Description

(Model) I. ELKINS.
APPARATUS FOR-KILLING MOSQUITOES. N0, 286,407. Patented 0%. 9,1883.
INVENTOR J 5% ATTORNEYS.
- house.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
IDA ELKINS, OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
APPARATUS FOR KILLING MOSQUITOES.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 286,407, dated Gctober 9,1883.
Application filed June 7, 1883. (Modem To all z-ohom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IDA ELKINS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New volatile oil or chemicals.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus for killing mosquitoes, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the handle in both figures being shown broken on.
A represents a tray, made of tin or other sheet metal, in which or on the bottom of which volatile oil or some volatile chemical may be placed, and this tray is held upon the upper end of the handle B.
0 represents another tray, also made of tin or other sheet metal, the bottom of which furnishes a surface on which maybe smeared volatile oils or chemicals, and this tray is secured to the side of the handle B, at right angles to the tray A, so that the device is adapted for killing mosquitoes upon the vertical walls, as well as upon the ceilings, of the The handle B is beveled OK, as shown at b, Fig. 2, at the point where the tray 0 is attached, so that the handle will stand out away from the plane described by the edges of the tray, thus enabling the edges of the tray to be placed fiat against the wall without the hands of. the user coming against the wall.
The tray 0 is, by preference, made detachable from the handle B, being attached thereto by the thumb screws (2 cl, passing through holes (1 61, which screws cl may be removed,
so that, if desired, the tray 0 may be taken off 5 andlaid aside while the tray A is being used; and the trays are both made square, with corners, so that the device will fit into the corners of the room for catching any mosquitoes that may be lodged therein. In use I smear the trays upon the inside with coal-oil or other volatile oil or chemical,
and hold the apparatus up by the handle, so as to touch the ceiling or wall and imprison the mosquito, which will be killed by the poisonous vapors, and will drop from the wall or ceiling and be caught in the trays. The flanges of the trays being a half-inch or more in width, there will be no danger of soiling the ceiling or wall with the oil or chemical, and all the danger of smashing the mosquito upon the wall is avoided, so that the apparatus is practical for its purpose, and is also cheap and convenient to handle.
Instead of making the tray A separate from 6 5 the tray 0 and attaching it to the upper end .of the handle B, it may be soldered to the upper edge of the tray 0, and both held to the ,7 handle by the screws d d.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The apparatus herein shown and described for killing mosquitoes by suffocation, consisting of the trays A 0, held at right an- 7 5 gles to each other upon the handle B, substantially as described. I
2. The handle B, beveled, as shown at b, in combination with the trays A G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The tray A, soldered to the upper edge of the tray 0, in combination with the handle B, the trays being attached to the handle by the screws d d, substantially as described.
IDA ELKINS.
