Description

S; HERRON.
MINERS PICK.
(No Model.)
Patented Oct. 16, 1883.
INVENTOI? I Affarnev UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL HEREoN, or COALTON, KENTUC Y.
MINERS PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,815, dated October "16 1883.
Application filed July 13, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HERRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goalton,
in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Picks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to miners picks, and more particularly to that class wherein the points are detachable for greater convenience in sharpening, and also having a removable socket for the handle, to facilitate changing; and to that end the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pick. Fig. 2 is asectional view of the same.
A is the head, and is provided with a transverse dovetailed slot, B, in which the handle socket O is inserted. This socket has projections 0 c, fitting the recess or slot B, and when the socket is in place it is rigidly held there by means of the set-screws a a. The socket being hollow, the wooden handle is forced therein and held in place by friction. The opposite ends of the heads A are provided with recesses E E, which receive the tongue F of the point G. The end of this tongue is rounded or circular in form, and is provided with a se- (No model.)
ries of teeth or serrations, e, and the bottom of the recess E has a similar series of serrations, 0, into whichthe serrations e mesh, so that when the point G is secured in place by the screw H the parts are practically rigid, and there is no chance for the point to shift its position when a blow is struck, as would be the case when a glancing blow was given, )rovided there were no serrations. If it should be desired to change the angle of the point G with reference to the head A, the screw H is removed and the point G- set in the desired position. The screw is then replaced, and by means of the serrations and said screw the point is rigidly held in its new position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL HERRON.
