. CAR-GOUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,492, dated October 9, 1883,
'Application filed August 31, 1883. (No model.)
. don and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Couplers, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companyingdrawings.
Our invention has relation to improvements in cancouplers; and the object of the device is to provide an automatic coupling for railwaycars, simple in construction and reliable and efficient in operation; and the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is aview of the coupler in position for coupling. Fig. 2 is a similar View coupled; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the slide removed from the draw-head.
A is the draw-head, and its forward end is provided with a cap, B, hinged at C.
D is a detachable pin in the body of the draw-head, which projects through an opening, 0, in the cap 13 when the latter is closed, and it is provided with an eye, a, to facilitate its removal from the top or sides of the car in uncoupling. I
E is a slide, consisting of the carriage F, having recess G, and the guide-rods H H and the follower I. This slide is mounted in the forward end of the draw-head A, and has a limited end-play. The cap B is thrown back, as shown in Fig. 1, and the link K is laid against it,with its lower end resting in the recess G of the carriage F, which has been pulled forward so its follower I projects beyond the face of the draw-head. As the cars come together the follower is struck first, which pushes the carriage back, causing the link to fall forward over the pin 1) on each draw-head, and the concussion at the same time throws the 5 caps down, securely coupling the cars, as shown in Fig. 2. To nncouple, the pin D is raised and the link freed, thereby releasing the cars. 7
i t are guides on the inner side of the cap,
to hold the link in position when elevated,
D, in combination with the link K, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The draw-head A, having hinged cap B, with opening 0, the slide E, and removable pin D, in combination with the link K, asset forth.
3. The drawheadAand slide E, having carriage F, provided with recess G, the removable pin D, and cap B, in combination with the link K, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The draw-headA, slide E, removable pin D, and hinged cap B, having guides 13 i, in combination with the link K, as set forth.
5. The combination, with the draw-head A, pin D, and link K, of the slide E, consisting of the follower I, guide-rods H H, and carriage F, having recess G, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have affixed. our signatures in presence of two witneses.
GEORGE 0. SHORT.
