(ci. 292-224) This invention relates to a door lock and more particularly to an improved door lock of the so-called unit type which is primarily intended for use on communicating doors; this term being generally applied to doors between adjoining bedrooms, offices, hotel rooms and the like.
Such locks are generally provided with a turnpiece or a key operated cylinder lock in each knob which is each adapted to operate a separate dogging mechanism for dogging the opposite knob against operation. When a turnpiece is provided in each knob, the occupant of either of two adjoining rooms can selectively prevent entry therein to or from the other of said rooms. With locks having a key operated cylinder lock in each knob, either or both of said knobs can be rendered inoperative I only by a person possessing the proper key.
The invention disclosed in this application is embodied in the clogging mechanisms which are operable either by a turnpiece or a cylinder lock to dog the knob shanks of the lock against operation, and has as its primary object the provision of an improved and greatly simplified dogging mechanism for each of said knob shanks which utilizes the rollbacks of the lock for effecting the clogging of the said shanks.
A further object of this invention is to provide a unit lock in which the dogging mechanisms for the knobs thereof consist of identical parts which are constructed in such a manner that they may be used in the opposite knob shanks of the lock in Ireverse relationship.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:

The manufacturer of any particular line of door locks generally uses a basic lock housing for each of the locks produced and provides different elements which are insertable into said locks to change the locking functions thereof. Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the frame of the unit lock includes an elongated housing 5 having a front wall 6 and rearwardly extending side walls 7 7. A tubular knob shank bearing sleeve 8 extendstransversely through the side walls of the housingadjacent the rear end thereof and is secured to said housing by means of pins 9 9 which extend through a tie bar 10 that is fastened to said sidewalls; this construction being fully disclosed in said co-pending application. The bearing sleeve 8 contains identical diametrically opposed transverse openings 11 11 in the wall thereof that are located centrally with respect to the side Walls of the housing, and from the opposite side edges of said transverse openings there extend diametrically opposed locking notches 12-12 and 13 13. A supporting plate 14 is secured to the side walls 7 7 intermediate the ends of the housing and extends transversely thereacross.
The latch bolt 15 of the lock is pivotally mounted to said housing and extends through an opening in the front wall thereof. Said latch bolt is actuated by a conventional retractor 16 including a yoke portion 16-a, which straddles the bearing sleeve 8 and has laterally extending arms 16-b16b providing rollback platforms and a bar 16-c which extends forwardly from said yoke portion through an opening in the supporting plate 14 and is pinned to the latch bolt 15 in the conventional manner. The retractor and the latch bolt are biased into normal projected position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4, by a compression spring 17 which surrounds said bar and is disposed between said supporting plate 14 and the latch bolt 15.
The knob shank bearing sleeve 8 rotatably supports oppositely disposed, coaxial, tubular knob shanks 18 and 19. The knob shank 18 carries a knob 20 and the knob shank 19 carries a similar knob 21; said knobs being secured to said shanks in the manner fully disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,675,692 of Nicholas A. Welch et al., issued April 20, 1954. The knob shanks said shanks have portions thereof cut away providing l notches 27 and 28,-respectively, therein. It will be noted, particularly in Fig. 2, that each of said knob shanks 18 and 19 is identical in form, but that they are disposed in reverse relationship in the bearing sleeve 8.
The knob shanks 18 and 19 carry identical rollbacks 29-29 which are, in most respects, of the conventional unit lock type and, with particular reference to Fig. 8, each of which includes a circular hub portion 30 having opposed radial arms 30-a 30a extending therefrom.

A spring 39 'is disposed between the cam plug 31 and the rollback 2,9 in each of the knob Shanks, and it will be understood thatsaid springs urge the cam plugs into the notches in the ends of the turnpieces and also urge their respective rollbacks against the Vfree end of the pushrod 34 extending from the opposite shank. It will be noted that the cam plugs and lturnpieces are also identically formed, and that they are adapted to be contained within their respective knob Shanks in* reverse relationship.
The construction ofthe clogging mechanism above described reduces the cost of manufacture of the lock since thedogging mechanism in each ofthe knob Shanks utilizes the same parts, but carries them in opposed relation, thereby rendering it unneeessaryto producediierent parts for each of the mechanisms.
The door lock is retained in a slot 40 in the edge of a door 41 by escutcheon plates 42 and 43 which are constructed in the manner fully described in my above mentioned co-pending application.
When the rollbacks 2'9-29 are in normal unlocked position, as illustrated in Figs. l through 4, rotation of the knobs or 21 in either direction will rotate its respective rollback to cause retraction of thev'retractor and withdrawal orr the latch bolt. It will be understood that the turnpiece, cam plug,'pus hrod and rollback in each Shank all turn together and that the end of the pushrod merely slides over the surfacepof the hub portion of the opposite rollback and revolves around the opposite pushrod.
When it is desired to dog either knob against operation,
the turnpiece in the opposite knob is rotated for 90 degrecs in a counter-clockwise direction with respect to its knob. Since the turnpiece is retained against outward axial movement by the spring 37 which is stronger than the spring 39, rotation thereof will cam its respective cam plug and pushrod inwardly in the knob shank to Slide the opposite rollback relatively to its'knob shank into dog- .ging position wherein the radial arms thereon are disposed within the locking notches in j the bearing sleeve. Rotation of the opposite-knob shank is then prevented, but the knob whose turnpiece was rotated is still ,free to retract the latch bolt until dogged in the same manner from the opposite side of'the door. ln Figs. 5, 6 and 7, I have illustrated the position assumed by the parts of the dogging mechanism when both of said knobs are dogged against operation, but it will be readily understood that either knob may be dogged independently as above described.
The turnpieces may be replaced by suitable key operated cylinder locks and cams of the type disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,694,916 of Frank J. McConnell, issued November 23, 1954, so that either of the knobs may be locked in dogged or undogged condition as desired.

