Description

Jan. 20, 1959 T. H. HIGHTOWER HOLDER FOR HAIR TRIMMING BLADE Filed May 31, 1957 INVENTOR.
Thoma .s H. Hlbhfower BY fly 348 2 Y W A++orne95 United States Patent HOLDER FOR HAIR TRIMMING BLADE Thomas H. Hightower, Birmingham, Ala.
Application May 31, 1957, Serial No. 662,794
3 Claims. (Cl. 30-30) This invention relates to a holder for a hair trimming blade and has for an object the provision of such a holder which shall have guard members which are positioned outwardly of and below the cutting edge of the blade whereby ample room is provided for receiving the hair to be trimmed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a holder for a hair cutting blade of the character designated which shall be adapted to hold a blade having spaced apart gauge members thereon whereby the gauge members are positioned outwardly of the clamping portions of .the holder, thus permitting firm engagement of the blade by the holder.
A further object of my invention is to provide a holder for a hair trimming blade in which the cutting edge of the blade is not obstructed by closely positioned guard members, thus permitting the user to have a better view of the cutting edge of the blade as the hair is trimmed.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a holder for a hair trimming blade which shall be simple of construction, economical of manufacture and one which shall be particularly adapted for use with hair trimming blades of the type described and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 641,076, filed February 19, 1957, and entitled Hair Trimming Blade for Safety Razors.
Holders for hair trimming blades embodying features of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
F g. 1 is a side elevational view, partly broken away and in section, showing a holder for single edge type hair trimming blade;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away and in section, taken generally along the line 11-11 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental view taken generally along the line III-III of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a Side elevational view, partly broken away and in section, showing a modified form of holder;
Fig. 5 is a fragmental view taken along the line VV of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view, partly broken away and in section, showing a further modified form of holder which is particularly adapted for use with double edge hair trimming blades;
Fig. 7 is a plan view, partly broken away, of the holder shown in Fig. 6; and,
Fig. 8 is a fragmental plan view showing a further modified form of holder.
Referring now to the drawing for a better understanding of my invention, I show in Figs. 1 through 3 a holder which is adapted for use with single edge hair trimming blades 10. The hair trimming blades 10 may be of the ype described and claimed in my aforementioned copending application in which spaced apart gauge members 11 are attached to the blade along the cutting edge thereof to determine the depth of cut made by the blade.
My improved holder comprises a handle 12 which is Patented Jan. 20, 1959 attached to a transverse member 13. As shown in Fig. 3, the transverse member 13 engages the undersurface of the blade 10 with each end of the cutting'edge 14 of the blade resting in a recess 16 provided at the forward end of the transverse member 13. The recess 16 is formed by providing hook-like members 17 at the outer ends of outwardly projecting support members 18 which are formed integrally with the transverse member 13. Connecting the outer ends of the outwardly projecting support members 18 and extending substantially parallel to the cutting edge 14 of the blade 10 is an elongated guard member 19 which is spaced forward of and below the cutting edge 14, as shown in Fig. 3.
Pivotally connected to the transverse member 13 by a suitable pivot pin 21 is a cover member 22 which may be moved into and out of clamping engagement with the blade 10 by a suitable actuating handle 23. As shown in Fig. 3, the cover member 22 terminates adjacent the gauge members 11 which are attached to the blade 10 whereby the cover member can move into direct clamping engagement with the blade 10. Also, as shown in Fig. 3, the portion of the transverse member 13 between the outwardly projecting support members 18 is cut away as at 24 a substantial distance inwardly of the cutting ed e 14 whereby there is ample room for the hair being trimmed to pass beneath the cutting edge and between the guard member 19 and the adjacent portion of the transverse member 13. Also, this opening between the transverse member 13 and the guard member permits the hair being trimmed to be in clear view of theuser.
In operation, the blade 10 is inserted in the holder and is clamped between the transverse member 13 and the cover member 22. As the holder with the blade in place is drawn downwardly against the hair to be trimmed, the gauge members 11 determine the depth of cut made by. the cutting edge 14 thereby assuring even trimming of the hair. As the hair is cut, it falls beneath the cutting edge of the blade through the opening defined between the guard member 19 and the adjacent portion of the transverse member 13. By looking in a mirror, the user can actually see the position of the cutting edge 14 rela tive to the hair being trimmed due to the wide spacing between the guard member 19 and the adjacent portion of the transverse member 13. tween the guard member 19 and the adjacent portion of the transverse member 13 provides ample room for cleaning the holder.
