LAWRENCE L.WIESNER Jan. 13, 1959 L. L. WIESNER DOOR SAFETY DEVICES Filed Feb. 16, 195 6 '2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. LAWRENCE WIESNER 744.1 CZWJU v ATTOBNEY United States Patent noon SAFETY DEVICES Lawrence L. Wiesner, Wichita, Kane. Application February 16, 1956, Serial N0. 565,873
1 Claim. on. 20-16) My invention relatesto a protective device for use on door frames and doors. Any door fitted in a door frameand hung on hinges in which the hinge pins are located beyond the surface or face of the door will, as the door is opened, open up a V-shaped opening between the hinge side of the door and the door frame to which the hinges are attached. This V-shaped opening sometimes becomes dangerous particularly in the case of children playing around a screen door where they might push the screen door open and unwittingly place a hand in the V-shaped opening at the hinge side of the opened door, and if the door is then released and closed, the V- opening of course will diminish and pinch and seriously damage the childs'hand. While children are quite apt: to get caught in this situation, older people can also be caught and hurt in the same manner. In view of this situation, I have provided my improved V-shaped opening protection device that is designed tocover the V- shaped opening at all times and thereby prevent pinching accidents as above mentioned. While this device is designed primarily for use in connection with screen doors, it is equally effective for use in connection with other house or building device, cabinet doors, and with slight modifications in proportion, the device is desirable for use on automobile doors and in fact is desirable for use in connection with any door where the V-shaped opening develops with the opening and closing of the door.
A further object of my invention is to provide a protective device of the kind mentioned that is simple, easy to make and install, one that is inexpensive, one that is highly efficient in its work as well as one that is neat.
and pleasing in appearance. These and other objects of the invention will be more fully described as this description progresses. drawings in which similar numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings,
Fig. 1 is an inside view of a screen door frame which is provided with my improved protective device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the screen door fram and screen, the view being as seen from line II-II in Fig. l and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the several parts, the view being as seen from the lines Ill-III in Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the several parts, the view being as seen from the line IV-IV in Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the above the same as in Fig. 2 except that the screen door is shown in an open position and illustrates the protective device as closing the V- shaped opening on the hinge side of the door.
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing a modified form of the rub plates.
Fig. 7 is a detail view showing a modified application of the device.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view through a modified Now referring to the accompanyingform of the device as applied to a door frame and screen door.
In the drawings is shown 'a door frame 10 in which if fitted on screen door 11 that is hingedly hung on the door frame 10 with hinges. 12 in the usual manner as shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive. 'The protective device is shown as consisting of an elongated strip of material 13 that is made of any desirable materialsuch as sheet metal, aluminum or ,even plastic material. The strip of material 13 is transversely curved as shown in'Figs. 25-7-8. One side edge of the material 13 is rolled as indicated at 14 to form a smooth bearing against rub plates that will later be described. The opposite side edge of the strip of material 13 is rigidly attached to one side of a plurality of hinges 15 the other side of which is rigidly attached preferably by screws 16 to the door frame 10.
The screen door is provided with aplurality of spaced apart rub plates 17 against which the rolled edge 14 of the protective strip 13 may rest and rub. The rub plates strip 13 is depressed between the several rub plates 17 I to substantially close the gap 18 that may exist between the roll 14 and the adjacent side rail of the screen door 11. I. e. the thickness of the rub plates exceeds slightly the depth of the depressions so as to prevent the edge 14 from rubbing on any part of the door except the adjacent faces of the rub plates.
In Fig. 6 an elongated rub plate 19 is substituted for the rub plate 17 as shown in all other figures of the drawings.
The protective strip 13 is notched at its ends 21 and a hooked through holes 24 in the outer end of the rub plates I 17 so that the spring 22 will put a tension on the protector strip so that the rolled edge 14 of the protector strip 13 will bear on the rub plate 17 at all times.
In all of the above mentioned cases a V-shaped opening V develops as the door 11A is opened and the protective strip 13 always covers the opening of the V as a protective means against ones hands or other objects being'entered into the V opening and then pinched as the door 11 or 11A and its associated opening V is closed. I
And now in Fig. 8 is shown a modified form of the protective device in which the protective strip 13 is made of spring material such as thin spring steel or brass would be and the supporting hinges 15 are omitted and one edge of the protective member 13 is rigidly attached preferably tacked to the doorframe 10 and the spring of the material of the protective member 13 would maintain contact of the rolled edge 14 against the rub plate 17 or 19 at all times the same as previously described, a spring 22 may be used if desired.
While the device as shown anddescribed is probably the preferred form of the device, it is to be understood that such modifications of the device as lie within the scope of the appended claims may be employed without departingfrom the spirit and intention of the invention.
