UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEPH H. SPURRIER, 015 J OPLIN MISSOURI.
HOT-AIR MAGAZINE. Q I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,648, dated October 16, 1883.
I Application filed February 24, 1883. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Josnrrr H. Srrraurnu,
- of J oplin,in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Air Magazines; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification,
and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a stove provided with my improved hot-air attachment, Fig. 2 is a similar view of the attachment removed from the stove.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
' My invention has relation to that class of heating apparatus which consists of a drumor casing adapted to be introduced into the fire-place of a stove through the opening usually found in the top of stoves, through whichthe fuel generally is fed, and to convey the air introduced into the same by a pipe, and heated there, through another pipe into an adjoining room; and it consists of the im-' proved construction and combination of parts of such an apparatus, which may be used in any stove having an opening in its top by simply removing the covering of the said opening and inserting the apparatus, and which is adapted to carry off the cold air from the floor of the room in which the stove is located, and after heating the same to convey it to a room adjoining or above the same.
upper part of the drum is provided with a flange, F, fitting over the opening in the top of the stove, so that the apparatus may be placed in the stove without interfering with its working by simply removing the plate covering the top opening. In this manner one or more additional rooms may be heated with a comparatively small increase of fuel, a large quantityof waste heat being utilized, and the cold air be drawn off from near the fioor and conveyed, after being heated, to the adjoining room.
I am aware that apparatus has been constructed adapted to be placed in stoves or over lamps or gas-jets for the purpose of heating the air passing through them and conveying it into a room to be heated, and I do not claim such a construction, broadly; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A detachable heating apparatus for stoves, consisting of a cylindrical drum closed at the bottom, adapted to be inserted into the top of a stove, having a longitudinal partition extending from near the bottom to one side of the upper end of the drum, and having a latorally-projecting flange around its upper end, and an inlet-pipe opening near the floor at one end, and opening into the drum at the closed,
side of the partition with its other end, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affiXed my signature in Witnesses:
MARTIN E. SMITH, SIDNEY GILMORE.
