18 Claims. (Cl. 273-1) This invention relates to a game, and, more particularly, to an apparatus for playing the game.
It is an object of this invention to provide an apparatus for playing a number guessing game, for amusement purposes, and which may be easily operated by either children or adults. v
It is a further object of this invention to provide a novel apparatus for playing a game, which is compact and simple of structure, economical of manufacture, durable and highly etiicient in use.
Other objects, features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification wherein like reference numerals designate corresponding parts of the several views.

Before explaining in detail the present invention, it is to be understood, that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement lof parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of other embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood, that the phraseologyand terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not limitation.
Referring now to the drawings, the reference numeral 2 designates a supporting member comprising a hollow body having a plurality of longitudinally extending slots,

The hollow body 2 is open at the right end thereof, as viewed in Figure l, and said open end is enclosed by a cover i2 which is secured to the body 2 by means of the screws 14. The cover 12 is provided with an aperture 16 therethrough which communicates with the slot 6. As is vbest seen in Figures l and 6, the slots 4, 6, S and 10 are in communication with each other.
The left end 18 of the hollow body 2, as viewed in Figure l, is provided with an aperture therethrough, as 20, which communicates with the slot 10. The top surface 22 of the hollow body 2 is provided with a si-ghting or viewing means comprising an aperture 24, which tapers inwardly from the surface 22 and terminates in the slot 10 as shown at 25. The side wall of the body 2 which is designated as 26 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 28 which communicates with the inner slot 10.
A lirst selecting member 30 is slidably mounted in the longitudinal slot 10. As is best seen in Figures 2 and 4, one end of the selecting member 30 is reduced in height, as shown at 32 and 34. The reduced end of 30 is adapted to slide outwardly of the hollow body 2, through the slot 20 in the end of the body 2. The other end of the selecting member 3i) is adapted to abut the inner side 36 of the end cover 12 in its retracted position. A spring 38 is secured to theinner side of the end cover 12, as at 40, by a suitable retaining clip, and to the selecting member 3i), as at 42, by a suitable retaining clip. The spring 38 may be any suitable spring or biasing means adapted to bias the selecting member 30 inwardly against the inner surface of the end cover 12. As is best seen in Figures 5 and 6, the selecting member 56 is provided with a plurality of vertically disposed, outwardly extending members, as 44, which are spaced longitudinally on the inner surface thereof. A block or finger-grip 46 is secured to the outer surface of the selecting member 36, by any suitable means, as by the screws 48. The block 46 is disposed to project into the slot 28 Where it can be actuated by the finger of the operator of the apparatus.
As is best seen in Figures 1 and 6, the selecting member 30 is provided, on the reduced end that Slides out through the slot 20, on the upper surface thereof, with a set of numbers, starting with the number 1 toward the outer end, and ending with the number l0. A second set of numbers, running from Zero to 15, is provided on the upper surface of the selecting member 30, on the other end thereof, opposite to the first set of numbers. The second set of numbers on the selecting member 3l) is disposed so that when the selecting member 30 is in the position shown in Figure l, number zero will be directly under the opening 25 of the slot 24 in the top of the hollow body 2.
A second selecting member 50 is slidably mounted in the longitudinal slot 6. The selecting member 50 is provided with an aperture 52 which is disposed near the inner end of said member and in which is pivotally mounted, on a vertical axis, a latch 54 by means of the pin 56. A spring 58 has one end thereof connected to the inner side of the selecting member 56 at the point 6),
and the other end thereof to the latch 54 at the point designated 62. The spring 58 is adapted to bias the latch 54 into engagement with the inner side of the first selecting member 30. The second selecting member 5t) is providedl reset handle 66 which extends outwardly from the vertical.
In the use of the embodiment shown in Figures l-, a first player would select a number appearing in the outer set of numbers on the first selecting member 30. For example, if the number 5 is selected, the player then puts his finger on the block 46 and moves the member 36 outwardly until the number 5 is exposed, with the line between the numbers 5 and 6 being in the plane of the outer sighting surface of the hollow body end 18.V A second player then guesses that a certain number will Iappear in the sighting or viewing aperture 24, and then takes the handle 66 and moves the selecting member 50 out wardly until a desired number from the set of numbers on top of member 50 appears. the example set forth above, guesses a total of 8, he pulls the selecting member 50 outwardly until the number 3 appears, and the latch 54 will slide over the outwardly projecting members 44 and stop so as to engage themember 44 opposite the lnumber 8 in the second set of num-` bers on the selecting member 30. In order to determine whether or not the second player guessed the first playersnumber right, the second selecting member 50 is theny pushed inwardly until the surface 64 on the member 50 is` ush with the outer surface of the end cover 12. It will be seen, that by the aforegoing action, the second set of num bers on the first selecting member will be moved past the sighting or viewing aperture 24 and will stop with the number 8 exposed under the opening 25. The game can be played until' one of the players has won acertain number of times, as .for example 21 times, or the correctly guessed amounts appearing in the sighting or viewing aperture 24, when a player wins, can be added` up until one of the players gets a certain winning total, as for example 50, or a like number.