VIn a door lock, the combination of a housing having rollback dogging abutments, a retractor movable in said housing, a latch bolt connected to said retractor, a pair of opposed tubular knob Shanks mounted to rotate in said housing about a common axis and each having a knob se cured toits outer end, a rollback for actuating said'retractor non-rotatably 'connected to the inner end portion of each of saidkno-b Shanks andeach having a circular hub that is axially slidable in its respective shank, each of said hubs having an opening extending therethrough in an axial direction and Said openings being disposed on opposite sides of said Common axis, an axially slidable supporting member containedl in each of said knob Shanks outwardly of and spaced from the rollback therein, a pushrod secured to and extending inwardly from each of said Supporting members, said pushrodsL lying on opposite sides of said common axis and eachrextending slidably through the opening in the hub of its respective rollback and terminating inwardly of the inner end of its respective knob shank, the free end of each pushrod defining an abutment lsurface engageable by the hub of the opposite rollback and normally locating saidopposite rollback in retractor operating position, a spring'contained within each of said knob Shanks between the supporting member and the rollback carried thereby for urging the rollback against the free end of the opposite pushrod, each pushrod, upon rotation ofpits respective knob shank, being carried in a circular path with the free end thereof sliding over the surface of the hub of the opposite rollback while still maintaining said opposite rollback in retractor operating position, and actuating means contained in each knob shank outwardly of the supporting member therein and accessible for manual operation at the outer face of its respective knob, said actuating means being adapted to move its supporting member and pushrod inwardly to thereby shift .the rollback in the opposite knob shank axially outwardly and into locking engagement with said abutments onV the housing to thereby dog the opposite knob shank against operation.

In a door lock, the combination of a housing having rollback dogging abutments, a retractor movable in said housing, a latch bolt connected to said retractor, a pair of opposed tubular knob Shanks mounted to rotate in said housing about a common axis and each having a knob secured to its outer end, a rollback for actuating said retractor non-rotatably lconnected to the inner end portion of each of said knob Shanks and each having a circular hub that is axially slidable in its respective shank, each of said hubs having an opening extending therethrough in an'axial direction and said openings being disposed on opposite sides of said common axis, an axially slidable cam plug contained within eachof said knob Shanks outwardly of and spaced from the rollback therein, each of said cam plugs having a cam surface on its outer end, means preventing rotationof Said cam plugs relatively to their respective knob Shanks, a pushrod secured to and extending inwardly from eachwofsaid cam plugs, said pushrods lying on opposite sides of said common axis land each extending slidably through the opening in the hub of its respective rollback and terminating inwardly of the inner end of its respective knob shank, the free end of .cach pushrod delining an abutment surface engageable by the hub of the opposite rollback and normally locating said opposite rollback in retractor operating position, a spring `contained Within each of said knob shanks between the cam plug and the rollback carried thereby for urging the rollback against the free end of the opposite pushrod, each pushrod, upon rotation of its respective knob shank, being carried in a circular path with the free end thereof sliding over the surface of the hub of the opposite rollback while still maintaining said opposite rollback in retractor operating position, and a turnpiece rotatably mounted in each of said knob Shanks outwardly of the cam plug therein and accessible for manual operation at the outer face of its respective knob, each turnpiece having a cam surface on its inner end cooperating with the cam surface on its respective cam plug whereby, when either of said turnpieces is rotated, it will move its cam plug and pushrod axially inwardly and thereby shift the rollback in the opposite knob shank axially outwardly and into locking engagement with said abutments on the housing to there- )by dog the opposite knob shank against operation.

In a door lock, the combination of a housing having rollback clogging abutments, a retractor movable in said housing, a latch bolt connected to said retractor, a pair of opposed tubular knob shanks mounted to rotate in said housing about a common axis and each having a knob secured to its outer end, a rollback for actuating said retractor non-rotatably connected to the inner end portion of each of said knob Shanks and each having a circular hub that is axially slidable in its respective knob shank, each of said hubs having an opening extending therethrough in an axial direction and said openings |being disposed on opposite sides of said ycommon axis,
a longitudinally movable pushrod contained within each of said knob shanks, said pushrods lying on opposite sides of said common axis and each extending slidably through the opening in the hub of its respective rollback and terminating inwardly of the inner end of its respective knob shank, the free end of each pushrod defining an abutment surface engageable by the hub of the op posite rollback and normally locating said opposite rollback in retractor operating position, spring means contained in each of said knob shanks and urging the rollback therein against the free end of the opposite pushrod, each pushrod, upon rotation of its respective knob shank, being carried in a circular path with the free end thereof sliding over the surface of the hub of the opposite rollback while still maintaining said opposite rollback in retractor operating position, and means contained in each knob shank and accessible for manual operation at the outer face of its knob for moving the pushrod carried thereby axially inwardly to thereby shift the rollback in the opposite knob shank axially outwardly and into engagement with said abutments on the housing to thereby dog the opposite knob shank against operation.
4. The subject matter set forth in claim 3 wherein the openings in the hubs of said rollbacks are equidistant from said common axis whereby said rollbacks may be inserted into either of said knob Shanks in reverse relation.
