 in the top of the free edge of the door and the adjacent side wall portion permits the wire rod to be pulled straight from the top of sheave 30 by any suitable drawing means (not shown). The line along which the rod is pulled out will obviously be at a 45 angle in the horizontal plane with the line along which the rod enters guides 22 and 23.
It will be evident that rod 27, in being drawn around the sheaves 25, 28 and 30 successively, is bent back and forth in several different planes. As a result, the scale adhering thereto is thoroughly broken up and effectively detached and falls into collecting box 20. Thus the rod leaving the apparatus will be clean and scale-free, ready for drawing, coating or other processing as desired. A sloping deflector plate 35 extending along the side 14 guides any scale particles falling thereon into the box. When the box is full, it is manually removed for disposal of the collected scale and replaced by an empty box.
It will be apparent that the device of our invention is characterized by extreme structural simplicity so that it can readily be manufactured at low cost. It nevertheless performs its intended function efiectively and requires no attention or maintenance beyond routine lubrication. It requires only a small amount of floor space and can thus be installed in existing plants without necessitating extensive relocation of facilities.
Although we have disclosed herein the preferred'embodiment of our invention, we intend to cover as well any change or modification therein which may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
