Q BY M -MM United States Patent 9 BRASSIERE STRAP Mattie Lou Robinson, Rochester, Tex.
' Application January 19, 1956, Serial No. 560,215
1 Claim. (Cl. 128-510) This invention generally relates to improved and novel construction in brassieres and more specifically provides an improved brassiere strap for providing better support for womens breast.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved brassiere strap wherein each strap includes a pair of crossed elastic members.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a brassiere strap of elastic which will stretch or give with body movements thereby providing adequate support for the breast but permitting normal body movements without strain or uncomfortable pulling of the brassiere straps.
Other objects of the present invention will reside in its simplicity of construction, comfort to the wearer, adaptation for its particular purposes and its relatively inexpensive manufacturing cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a brassiere employing the improved brassiere strap of the present invention illustrating the arrangement from the front;
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the construction of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the brassiere and brassiere straps showing their relative positions.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral generally designates a brassiere having support means 12 and 14 which are identical for supporting the brassiere in desired position on the wearer generally designated by the numeral 16.
The brassiere 10 generally includes a pair of cupshaped members 18 for receiving the breasts of the wearer 16 and includes a body encircling strap 20 having a portion 22 extending between and partially encircling the breast supporting cups 18 and a rear portion 24 extending to the rear of the wearer 16 under the arms 26 in the usual manner. The rear portion 24 is provided with an elastic portion 28 and a suitable detachable catch 30 for permitting assembly of the cups 18 on the breast of the wearer 16 in the usual manner.
Each of the supporting means 12 and 14 includes a pair of elastic straps 32 and 34 each of which are constructed of elastic material with the rear terminal ends principles of the invention.
thereof secured in spaced relation to the rear portion 24 of the body encircling strap 20 by stitching 36. The other end or forward end of each of the straps 32 and 34 is connected to diametrically opposed edges of the cups 18 as designated by the numeral 325. The elastic straps 32 and 34 are crossed as designated by the numeral 40 at the center thereof and at a position at the top of the shoulder 42 of the wearer 16 as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
It Will be understood that the crossed elastic straps specifically illustrated and described as being incorporated with brassieres may be employed with other garments employing shoulder straps for the support of bust cups such as slips, bathing suits and other similar garments. In supporting the bust cup from opposite sides thereof, more comfortable support is provided for the breast. Also, the resiliency or elasticity of the crossed straps permits freedom of movement of the shoulders and arms without undue restrain but still provides adequate support for the breast.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and de scribed, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A brassiere comprising a pair of enlarged intercom nected breast supporting cups, a body strap connected with the outer side edge of each of said cups, means detachably connecting the free ends of the body straps thereby retaining the body straps in body encircling relation, and shoulder engaging supporting means connected between each cup at the top edge thereof and one of the body straps inwardly of its free end, each of said supporting means including a pair of longitudinally continuous and independentcrossed straps of elastic material for extending over and engaging the shoulder of a wearer with the point of crossing of the elastic straps disposed adjacent the top of a shoulder, the rear terminal ends of the pair of elastic straps being connected with the body strap in spaced relation, the front terminal ends of the pair of elastic straps being connected to the upper edge of the cup in spaced relation, the independent movement and longitudinal resiliency of each elastic strap permitting freedom of movement of the shoulder and providing independent spaced points of resilient support for the breast cup.
