Claims priority, application Switzerland January 7, 1956 9 Claims. (Cl. 198-128) This invention relates to an adjustable throw-guiding device for use on rotary snowplows, having a throwguiding mechanism arranged over the impeller casing turnable about the axis of rotation and swivable about the vertical axis, and tted with a catcher funnel opening towards .the impeller casing, wherein, for turning the throw-guiding mechanism about the vertical axis as well as for swivelling the impeller casing about its horizontal axis of rotation, there is provided a single handwheel whose shaft can be selectively brought into driving engagement with either the throw-guiding mechanism or the impeller casing as well as with engageable and disengageable couplings.
The construction according to the inventionV ensures a simple and convenient manipulation of the throw-guiding device.
Further features of the invention will appear from the following'description and claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein there is shown by way of example one preferred form of embodiment incorporating the invention.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, the illustrated throw-guiding j device comprises the impeller casing 1, which contains the impeller and is rotatably mounted on its driving shaft 1a, with ejector branch 2 and a catcher `funnel 3 with connection 4 provided for the throw guiding-plates 5 and/or 6 and 6a and rotatable' about the funnel axis X, moreover an adjusting device for the impeller casing and the throw-guiding device. The catcher funnel 3 with bearing ring 7 is xedly arranged on the tubular casing 8 of the driving shaft 9 for the cutter cyl- .inders 10. Said shaft 9 is driven from the shaft 1a of the fimpeller through a chain drive surrounded by a protection casing 8a. The connection branch 4 is rotatably mounted in the bearing ring 7. and the lower end of its back-wall 5' `can be swivelled about a horizontal axle 13. The axle 13 is carried in a iforked member 14 arranged on a branch 15 slipped onto the connection 4. The ends of the arms of the forked member 14 away from said axle 13 carry an axle 16 which extends through the side walls of the guiding plate 5 in slots 17. The slots 17 are arcuate and concentric with the axle 13, and are each surrounded by a toothed `plate 18, wherein teeth radially running to the axle 13 -f engage'with toothed disks provided with corresponding- 2,865,491 Patented Dec. 23, 1958 counter-teeth, which disks can be pressed onto said plates 18 by means of nuts 20 itted with handles 19. By tightening the nuts 20, the throw-guiding plate 5 can be fixed in the desired swivelled position. l
When required, instead of the guiding plate 5, the throw-guiding device 6, 6a (Fig. 3) may be set onto the connection 4. This throw-guiding device also has a guiding plate 6 of substantially U-shaped cross-section. The top of the guiding plate 6 is curved and hingedly connected at 21 to the spout-bend 6a arranged thereover, the spout being also of substantially U-shaped cross-section. The spout 6a can be adjusted within wide limits. To this efect it has an arm 22 pivoted to a drawbar 23 movable in a guide 24 fixed on the plate 6, and which may be held stationary in the desired swivelled position of the spout 6a by means of a lockscrew 25. By pulling the drawbar 23 downwards, the spout 6a will =be directed upwards, thus increasing the distance thrown. 26 designates a stop sleeve which can be adjusted and yclamped on the drawbar 23 so that it is possible to have the downward movement of the spout 6a limited as desired.
The whole throw-guiding arrangement 5, 6, 6a is rotatably adjustable through 360 by means of the wormgear 11, 12 so that the throw through the connection 4 ma be directed to any side.
A handwheel 27 (Fig. 1) serves for setting the direction of throw of the guiding arrangement 5, 6, 6a. This handwheel is mounted on the rear extremity of a hollow shaft 28 which actuates the wormgear 11, 12 via 4bevel gear 29, 30 and wormshaft 31. The wheels 29', 30 (Figs. 4 and 5) of the - bevel gear 29, 30 are supported on ball bearings 32, 33 in a three-armed gearbox 34. In the downwardly extending arm 35 of the gearbox 34 another bevel wheel 35', meshing with the bevel wheel 29', is mounted on a ball bearing 36 for rotation with a worm 38 via connecting shaft 37. The worm 38 engages a wormwheel segment 39 which is rigidly connected with the impeller casing 1 so that, upon actuation of the wormgear 38, 39, the impeller casing 1 may be turned in either direction of rotation and in this manner -be set so that the path of the throw of the ejecting branch 2 is either directed the same as the funnel 3 or, as indicated in chain-dotted lines in Fig. 2, is directed beside the funnel 3.
In order to achieve separate actuation of the two wormgears 11, 12 on the one hand, and 38, 39 on the other hand, the bevel Wheels 30', 35' in constant mesh with the driving bevel wheel 29 are connected to the shafts 31 and 37 respectively by axially displaceable coupling sleeves 40, 40. Each of said two sleeves can, with a hexagonal bore, be axially displaced on a corresponding hexagonal shaft-end of the connecting shaft 31 and 37 respectively and, with a cylindrical outer surface, is axially displaceably carried in a corresponding bearing bore of the bevel wheels 30 and 35' respectively. These coupling sleeves 40, 40 have each a front head-part 40". Between this head-part and each of the front ends of theshafts 31 and 37 engaging respectively into the coupling sleeves 40, 40', there is at each a hollow space accommodating a compressed spring 41. These springs tend to keep the coupling sleeves 49, 40 in position on a cam disk 42. The end facing the cam disk 42 of each of the coupling sleeves 40, 40 and the part of the bearing bore of the bevel wheels 30 and 35 respectively adjoining that end, are provided with coupling claws 43, 43. By the cam-disk 42, the coupling sleeve 40 of the bevel wheel 30 is kept in the disengaged position, and .the coupling sleeve 40' of the bevel wheel 35' in the engaged position. By turning the cam disk 42 through an angle vof approximately degrees, so as to cause the flattened section 42 thereof to bear on the coupling sleeve 40 of sleeye i and the engagement ofb the coupling sleeve 40 of the bevel wheel 30 will be effected. The can] disk 42 is xedly mounted on a lcontrol rod 44 which axially extends through the hollow shaft 28 `and the handwheel 27 -and is provided 4with an external control lever 'd5 (Fig. 1). The attened side of the cam disk lies at the same side as the control lever 45.so that 'from the position of the latter it can be seen whichco'upling is ve'ngaged. In the position of the Control lever `shown Fig l, the coupling is engaged yfor adjustment of the impe'ller 1. By turning the control lever 45 clockwise, the coupling for the adjustment of the impeller-1 becomes disengaged, and the couplingfor the adjustment of the connection branch 4 with the throw-guiding device A5 and/ or 6, 6a will be engaged. c i

