Description

Jan. 13, 1959 J. sHlFFMAN DISPLAY CONTAINERS Filed Jan. 8, 1958 Jerome ShiNETR United States Patent() 2,868,366 DISPLAY `CONTAINERS Jerome Shiffman, New York, N. Y.
Application January 8, 1958, Serial No. 707,827
1 Claim. (Cl. 2064S.2)
This invention Vrelates todisplay containers, and more particularly to boxes for holding articles of jewelry, such as j finger rings, watches and many other articles, `and it has for one of its object'stlie provision of a box or container which will attractively hold its contents either protectively or in` a manner of display. A container of the type to which the present invention relates is shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 687,687, filed October 2, 1957.
In the above-mentioned application is displayed a container having a body portion and a cover therefor, with the cover arranged to either protectively close the top of the body portion or the body portion may be rested on the top of the cover member when the cover member is placed in an upside Vfdo-wn position, so that in the latter position, the cover acts as a supporting easel for the body portion. In
p said application projections were provided on the bottom of the body portion and recesses were formed in the top of the cover member in a manner to selectively receive the projections on the body portion to thereby hold the body portion seated on top of the cover member in any one of a number of display positions.
The present invention relates to means by which the j body portion can be accurately centered and positioned on top of the cover member and retained in such centered position and held against lateral shifting from proper dis- ;play position.
With these and other objects to be hereinafter set forth fin view, I have devised the arrangement of parts to be [described and more particularly pointed out in the claim 1appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an illustrative (embodiment of the invention is disclosed,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the cover member of :the container;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionalview through the body of the container, the view being taken substantially on :the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the body member;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view ofthe cover member;
Fig. 5 is a view looking at the bottom of the body of the container;
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view through the container, with the body thereof resting on top of the cover member in display position, and
Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of the container, with the cover member fitted on the body, but with the conrainer shown in an inverted or upside down position.
The container as shown herein, consists of two main parts, namely, the box body or bottom member 1 and a top member or cover 2. Either or both of these parts may be made of any suitable material, such as metal, wood, plastic material or other substance, and particularly one Which can be produced by molding for economy in production. The cover 2 is provided with a top wall 3 having a hollow or arcuate concavity 4 in its upper face, the surface of the wall 3 forming the concavity being formed ice with a plurality of transversely-extending ribs or serrations 5 ending at the opposite side walls of the cover.
The body 1 of thecontainer is provided with an arcuately curved bottom wall 6, the curvature thereof being similar to the curvature of the cavity 4 in the upper wall 3 of the cover member, so that the body 1 may be rested on top of the cover member, as shown in Fig. 6 in order to display the contents of the body of the container. When the body is so rested` on the cover member, the latter forms a supporting base or easel and for this purpose it is preferably, but not necessarily, made broader at its base 15 than at its top.
t Provided on the outer face of the curved bottom wall 6 ofthe body of the container, is a plurality of conical projections 12 of such shape and spacing that either of the two pairs of projections will fit in the spaces between the serrationsor ribs 5 when the body is rested on top of the cover member and has its curved bottom 6 resting in the concavity 4. By means of the interilt of the pairs of projections 12 in any of the spaces between any of the ribs or serrations 5 on the top of the cover member, it will be apparent that when the body 1 is rested on top of the cover member 2, it can be selectively fitted on the cover member in any one of a number of different positions to enable it to assume various angles of inclination or slant to best display its contents. It will be noted that as long as one or the other of the pairs of projections 12 engages between any of the serrations 5, the body 1 of the container Will maintain any angular position in which it is placed with respect to the cover member. The cover member 2 is so shaped that it forms a broad supporting base for the body and it will therefore maintain the container from toppling when in its display position.
To facilitate the placement of the body member on Atop of the cover in display position, and to maintain the body member against lateral shift or displacement when in such position, the top of the cover member is formed with a centrally positioned upwardly-extending projection or rib 20 adapted to fit in a longittrdinallyextending lengthy groove 19 provided centrally in a thickened or reinforced portion 18 of the bottom Wall 6 of the body member 1. This arrangement is such that While the body member may be arcuately moved to position it in any desired inclination the body member will always remain centrally located on the top of the cover. Moreover, during display of the contents of the container, the body member Will not become lateraly displaced from ofiE the cover by vibration or otherwise.
In order to conveniently hold articles of jewelry or the like, such as for example, finger rings, the body of the container may be provided with the conventional filler 10 which may be pile fabric covered or otherwise constructed in any other known manner and provided with the slot 11 in which the ring or other article is fitted.
From the foregoing, the uses and advantages of the improved display lcontainer will be apparent. When in its closed position, the container appears as shown in Fig. 7, although the same is therein shown in an inverted or upside down position, and cover fits slightly telescopically over the body 1 and the contents of the container are thus fully enclosed and protected. When it is desired to display the contents of the box, such as a ring or other object fitted in the slot 11, the cover 2 is removed and placed open-side down on a supporting surface, and the body then placed with its groove 19 fitted on the rib or projection 20 and arcuately moved to the desired angle of inclination with respect to the cover to best display the contents, whereupon one or both pairs of projections 12 are fitted between the serrations 5 in the cover member to thus hold the body member at the selected angle. It will thus be apparent that the placing of the container in its position of display is merely a matter of seating the body in the concavity 4 of the cover member at the desired angle. The interengagernent of the ribor projection 20 with the groove 19 insures proper centering of the parts of the container and prevents lateral inadvertent shift thereafter.
Having described a single embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the same isv not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough -to cover all structuresfcoming Within the scope of the annexed claim.
What I claim is:
A display container having a body provided with an arcuately-shaped bottom, a cover member for the body, the cover member having an arcuate depression in its top of a shape and size to receive the arcuate bottom of the body and enable the-body to= be tted top uppermost on top of the cover member, thereby topresent the body in a display position supported by the cover member, projections provided on and extending outwardly from the outer surface of the bottom of the body, the top surface of the cover member being provided with a plurality of transverse serrations forming Vshaped grooves into which the projections are selectively fitted to thereby hold thebody in` any one of a number of tilted display positions when the body is seated on top of the cover member, the bottom of the body being provided with a central, longitudinally-extending groove of less Width than the length of the serrations and disposed at right angles thereto, and a central, upstanding rib of considerably less length than the groove provided on the top of the covervmember and in the arcuate depression therein, said rib'tting int-he groove and `slidable longitudinally therein and` holding the body against lateral shift relatively to the cover member While the body is in any of the tilted positionsin which it canbe tted on top ofthe cover member.
