6 Claims. (Cl. 51--238) This invention relates to a holder adapted for use in sharpening scissors.
Heretofore, a number of devices of this general type have been contemplated and most of them have been of a complicated nature involving many parts, such as intricate clamping mechanisms which have been expensive to manufacture. Due to this, most barbers today in sharpening their scissors with a stone or the like do not employ a holder but simply rest the back of the scissors against a table or the like, which generally results in a slip-shed job taking more time than it should.
Therefore, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple holder for sharpening scissors which consists of but few parts and is inexpensive to manufacture, whereby it is practical for every barber to A further object is to provide such a holder which is highly etiicient whereby scissors may be sharpened accurately with the aid thereof.
A further object is to provide a holder adapted to be easily and conveniently attached to a drawer or the like in order to sharpen scissors.
A further object is to provide such a holder in which the ears thereof perform the dual function of providing means for operating the clamping portion of the device and for providing a support for the scissors blades.
A further object is generally to improve the design and construction of holders for sharpening scissors.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects of the present invention are accomplished and the manner of their accomplishment will be readily understood from the following specification upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 4 is a perspective view on a reduced scale, showing the holder clamped on a drawer with a pair of scissors in position for sharpening, a portion only of the drawer being shown..

Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by numerals, the holder 11 of the present invention includes a pair of clamp halves 13, 15.
Referring lirst to clamp half 13, the clamp half cornprises a substantially rectangular clamping portion 17 and an upstanding twisted ear 19 integrally formed with the clamping portion intermediate the ends of the upper edge. Ear 19 is twisted relative to clamping portion 17 about an axis which extends longitudinally of lthe ear and perpendicular to the upper edge of the clamping portion. An aperture 21 is perferably, through not necessarily, provided in ear 19 as for suspending the holder from a hook or the like for storage.
Clamp half is formed in a similar manner to that 2,863,264 Patented Dee. 9, 1958 fic above described for clamp half 13 and, thus, includes a clamping portion 23, a twisted ear 25, and an aperture 27.
ln the assembled disposition of holder 11, clamp halves 13, 15 are disposed in side-by-side relationship with ears 19, 25 respectively extending upwardly through slots 31, 33 in spaced relationship and with clamping portions 17, 23 being disposed between edges 35, 37, clamping portion 17 being contacted by edge 35 and clamping portion 23 being contacted by edge 37.
Clamping portions 17, 23 are respectively provided with longitudinally extending and outwardly projecting 13, 15 from becoming unintentionally disassembled from hollow body 29.
lt will be understood that, due to the resiliency of body 29, clamp halves 13, 15 are normally urged into a disposition in which the respective lower edges 43, 45 thereof are in engagement as best shown in Fig. 2 with the clamp halves being in an upwardly diverging relationship therefrom.
Each of ears 19, 25 are provided with a notch through the upper edge thereof. Thus, ear 19 is provided with a notch 47 which defines a substantially horizontal base rest 49 and a side rest 51 disposed in a substantially vertical plane but angled relative to the faces of the ear. Notch 47 is somewhat lf-shaped with base rest 49 being longer than side rest 51. ln a like manner, ear 25 is provided with a notch 53 defining a base rest 55 and a side rest 57. The importance of the particular disposition of the notches as above described will become more apparent in the hereinafter-described use of the device as a holder.
Another item which plays an important part in the present invention is the disposition of notches 47, 53 relative to the respective sides 59, o1 of body 29. The importance of this disposition is brought out when it is realized that this determines the angle at which the scissors will be held, as will be apparent in the following description of the use of the holder 11. First, ears 19, 25 are pressed together to spread clamping portions 17, 23. With the ears thus held, the holder 11 is placed over any convenient upstanding supporting member as the side of a drawer or the like and thence the ears released to allow clamping portions 17', 23 to clamp the supporting member therebetween and secure the holder in place. Thus, in Fig. 4 is shown holdertll secured in place on the side 63 of a drawer 65. A pair of scissors, as scissors 67, is then placed in the holder for sharpening with the scissors being open so that one of the blades 69 extends substantially horizontally andthe other blade 71 is substantially perpendicular to blade 69. Blade 69 is placed in the notch 47, 53 which is away from the person doing the sharpening. For example, in this particular case illustrated in Fig. 4, assuming the person is standing to the right of the drawer as viewed in this figure, blade 69 is placed in the notch towards the inside of the drawer, i. e., notch 47, with the back edge 73 of blade 69 contacting base rest t9 and the inside of the blade 69 contacting side rest Si. The handle 75 of blade 7l is held against the side S9 as shown in Fig. 4. With the scissors 67 held in the above-described disposition, blade 69 may be sharpenedby passing a stone or the like over the cutting edge of the blade for the sharpening thereof. From the foregoing, it will be understood that ears i9, 25 perform the dual function of providing means for operating clamping portions 17, 23 and for providing supporting means for scissors during the sharpening thereof, whereby a simple but etlicient holder is possible.
It will be understood that the disposition of the notches 47, S3 determine the position in which the scissors are heldthat is, they determine the degree of tilt of the scissors and this, in turn, determines the angle at which the cutting edge of the scissors is held for sharpening. The above-mentioned tilt of scissors 69 is illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, wherein it will be seen line '77 represents the angle of tilt at which a pair of scissors would be held if placed in notch 47, whereas dotted line 79 represents the tilt at which a pair of scissors would be held when placed in `notch 53. it will be noted that these dotted lines 77, 79 extend through the respective notches and are tangent to the sides of body 29 since the blade is held in the notch and the handle of the opposite blade is held in a tangent position relative to the body. The use of notch 47 will cause the blade to ybe tilted away from the person doing the sharpening more than the use of notch 53, whereby notch 47 will give what is known as a long or knife-blade edge and notch 53 will give a narrow blade edge.
It will be understood that, in order to change holder 11 from a position for the use of one of notches 47, 53 to a position for the use of the other of the notches, it is only necessary to turn the holder around so that the desired notch is towards the inside of the drawer.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that a unique holder for sharpening scissors is provided which is characterized by simplicity, and yet a device is provided which is handy and eifective in use.
I claim:
l. A holder for sharpening scissors comprising a pair of clamp halves, each of said clamp halves including a clamping portion and an upstanding twisted ear integrally formed therewith, a substantially cylindrical and resilient hollow body formed with a pair or" spaced slots theretudinal edges with said ears respectively extending iip- Y wardly through said slots whereby the assembly is adapted to be mounted on the upstanding side of a drawer and the like with the clamping portions lbeing urged into clamping disposition with the side of the drawer therebetween and with said ears extending upwardly, each said ears being provided with a notch through the upper edge thereof to define a base rest for the back portion of one of the blades of a pair of scissors and a side rest for the side edge of said blade, said notches being so arranged relative to said body that when said assembly is clamped on the side of a drawer the assembly is adapted to hold the cutting edge of a scissor blade at a selected one of a pair of angles for sharpening, with the angle being determined by the shank of one of the scissor blades resting against one side of said body and the other blade resting in the notch adjacent thereto, one of said ears being bent outwardly more than the other to position the notch therein at a disposition to hold the cutting edge of a pair of scissors at a greater inclined angle to effect a longer bevel in sharpening the scissor blade.