Throw guiding apparatus for use on' snow plows and comprising, in combination, a support; a throw guiding mechanism including a catcher funnel mounted on said support and throw guiding means mounted onksaid catcher funnel for turning movement about an upright axis; an impeller casing mounted on said support'for turning movement between two positions, and having a discharge spout located opposite said catcher funnel in one of said positions only; a single manually operated member; coupling means movable between two coupling positions for selectively coupling said manually operated member to said throw guiding means and to said impellet casing so that in one coupling position of said coupling means said throw guiding means is turned by said manually operated member, and in the other coupling position of said coupling means said impeller casing is moved between said two positions; andcontrol means for selectively moving said coupling means between said coupling positions thereof.

Throw'guiding apparatus for use on snow plows and comprising,in combination, a support; a throw guiding mechanism including .a `catcher funnel mounted on said support and throwy guidingmeans mounted on said catcher funnel for turning movement about an `upright axis; an impeller casing mounted on said support for turning m'ove'- rnent betweentwo positions, and having a discharge" spout located opposite said catcher funnel in one of said positions only; first transmission means includinga first member connected to said throw guiding means for turning movement therewith, a first gear, and first coupling means movable between a releasing position and a coupling plosition for connecting said first member with said first gear; second transmission means including a secondrmember connected to said impeller casing for turning movement therewith, a secondl gear, and a second coupling means movable between' a releasingy position and `a coupling position for connecting said second member withwsaid second gear; a turnable manually' operated' member including a hand wheel, avv shaft connected to saidhand wheel yfor turning movement, and a gear mounted on said shaft and meshing with said first and second gears; and control means for operating said first and second coupling means and being movable between a first control position in which said first coupling means is in said coupling position and said second coupling means is in said releasing position, and a second control position in which said second coupling means is in said coupling position and said first coupling means is in said releasing position so that in said first control position of said control means, said throw guiding means is operated by said manually operated member and in said second control position of said control member said impeller casing is turned by said manually operated member.
6. Throw guiding apparatus for use on snow plows and comprising, in combination, a support; a throw guiding mechanism including a catcher funnel mounted on said support and throw guiding means mounted on said catcher funnel for turning movement about an upright axis; an impeller casing mounted on said support for turning movement between two positions, and having a discharge spout located opposite said catcher funnel in one of said positions only; first transmission means including a first member connected to said throw guiding means for turning movement therewith, a first gear, and first coupling means movable between a releasing position and a coupling position for connecting said first member with said first gear and tending to assume one of said positions; second transmission means including a second member connected to said impeller casing for turning movement therewith, a second gear, and a second coupling means movable between a releasing position and a coupling position for connecting said second member with said second gear and tending to assume one of said positions; a turnable manually operated member including a hand wheel, a hollow shaft connected to said hand wheel for turning movement, and a gear mounted on said hollow shaft and meshing with said first and second gears; and control means for operating said first and second coupling means and being movable between a first control position in which said first coupling means is in said coupling position and said second coupling means is in' said releasing position, and a second control position in which said second coupling means is in said coupling position and said first coupling means is in said releasing position so that in said first control position of said control means said throw guiding means is operated by said manually operated member and in said second control position of said control member said impeller casing is turned by said manually operated member, said control means including a shaft member passing through said hollow shaft and having a first end portion projecting from said hand wheel, a control lever fixed on said first end portion and being turnable between two positions for turning said shaft member, and a cam secured to the other end portion of said shaft member and co-operating with said first and second coupling means.

An apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein each of said first and second transmission means includes a drive shaft, and wherein each of said first and second coupling means includes a coupling sleeve mounted on one of said drive shafts for axial movement, and connected to the respective shaft for turning movement, and spring means urging each of said sleeves to the respective coupling position, and wherein said first and second gears, respectively, are mounted on said coupling sleeves, respectively, and are connected to the respective drive shaft in said coupling position of the respective coupling sleeve.
8. An apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein said drive shafts extend at an angle of substantially to each other, and wherein said cam has a circular portion engaging one of said coupling sleeves and a flat portion engaging the other of said coupling sleeves in each of said control positions.
9. An apparatus as set forth in claim 8 wherein said gears are all bevel gears.