In playing the game, the players may alternate the right to guess the number selected by the first player, or a certain number of .chances maybe taken before the right to guess the number shifts, as for example, five times.v
In Figs. 7 jthrough 10 isshown a. second embodiment of the invention which comprises an elongated body generally indicated by the numeral 72, having a pair of detachably connected portions 74 and 76. AsV is shown 'in Fig. 7, the body portions 74 and 76 are detachably held together by means of a plurality of transverse rods 78,
passing through suitable apertures in said body portions, and-which are'threaded on-the ends Ythereof to'receive ythe lock nuts 80. Suitable washers as 82 may be provided to coact with the nuts S0.
As is best seen in Figs. 7 and 8, the body portion 74 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 84- on the inner side thereof, and the body portion 76 is provided with a complementary longitudinally extending slot 86. It will be seen, that the mating slots 84 and S6 coact to form a compartment in the body 72, in which is slidably mounted a selection ymeans or slide 88 which is provided with a first set of numbers, running from l to l0, on the right end upper surface, asv viewedin Fig. 7, and, asecond set of numbers, running from 0 to 15 on the left end upper surface.
The slot 86 is provided with 'an extension thereof on the left end, as 90, as viewed in Fig. 7, in which is Seated a horizontal pin 92. A spring or biasing meansl 94 has one end thereof anchored on the pin 92, and, the other end thereof anchored on the side of the selection means 88 as designated by the numeral 96. The spring 94 is adapted to normally bias the selection means 88 toward the left end of the slot 86, as indicated by the numeral 87. The spring 94 extends and retracts in the slot formed by the grooves 98 and 10) which are in the slide and body portion 76, respectively.
As is best seen in Fig. 10, the body portion 76 is provided with a slot 102 which communicates with the slot 86 to permit the side of the slide 88 to 'oe exposed to the outside of the body 72. A nger grip or depression 104 is formed in the side of the slide 88 and is accessible from the side of the body 72 through the slot 162.
The body portions 74 and 76 are provided with'A transverse apertures 108 and 110, respectively, andtheslide 38 is provided with a longitudinal slot 109, throughA which extends a locking member 112. rlhe locking member V112 is slidably mounted in said apertures 103 and 110, and slot 109, and is provided with a depending lug 114 which is normally seated ina slot 116 in the body portion i4 when the locking member 112 is in the position shown in Fig. 8. The locking member 112 is adapted to be slid to the right to the position indicated by the numeral 117, in Fig. 8, at which position the lug 114assumes the position marked 118 and is lockingly engaged in one of a plurality of notches 120 formed in the slide 8S immediately below the slot 109, so as to hold the slide in a selected position.

84 and S6, so as to expose the first set of numbers on the upper surface of the slide 8S. The slot 122 is provided with a cover means as 124 which is open at the right end.

The body portions 74 and 76 are provided with upraised parts and 132, respectively, on the upper surface thereof. The body portions 74 and 76 are also provided with the slots 134 and 136 through the upper surface thereof which coact to form an opening into the compartment holding the slide 88, so as to expose the second set of 'numbers on the left end of the slide 88, as viewed in Fig. 7.
As viewed in Fig. 7, the upper left hand surface of the body portion 74 is recessed from the side thereof, as indicated by the numeral 138. A plurality of steps 139 is providedoin the recessed area 138. The upraised part 130 is provided with a-wide transversedepression 140, from the upper surface of which projects a, plurality of aligned pins as 142. members 144 are slidably mounted, side by side,fin the depression'140. The selector members 144 are provided with a slot 143 which is adapted to seat around one of the pins 142. The slots 143 and pins 142 coact to pro- A plurality of selector vide the selector' members 144 with a stop means for transverse movement in either direction.
