Description

March 4, 1969 P. H. CHOXNIERE DOOR LATCH Filed Aug. '7, 1967 man!! m'/ INVENTOR.
United States Patent O 3,431,000 DOOR LATCH Paul H. Choniere, 1544 Connie, Madison Heights, Mich. 48071 Filed Aug. 7, 1967, Ser. No. 658,729
U.S. Cl. 292-95 1 'Claim Int. Cl. E05c 19/10; E05b 15/02 ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to fastening devices, and particularly to fastening devices used to prevent opening of building closure means such as doors and windows, and particularly aluminum doors and windows for which this device has special features such as simplicity of construction, exceptional holding quality against force applied to open the closure, utility and ease of application, and cornpact structure.
The advent of aluminum doors and windo-ws created a problem in that often the door locks, especially, do not function properly and are subject to Ibeing opened rather easily from the outside of the home by unauthorized persons, and prior fasteners are not suitable for use with aluminum closure means, because of the construction of such closure means.
My invention solves this problem by providing twin fastening means which is readily applied to the aluminum doors or windows to prevent unauthorized opening yof said windows or doors from outside of the home or building.
It is a further object of my invention to save cost of manufacture, and simplicity of application by duplication of the outline of the fastener supports for the support mounted on the door or window and on the building or closure casing. t f
It is another and further object of my invention to pro- 'vide a small, compact fastener that is packaged as an assembly for retail sales.
Other and further objects of this my invention, will become apparent from the following description, drawing, and claim, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front view showing the invention as I have applied same to an aluminum door.
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2 2 of FIG. 1 further disclosing the application of the invention to an aluminum door.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIGURE 2 disclosing one of the twin latch bases attached to said door.
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of FIGURE 2 showing the eye portion of the latch hook attached to the other of the twin latch bases, and the latch base attached to the door casing.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view showing the latching device or lfastener in place on the aluminum door.
FIGURE 6 is a plan view showing the preferred developed blank of the twin base before forming into the T- shaped outline for use as a latch hook support.
3,431,000 Patented Mar. 4, 1969 lCC Referring now to the drawings, FIGS, l, 2, 3, 4, and 5 particularly, the improved latch is designated generally -by the numeral 10, and is -shown in operative relationship to a typical aluminum storm or screen door 11, in FIG- URE l. Said door has the usual hinges (not shown) attaching said door to the door casing 12 -which is mounted on the building or home (not shown), and -said latch means 10 is secured to the door 11, and casing 12, as shown in the figures, and in a manner to be described in detail in the following description and claims. Referring to FIG. 2, a typical door frame 13 is shown in cross section and having an outer aluminum frame member 14, and an inner door frame member 15, which support the door glass 16, which is removable so that a screen may be inserted in said door in lieu of said window glass.
The latch device 10 is comprised of twin base latch supports or brackets constructed of a single piece of sheet metal die-formed into a T 17, the cross bar 18 of said T consisting of a single thickness of sheet metal, and the vertical bar or leg 19 of said T consisting of 2 thicknesses of metal. The cross bar 18 is provided with 2 openings 21 to receive sheet metal or wood screws 20, each of said openings 21 are located adjacent the extremities 22 of said cross bar. A third opening 23 is provided in the vertical bar 19 adjacent the bottom edge 24 thereof and is adapted and arranged to receive either the hook end 25 or eye end 26 of the catch member 27. In operation, one of said twin supports 17 is placed in an appropriate location on said inner door frame member 15 with the cross bar 18 thereof mounted in vertical manner and secured to said rframe member by sheet metal screw 20 inserted through said openings 21 and threaded into said frame -member 15. The catch member 27 is secured to the other twin support 17 by means of annular eye 28 formed at one end of said catch member, said eye being inserted in opening 23 in the leg or vertical bar 19. The opposite end 29 of said catch member is of typical hook outline 30 and is adapted to be inserted in opening 23 of t-he twin support mounted on said inner door frame in snap fashion to secure said door to said casing.
FIGURE 6 discloses a preferred blank development wherein holes or openings 21 and 23 are punched in the sheet metal strip a-s the shape is blanked out by a die (not shown) and t-hen the strip is formed along line 31 and reversely bent into the 'aforedescribed T, and the holes 23 line up with each other in the T formation. The entire assembly or latch unit 10 is relatively small and may be held in the palm of the hand and packaged in a'box approximately 3A x 11A" x 31A long.
Having thus fully Vdescribed my invention, I claim:
1. An improved latch for aluminum doors and windows, comprising, in combination, twin support members constructed of a single piece of sheet metal formed into a T having at least two openings, one each located adjacent each extremity of the horizontal cross bar of said T, and a third opening adjacent the bottom end of the vertical bar of said T; one of said T twins mounted on a casing by screws inserted through said cross bar openings and threaded into said casing, and the other twin T mounted on an aluminum movable closure member by sheet metal screws inserted through said cross bar openings and threaded into said closure member, and a swinging, substantially short hooked catch member having an annular eye portion at one end thereof, `and a hook shaped portion formed in the opposite end thereof, said eye portion looped about the vertical bar opening of one of said FOREIGN PATENTS twill TS, and the hOOk portion adapted t0 Snap IlO Said Great Britain. cross bar opening of the oppositely disposed twin T to prevent opening of the closure member.
