FASTENING MEANS FOR BUTTONS Filed April 27, 1953 lmmw VVEN7'oE: Nils fem/90,4 7 -m1. M
United States Patent FASTENING MEANS FOR BUTTONS Nils Reinhold Niiiis, Norslinden, near Falun, Sweden Application April 27, 1953, Serial No. 351,132
'1 'Claim. (Cl. 24-103) The present invention relates to fastening means for buttons said means comprising a yoke made of wire or the like, the pointed ends of each of the shanks of said yoke being adapted to engage an aperture in the back of the button, the cross-piece of the yoke being hinged at the button and each shank of the yoke approximately at its middle being provided with a U-shaped or the like bending directed from the plane through the yoke and in the attached position of the yoke extending outside the back of the button and serving as fastening loop for a little curved portion of the fabric or other material, to which the button should be attached.
According to the invention the cross piece of the yoke is hingedly mounted behind a bridge between two apertures in the button in such manner that the portions of the yoke shanks situated between the U-shaped bending on the yoke shanks and the cross-piece of the yoke penetrate said apertures, when the yoke is turned against the button.
The annexed drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the back of a button according to the invention and comprising a cover plate and a bottom portion. Fig. 2 shows a section along the line IIII in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the button attached to the stuff indicated by dot and dash lines. Fig. 4 is a front view of the button with removed cover plate. Fig. 5 shows a section along the line V-V in Fig. 4.
According to the embodiment illustrated on the drawing the fastening member comprises two identical yoke portions 1 parallel to each other in plane and connected with each other by a cross-piece 2. The end portions 3 and 4 of each yoke portion are bent in directions away from each other, the end portions 3 being integral with the cross-piece 2, and each of the end portions 4 being formed with a point in order to facilitate their penetrating through the fabric.
According to the embodiment illustrated the button comprises a front cover plate 5 and a back bottom portion 6. The bottom portion 6 is provided with an aperture 7 for the shank 3 of each yoke portion and an aperture 8 for the shank 4 of each yoke portion. Between the apertures 7 there is a bridge 9 with a cross slot 10, in which the cross piece 2 of the yoke is mounted. One edge of ice each aperture 8 has a shoulder 11, behind which the shank end 4 is adapted to engage. After the cross piece 2 of the yoke has been situated in the slot 10 and the cover plate 5 has been secured on the bottom portion 6 the fastening yoke is turnable about the cross piece 2, when the shank ends have been released from the shoulders 1, which may be easily performed by moving the resilient shank ends 4 aside, until they are free from the shoulders 11, whereupon the fastening yoke may be folded out, for instance to the position shown by dot and dash lines in Fig. 2. In said position the yoke may be threaded into the fabric 12, which for this purpose may be folded, as shown in Fig. 2. Thereupon the operator turns the fastening yoke back to its fastening position and causes the shank ends 4 to engage behind the shoulders 11, whereupon the button is secured to the fabric 12.
What I claim is:
In a button releasably fastenable to a fabric, in combination, a base member, a front cover plate connected to said base member, and a fastening member tiltably connected to said base member and comprising a cross piece and two pins integral with said cross piece, said base member having a transversely extending recess submerged below the exposed surface of said member to form a bearing for journalling said cross piece for tilting movement of said fastening member about the axis of said cross piece between a normal rest position and a fastening position at an angle thereto, said base member including a bridge and having formed adjacent the opposite lateral edges of said bridge two pairs of substantially parallel slots, including a first pair of slots formed adjacent said recess and extending to the exterior for receiving the rear portions of the pins of the fastening member, and a second pair of slots each including an open portion extending to the exterior and a longitudinal covered portion off-set laterally and inwardly from, and communicating with, said open portion, each pin comprising a straight rear part normally disposed in a slot of said first pair, an elongated pointed end part normally disposed throughout the major extent of its length in a covered portion of a slot of the second pair and separated by said bridge and insertable into the normal position by a downward inwardly directed motion and, respectively, removable by an outward upwardly directed motion, and an intermediate part bent outwardly so as to form an are outside the bridge, said are being so dimensioned as to allow the fabric, after fastening of the button thereto by forcing the pointed ends of the fastening wire through the fabric and bringing them into engagement with the second pair of slots of the base member of the button, to extend in a plane parallel with the exposed surface of the front cover plate of the button, at a distance from the rear surface of the base member suflicient to leave a play between said rear surface and said fabric.