The outer ends of the selector members 144 are square and the inner ends thereof are provided with an axially extending guide pin 145 which is adapted to engage the inner diameter of a spring 148 which is seated in a circular slot 146 disposed in the upraised part 132. The Y springs 148 are adapted to engage the inner ends 149 of the selector members and normally bias them outwardly. The selector members 144 are numbered consecutively from 0 to 5 and are provided with cut-out portions as 150 which, when the selector members are pushed inwardly against the springs 148, will be aligned with a sighting or viewing aperture 151 in the cover plate 152, and also in alignment with the slots 134 and 136 in the body portions 74 and 76, respectively. In the retracted position the selector members 144 screen or block the aperture 151. The cover portion or plate 152 is secured to the upraised parts 130 and 132 by the screws 153. The cover plate 152 is also stepped, as at 154, in a manner similar to the recess 138.
In the operation of the embodiment of Figs. 7 through 10, the game described hereinbefore with the first embodiment may also be played. A first player would stand to the right of the body portion 72, as viewed 1n Fig. 7, and select a number from the first Set of numbers on the right end of the slide 88, as for example, the number 3. The second player would then guess a total which would comprise the number selected by the first player plus the number to be selected by the seco-nd player. If the second player guesses a total correctly, he wins the round. In the above example, the first player has selected the number 3, and if the second player guesses a total of 6, and then pushes in the selector member 3, as shown in Fig. 9, the total would show up through the sighting slot 151 in the cover plate 152. As shown in Fig. 9, the cut-out portion 150 of the selector member 3 is aligned with the sighting slot 151 in the cover plate and with the slots 134 and 136 in the body portions 74 and 76, respectively, to permit the number total 6 to appear. When the selector member 3 is released, the spring 148 will bias the selector back to the initial position. If the second player has guessed 7 or some other total number but 6, then when he pressed the selector member 3 inwardly the total 6 would appear and the second player would have lost that round.
It will be obvious that the second player must first state what total he thinks will show up when he moves a certain selector member 144 inwardly. If the total he guesses shows up he wins, if not, he loses.
After the first player has selected his number, he may lock the slide 88 in the selected position by merely moving the locking member 112 tothe right, as shown in Fig. 8, so as to engage the lug 114 in the proper notch 120. The locking member 112 is released by moving the same in the reverse direction.
What is claimed is:
l. In a device of the class described, a supporting means, a first selecting member slidably mounted on said supporting means, a first set of numbers on said first selecting member, a second set of numbers on said first selecting member, a sighting means disposed adjacent said second set of numbers, a second selecting member slidably mounted on said supporting means, and a latch pivotally mounted on said second selecting member for releasably engaging said first selecting member, whereby said second selecting member may actuate said first selecting member to move the second set of numbers on said first selecting member to a position opposite said sighting means.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting means, a first selecting member slidably mounted on said supporting means, a first set of numbers on said first selecting member, a second set of numbers on said first selecting member, a sighting means disposed adjacent said second set of numbers, a second selecting member slidably mounted on said supporting means, a latch pivotally mounted on said second selecting member, for releasably engaging said first selecting member, and a biasing means for moving the latch into engagement with the first selecting member, whereby said second selecting member may be actuated to move the first selecting member so that the second set of numbers thereon will be moved to a new position opposite said sighting means.
3. The invention as set forth in claim 2, wherein, said device is provided with a means for releasing the latch from engagement with the first selecting member.
4. The invention as set forth in claim 3 wherein, said device is provided with a means for returning the first selecting member to its initial position after the latch is disengaged therefrom.
5. In a device of the class described, a supporting means, a first selecting member slidably mounted on said supporting means, a first set of numbers on said first selecting member, a second set of numbers on said first selecting member, sighting means disposed on said supporting means adjacent said second set of numbers, a plurality of longitudinally spaced outwardly projecting members on said first selecting member, a second selecting member slidably mounted on said supporting means, a latch pivotally mounted on said second selecting member for releasably engaging the projecting members on said first selecting member, a biasing means for moving the latch into engagement with said projecting members, means for releasing the latch from said projecting members, and a means for returning the first selecting member to its initial position after the latch is disengaged therefrom.
6. In a device of the class described, a body member, a first part slidably mounted in said body member, the outer end of said first part being movable outwardly of said body member and being provided with a series of numbers which are exposed as the said first part is moved outwardly, a second set of numbers on said first part on the inner end thereof, an aperture in said body member disposed over the beginning end of said second set of numbers, a second part slidably mounted in said body member, the outer end of said second part being movable outwardly of said body member in a direction opposite to the movement of the first part, a set of numbers on said second part, a latch on said second part for releasably engaging said first part when said parts are moved relatively to each other, and means for releasing said latch from said first part.
7. The invention as set forth in claim 6 wherein, said device is provided with means for moving said first part relative to said second part.
