P.-KEFFE R.
SHUTTER PASTE-NEE. No. 286,828. Patented Oct. 16, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT l OFFICE.
PETER KEFFER, V READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ENOS. M. REAZOR, OF SAME PLACE.
SHUTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION. forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,828, dated October 16, 1883.
' Application filed July 25, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER KEFFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to improvements upon the Patent No. 145,951, of December 30, 187 3, granted me for shutterfasteners, and is the'outcome of practical use thereof.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters designate similar parts, Figure l is a front elevation of my shutter bolt as it appears when the shutters are closed and locked. Fig. 2 is a representation of the appearance of the same when the shutters are bowed. Fig. 3 shows the appearance of the same when the shutter is unlocked prior to opening.
A represents the bolt plate; A, the segmental bolt guide or case; A segmental slot; B, segmental bolt; 13, rear locking-indent; B", front bowing-indent; G, bolt'shifting button; D, stop; D, fulcrum for same; D lockingarm; E, keeper-plate; E, keeper or staple, E", bowing-stay; F, screw-holes.
The plate A is of segmental form, corre sponding with the form of the bolt. The guide A is cast with the plate, and is provided on its top face with a segmental slot, A The bolt B is a portion of an annular flat ring, provided with an indent, B, at its upper rear edge, and an indent, B at its forward under edge, and secured in the proper position to slide in the slot A of the guide-case a button or knob, C.
A lever, D, is fulcrumed at D to the plate A, and is provided withan arm, D so adjusted relative to the bolt Bthat when thelatter is in either a locked or bowed position with the keeper-plate the arm D shall just clear the rear end of the guide-case and lie within the indent B, as shown, and when the bolt is thrown back to permit the opening of the shutters the arm will lie upon the bolt, ready to drop automatically into the indent, when the bolt is again thrown forward.
The keeper-plate E has the usual staple or keeper, E, and, owing to the segmental form of the bolt, more than the customary width is given the bolt-entrance, a stay, E being provided at the lower end of the same, upon which the indent B shall ride andinterlock for shutter-bowing.
The operation of the bolt is simple, and consists in the movement of the button 0 to the left or right as the shutters are to be locked, bowed, or released for opening.
The advantages possessed by a bolt of this form over the ordinary straight bolt is, that whether in a locked, bowed, or unlocked position, the bolt has no tendency to changethere from. The preponderating weight of the bolt projected outside of the guide-case and below the level of the same prevents a change of position automatically, and this permits an allowance of more freedom in the caseguide with less risk of binding therein.
It will be seen that the only machine-work is the riveting of the button-shank and the fulcrum-pin of the locking-hook; consequently they are cheaplyconstructed. The bolt cannot be shot back from the outside, as the hook D must be raised out of the detent B before that operation can be performed, and it thus is a double safeguard against burglars.
Having shown the construction and described the application of my improvement, I desire to secure by Letters Patent the following claims thereon:
1. In combination with a shutter-bolt of an annular segmental form, as shown, indented at B upon its rear upper edge and at 13 upon 8 5 its forward lower edge, provided with a plate and guide-case and a keeper-plate andkeeper, the locking-stop D, fulcrumed at D, having an arm, D, adapted to and locking withthe indent B of the bolt 13, whereby the bolt is 0 doubly secured, substantially as and for the purpose specified;
2. In a shutter'fastener, the bolt B, of an annular segmental form ,as described, indented at its rear upper edge, 13, and at its forward lower edge, 13, having. a plate, A, guide-case A, with transverse slot A a shifting-button, C, and locking device D, the combination of the bolt 13 with the keeper-stay E whereby the bolt is locked in position when the shut- 10o tors are bowed, substantially as and for the