Referring now to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, I show a modified form of single edge blade holder which comprises a handle 12a, a transverse member 13a and a cover member 22a. Extending outwardly beneath each end of.
the transverse member 13a are outwardly projecting sup port members 26 and 27 having elongated slots 28 therein for receiving a pivot pin 29. The pivot pin 29 is se-I cured to inwardly projecting arms 31 and 32 which ex-T tend alongside the outwardly projecting support members? 26 and 27, respectively. Connecting the outer ends of' the support members 31 and 32 is an elongated guard member 19a which is spaced from the cutting edge of the blade 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. By pivotally connectmg the arms 31 and 32 to the outwardly projecting members 26 and 27, the guard member 19:: may be moved about the pivot pin 29 whereby the position of the guard member 19a relative to the cutting edge of the blade may be varied. Free pivotal movement of the arms 31 and 32 relative to the adjacent members 26 and 27 is prevented due to the frictional contact between the arm members 31 and 32 and the adjacent outwardly projecting members.
The operation of the holder shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is substantially the same as that of the holder shown in Also, the wide space be Figs. 1 through 3. The only difference being the addition of the means for adjusting the guard member 19a relative to the cutting edge of the blade.
Referring to Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawing, I show a holder which is adapted for use with double edge hair trimming blades 33 which have spaced gauge members 34 thereon which are similar in every respect to the gauge members 11 shown in Figs. 1 through 5. The holder shown in Figs. 6 and 7 comprises a handle member 36 which is secured to a transverse member 37. Connected to the handle member 36 by means of a suitable stud 38 is a cover member 39. As shown in Fig. 6, the blade 33 is clamped between the transverse member 37 and the cover member 39 with the gauge members 34 positioned outwardly of the outer portion of the transverse member 37, as shown. The transverse member 37 is provided with outwardly and downwardly extending support members 41 at each side thereof, as shown. Connecting the outer ends of the support members 41 are elongated guard members 42 which are spaced a substantial distance from the cutting edge of the blade 33.
The operation of the holder shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is substantially the same as that of the holders described heretofore. That is, the guard members 42 are positioned a substantial distance from the cutting edge of the blade and from the adjacent portion of the transverse member 37, thus defining a substantial gap beneath and forward of the cutting edge of the blade.
In Fig. 8 of the drawing I show a still further modified form of holder in which the blade is supported by a lower transverse member 13b and is clamped thereagainst by a cover member 22b. Extending outwardly from each side of the transverse member 13b are outwardly projecting members 43 and 44 which are similar to the outwardly projecting support members 18 for the solder shown in Figs. 1 through 3. The space between the outer ends of the outwardly projecting members 43 and 44 is left open whereby the gauge members 11 for the blade 10 bear directly against the head of the user to determine the depth of cut may by the blade. The outwardly projecting members 43 and 44 serve the purpose of guard members. The operation of the holder shown in Fig. 8 is similar to that of the other holders described hereinabove, the difference being that the transverse guard members are eliminated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised an improved holder for a hair trimming blade which is simple of construction, economical of manufacture and one which readily lends itself to mass production. By providing the large gap between the cutting edge of the blade and the guard member for the holder, ample room is provided for cleaning the holder as well as providing sufficient room for the discharge of hair being trimmed.
While I have shown my invention in several forms, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a holder for a hair trimming blade having gauge members on both sides thereof to determine the depth of cut made by the blade, a handle for the holder, a transverse member attached to said handle for engaging the underside of the blade at a position rearwardly of the gauge members on the underside of the blade, an outwardly projecting support member on each end of said transverse member extending forwardly of the forward edge of the transverse member for engaging and supporting the end edges of the blade forwardly of the transverse member, an elongated guard member having inwardly extending projections adjacent the ends thereof adjustably connected to the outwardly projecting members, said guard member extending substantially parallel to the cutting edge of the blade in spaced relation to the transverse member and adapted for supporting the gauge members on the underside of the blade and spacing the cutting edge from the guard member whereby hair being cut by said cutting edge is received between the blade and the guard member and is removed through the space between the transverse and the guard members, a cover member adapted to engage the side of the blade opposite the transverse member, and means holding said cover member in engagement with said trimming blade.
2. In a holder for a hair trimming blade having gauge members attached to the cutting edge thereof to determine the depth of cut made by the blade, a handle, a transverse member attached to said handle and adapted to engage one side of the trimming blade rearwardly of the gauge members, outwardly projecting supporting arms adjacent the ends of said transverse member for supporting the end edges of the blade forwardly of the transverse member, an elongated guard member extending between the suporting arms and being spaced from the transverse member, inwardly extending arms on said guard member disposed in frictional engagement with said outwardly projecting arms, means pivotally connecting said inwardly extending arms to said outwardly projecting arms whereby the position of said guard member may be adjusted relative to the cutting edge of the blade, a cover member adapted to engage the side of said trimming blade opposite said transverse member, and means holding said cover member in engagement with said trimming blade.
3. A holder for a hair trimming blade as defined in claim 2 in which an elongated slot is provided in at least one of the arms which are in frictional engagement with each other and a pivot pin extends through said slot whereby the arms are connected to each other for pivotal and longitudinal movement relative to each other.
