I W m' ii ATTORNEYS INITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM E. EEEVEs AND HENRY o. REEVES, oE MEREDITH, KANSAS.
WEED-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,163, dated October 23, 1883.
Applicationfiled July 12, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WM. F. REEvEs and HENRY O. REEvEs, both citizens of the United States,'residing at Meredith, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weed- Cutters for Listed Corn, of which the following is a specification. reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to improvements in weed-cutters for listed corn; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the various parts of which it is composed, all of which will be hereinafter more fully eX- plained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate our invention, in which v Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional View. Fig. 2 is a plain view, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A is a broad rectangular board, or the body of the machine, which is braced by transverse bars ca, secured to the upper face thereof, and at the front said body is provided with an upwardly-inclined board, I), and eyes I) b, to which is attached the draft-bail c, by means of which the machine'is drawn over the ground.
To the upper face of the body A is attached the adjustable handle 13, which is provided with a strap-hinge, c, at its forward end, that engages a raised bar, (2, that is securely bolted to the body aforesaid.
Near the rear portion of the body, and on the upper face thereof, is hinged thereto a bail, d, the center portion of which straddles the handle and plays within a guideway, 0, formed by the upper face of the handle and a strap-plate, e, that is bolted to said handle, as shown. \Vithin this guideway is arranged a flat spring, f, that is secured to the handle at one end, while the opposite end is provided with a downwardly-bent lip, f, designed to hold the bail between said lip and plate, as shown in the drawings, whereby the tongue or handle is secured in an elevated position, and the sides f of this bail serve to prevent a lateral movement of the handle. At the rear of the body of the machine we provide a securing-hook, 9, that is pivoted to the rear edge of said body.
To the upper and lower faces of the body aforesaid are removably secured triangularshaped blocks h h, having in their forward ends perforations i c, that register with a perforation, i, made through the body A, and said perforations i i z" are designed to receive a bolt, j, that passes through the perforations 7c 70 in the forward ends of the two cutter-bars k k, which latter are bent at right angles, as at Z Z, downwardly, and having the cutting portion m m extending rearwardly, as shown in the drawings. It will thus be seen that the cutting-bars are arranged to swing outwardly, and may be adjusted to different inclinations, and when adjusted are held firmly in position by means of the bolts m m, passing through the bars, and through slots n n in the body and blocks h h, and the depth of the knives or cutter-bars may be regulated by means of the blocks. Should a greater depth be desired for the knives, the upper block can be placed on the under side with the under block, and if a shallow depth be required the under block may be removed and the forward portion of the cutter-bars set close to the under side of the body. And it will be further observed that by means of the adjusting devices herein shown and described the several parts may be regulated as necessity may require, and at the same time the device is simple in operation, durable, and cheap to manset forth.
2. The combination of the handle B, bail 1,
spring f, raised bar 01, hook g, blocks h h, cutter-bars k k, perforated as described, and body A, the whole operating as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. EEEVEs. HENRY c. EEEvEs.