8. In a device of the class described, a body member, a first selecting member slidably mounted in said body member, a first series of numbers of increasing degree on one end of said first selecting member, a second series of numbers of increasing degree on the other end of said first selecting member, an aperture in said body member disposed over the lowest of the numbers in said second series of numbers, a second selecting member slidably mounted in said body member, a series of numbers of increasing degree on said second selecting member, means for moving said first selecting member in one direction until a selected number from said first series of numbers thereon is positioned at a predetermined point, means for moving said second selecting member in another direction relative to said first selecting member until a selected number from the series of numbers thereon is positioned at a predetermined point, means for holding the first and second selecting members in engagement with each other, means for moving the engaged selecting members in said one direction a predetermined distance, whereby, a number on said second series of numbers on said first selecting member will appear in said aperture which will be the sum of the selected numbers on said selecting members.
9. The inventionasA set forth in claim- 8 wherein, said device isprovided with means forreleasing the holding means,- whereby, said selecting ,members may be returned to. ltheir starting` positions.
10. The invention asset forth in claim 8 wherein, said holdingwmeans'comprises, a latch pivotally mountedl on said second selectinglmember, a plurality of spaced outwardlyextendingprojections on said first selecting member, and a springfmeans for biasing=said latch into a releasable engagement With'said projections.
11. The invention assetl forth in claim 10 wherein, said device is provided with means for releasing the latch from said projections, andmeans for returning said rst selectingmember to its starting position.
12.'v In a-deviceY of -the class described, a supporting means; a rst selecting means slidablyl mounted on said supportingmeans; azirst` setzofnumbers on said rst seltectingmeangav second setv of numbers on said rst selecting means; azsighting means disposed adjacent said second .set of numbers; a second selecting means slidably mounted on said supporting-means; a third set of numbers on said second selectingmeans; means for releasably connecting said selecting means; and means for biasing said first selecting means into thenormal position, whereby when said selecting means are manually moved in a directionopposite to the effect of said biasing means, a predetermined part of said second set of numbers will appear in said sighting means.
13.-In,a device of the class described, a supportingV means; a-rst selecting means slidably mounted on said supportingmeans; arrst setof numbers on said first selectingl means; `a sight means on said supporting means adjacent said first set of numbers; a second set of num-v bers on'said rst selectingmeans; `a=sightingmeans disposedadjacent saidrsecondset of numbers; a second selecting,v means slidably mounted on said supporting means;'athirdfset ofnumberson said second selecting means; means for releasably connecting said selectingl means; and 'means for normallyv biasing said rst selecting means in one direction, whereby, when said rst selecting means and said second selecting means are manually moved in the other direction, a predetermined part of said second set of numbers on said first selecting means will appear .in said sightingy means.
14. In a device of the class described, a supporting ing said first selecting means inone direction; means fork moving, said rst selecting means manually in'the other direction, whereby, said sets ofnumbers will appear in said sighting means; a secondy selecting means slidably mounted on said Supporting means and adapted to screen said second sighting Vmeans when'in a retracted'position` and to uncover saidsecond sighting means when inan advanced position; and biasingrmeans for biasing said second selecting means into the normal retracted position.
15. In a device of the class described, a hollow body; aslidemovably mounted in the interior of said hollow body; a rst set of numbers on said slide on one end thereof; an aperture. insaid body for viewing said iirst set of numbers; a secondset of numbers on said slide on the other end thereof; a second aperture in .said body for viewing said second set of numbers; a biasing means for biasing said-slide in one direction; means for manually moving said slide in the other direction; and a means slidablymounted on said body for screening said second aperture and being manually movably so as to uncover said second aperture'to permit viewing of said second set of numbers on said slide.
16. The invention as dened in claim 15, wherein: said means for. screeningy said second aperture comprises a plurality of adjacently disposed slides which are moved by a biasing means yin one direction to close said second `aperture and which-may be manually moved in the other direction ,to uncover said second aperture.
17. The invention as defined in claim 15, wherein: said device is provided with a means for releasably lockingV said slide in an adjusted position relative to the hollow body.
18. In a device of 'the classdescribed, a hollow body: aslide movably mounted in the interiorof said hollow body; a first set of numbers on said' slide on' one'end thereof; an aperture in said body for viewing said rst set of numbers: a second'set of numbers on saidV slide on the other end'thereof; a second aperture in' said-body for viewing said second set of numbers; a biasingmeans for biasing said slide in one direction; means-'formaranally moving said slide in the other direction; `a means for screening said'second aperture including a plurality-of adjacently disposed slides whichare moved by a biasing means in one direction to close said second aperture and which may be manually moved in the other direction to uncover said second aperture; and means for releasably locking said slide in an adjusted position relative to the hollow body.