A holder for sharpening scissors comprising a pair of clamp halves, each of said clamp halves including a clamping portion and an upstanding twisted ear integrally formed therewith, a substantially cylindrical and resilient hollow body formed with a pair of spaced slots therethrough, said body being interrupted along a longitudinal line to provide two adjacent longitudinal edges of the body, said clamp halves being assembled in side-by-side relationship in said cylindrical body between said longitudinal edges with said ears respectively extending upwardly through said slots whereby the assembly is adapted to be mounted on the upstanding side of a drawer and the like with the clamping portions being urged into clamping disposition with the side of the drawer therebetween and with said ears extending upwardly, each of said ears being provided with a notch through the upper edge thereof to define a base rest for the back portion of one of the blades of a pair of scissors which is held in position for sharpening with the handle of the other blade resting against said body and to define a side rest for the side edge of said one blade, one of said ears being bent outwardly relative to said body more than the other to position the notch therein at a disposition to hold the blade of a pair of scissors at a greater inclined angle to effect a longer bevel in sharpening the scissor blade.
3. A holder for sharpening scissors comprising a pair of clamp halves, each of said clamp halves including a clamping portion and an upstanding twisted ear integrally formed therewith, a substantially cylindrical and resilient hollow body formed with a pair of spaced slots therethrough, said body being interrupted along a longitudinal line to' provide two adjacent longitudinal edges of the body, said clamp halves being assembled in side-by-side relationship inv said cylindrical body between said longitudinal edges with said ears respectively extending upwardly through said slots whereby the assembly is adapted to be mounted on the upstanding side of a drawer and the like with the clamping portions being urged into clarnping disposition with the side of the drawer therebetween and with said ears extending upwardly, at least one of said ears being provided with a notch thro-ugh the upper edge thereof for holding one of the blades of a pair of scissors during the sharpening thereof.
4. A holder for sharpening scissors comprising a pair of clamp halves disposed in side-by-side relationship, each of said clamp halves including a clamping portion and an upstanding twisted ear integrally formed therewith, means coupled to said clamp halves for urging said clamping portions towards one another, whereby the holder is adapted to be mounted on the upstanding side of a drawer and the like with the clamping portions being urged into clamping disposition with the side of the drawer therebetween and with said ears extending upwardly, each of said ears being provided with a notch through the upper edge thereof to define a base rest for the back portion of one of the blades of a pair of scissors and a side rest for the side edge of said blade, said notches being so arranged relatively to said means that when said assembly is clamped on the side of a drawer the assembly is adapted to hold the cutting edge of a scissor blade at a given angle for sharpening, with the angle being determined by the shank of one of the scissor blades resting against said means and the other blade resting in the notch adjacent thereto, one of said ears being bent outwardly more than the other to position the notch therein at a disposition to hold the cutting edge of a pair of scissors at a greater inclined angle to eiiect a longer bevel in sharpening the scissor blade.

A holder for sharpening scissors comprising a pair of clamp halves disposed in side-by-side relationship, each of said clamp halves including a clamping portion and an upstanding ear integrally formed therewith, resilient means coupled to said clamp halves for urging said clamping portions` towards, one anotherA whereby the holder is adapted to be mounted on an upstanding supporting member with the clamping portions being urged into clamping disposition with the supporting member therebetween and with said ears extending upwardly, at least one of said ears being twisted and being provided with a notch through the upper edge thereof for holding one of the lades of a pair of scissors during the Sharpening thereof. 6. A holder for sharpening scissors comprising a pair of clamp halves, each of said clamp halves including a clamping portion and an upstanding ear integrally formed therewith, a substantially cylindrical and resilient hollow body formed with a pair of spaced slots therethrough, said body being interrupted along a longitudinal line to provide two adjacent longitudinal edges of the body, said clamp halves being assembled in sidebyside relationship 1 in said cylindrical body between said longitudinal edges with said ears respectively extending upwardly through said slots whereby the assembly is adapted to be mounted on the upstanding side of a drawer and the like with the clamping portions being urged into clamping disposition with the side of the drawer therebetween and with said ears extending upwardly, at least one of' said ears being twisted and being provided with a notch through the upper edge thereof for holding one of 'the blades of a 10 pair of scissors during the sharpening thereof.
