4 Claims. (CI. 20-74) This invention relates to a wall construction and more particularly to a clip for holding a metal wall baseboard in assembled condition.
In the erection of inner walls and movable partitions, difficulty is sometimes experienced in providing a neat appearing baseboard finish because of unevenness in the floor. The clip of the present invention provides an adjustable means whereby the baseboard may be arranged in substantial engagement with the floor along the entire length of the baseboard. Features of the clip are its extreme simplicity of use, and relative inexpensiveness, factors which add to its attractiveness for use in certain types of wall construction.
The main object of the invention is to provide a clip for holding a metal baseboard in-fixed position upon the lower edge of a wall.
Another object of the invention is to provide a baseboard holding clip which is adjustable whereby the baseboard may be arranged in substantial engagement with the floor along the entire length of the baseboard.
Still another object is to provide a baseboard clip which is relatively simple to use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
These and further objects and features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description and accompanying drawing wherein:

Referring now to the drawing, a clip embodying the principles of the invention comprises a generally L- shaped sheet metal article 6, the shorter leg 7 having an elongated hole 8 for affixing the clip to the floor, or other supporting base, the longer leg 9 having at the upper end a pair of oppositely arranged and inwardly bent lugs, or ears 11, and a plurality of serrations in the form of a saw-tooth edge 12 extending downwardly from each ear. A V-shaped notch 13 may be provided on the top edge of the leg 9, which notch may be used for setting a long length lath (not shown), to be plastered on both sides, as in certain types of wall construction. An integrally formed lug 14 may also be provided on the lower portion of the leg 9, for receipt of a channel type stud 16, which is adapted to support plastered metal lath (not shown), for another type of wall construction. The ears 11, are arranged to slidably maintain a spring wire clip 17 at the mid-region of the clip, each end of the wire clip having inwardly compressible portions in the form 2,863,184 Patented Dec. 9, 1958 RIG 2 of U-shaped loops 18, extending in the same direction and generally lying in the same plane.
A metallic baseboard 19, having edges 21 turned inwardly at an angle, is arranged to be supported along the lower region of a wall 22 by means of the mounted wire clip 17. In mounting the baseboard, the edges 21 are forced to enclose the clip loops 18, which being of resilient material, will be somewhat compressed thereby holding the baseboard snugly in position. The lower inturned edge 21 of the baseboard will engage one of the notches of the saw-tooth edge 12. After the baseboard is thus supported along its entire length by the clips, it is forced downwardly into engagement with the floor, the lower edge 21 of the baseboard being brought into engagement with the lowest tooth possible. In Fig. 1, a floor of uneven contour showing a gap 23 between the bottom edge of the baseboard and the floor, illustrates a condition which may be encountered in practice. With the clip of the invention, and to correct such condition it is only necessary to push downwardly upon the mounted baseboard so that the lower edge 21 will successively engage and be held by the lowermost tooth of the saw-tooth edge 12. In such manner the inherent resiliency of the metallic baseboard will be used to allow the baseboard to be sprung a suflicient amount for engagement with the floor along its entire length.
The clip of the invention is thus adjustable to provide easy installation of a metallic baseboard, and to eifect a neat appearing trim, even with floors of uneven contour.
The foregoing description has been given in detail without thought of limitation since the inventive principles involved are capable of assuming other physical embodiments without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A base clip for use in wall constructions comprising in combination a generally L-shaped article the first leg of which is arranged for affixing the clip to a floor, the second leg of which has a bent lug and a saw-tooth edge extending downwardly from the lug, and a spring wire clip slidably maintained by the bent lug and adapted to be in compressive engagement with a baseboard to hold the baseboard against the wall, one edge of the baseboard being engageable with the saw-tooth edge to prevent upward movement of the baseboard.
2. A base clip for use in wall constructions comprising in combination a generally L-shaped article the first leg of which is arranged for affixing the clip to a floor, the second leg of which has a pair of oppositely disposed bent ears near the upper end of the leg and a sawtooth edge extending downwardly from each ear, and a pair of spring wire clips one each of which is slidably supported in an ear, said wire clips having inwardly compressible end portions adapted for enclosure by bent edge portions of a baseboard, said saw-tooth edges arranged for engagement by the lower bent. edge portion of the baseboard to prevent upward movement of the baseboard.
3. A base clip for use in wall constructions comprising in combination a generally L-shaped article the first leg of which is arranged for affixing the clip to a floor, the second leg of which has a pair of oppositely disposed and inwardly bent ears near the upper end of the leg and a saw-tooth edge extending downwardly from each ear, and a pair of spring wire clips arranged one on each side of the second leg, said wire clips having a straight middle portion with U-shaped ends, said middle portion being slidably maintainable for vertical movement by a bent ear, said wire clips being adapted for insertion in bent edge portions of a baseboard whereby the wire clip will hold the baseboard snugly against the lower portion of'the wall while the lower bent edge portion of the baseboard will engage one of the teeth of a saw-tooth edge to maintain the baseboard in engagement with the floor. y
