This invention relates to a device for'contouring. grind-` ing, wheels and more particularly to a device for-shaping the. contour of a grindingvr wheel in a grinding machine to con-form with a template for', the shape of workpieces that are ground in said machine.
An object of myinvention is to provide such a device which may be readily attachedto agrinding machine for contouring the grinding wheel thereof.
A further object is the-'provisionof a; novel construction'- for suchv a device whichV will render it easy toi use andY highly efficient in its operation. L
A- still furtherV object is topro'vide such a device which is completely self-contained anddriven. independently of the machine in which it is used.
Further ob'ect's 'and advantages ofv this invention'will be clearly understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device embodying the present invention; parts thereof being omitted to show its construction.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional front view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side view of said device; parts thereof being shown in section. Y
In the embodiment of my invention which is shown in the drawings, the device includes a pair of side members 5 5 which are connected by a tie bar 6 and a slide bar 7 having binding nuts 8 8 and 9 9, respectively, threaded thereto.
A carrier member 10 is slidably mounted upon the slide bar 7 and is moved along the same by means of a feed screw 11 that is rotatably mounted in bearings 12 and 13 in the side members. The said feed screw has mounted thereon a worm gear 14 which is rotated by a worm pinion 15 that is driven by speed reducing means such as a worm gear 16 that is rotated by a worm pinion 17 which is driven by a suitable electric motor 18 that is mounted upon a support 19 and is preferably reversible so as to drive the feed screw in opposite directions.
The said carrier member 10 has a body portion with a transverse boss 20 which is slidable upon the slide bar 7, another transverse boss 21 that is threaded to the feed screw 11 and a longitudinal boss 22 in which there is slidably mounted a plunger 23 that extends through the boss 22 and has, at its inner end, a suitable dressing tool 24 that is adapted to control and dress the grinding surface of a grinding wheel 25 which is associated with said grinding machine.
At the front end of the plunger 23 there is provided a tracer, preferably in the form of a roller 26, which is rotatable on a vertical shaft 27 and engages a template 28 that is detachably mounted upon a supporting bar 29 which is secured to and extends between the side members 5 5. The tracer roller 26 is urged in the direction of the template 28 and retained in engagement therewith by means of a suitable spring 30 which preferably surrounds the plunger 23 and is disposed between the boss 22 and an anchoring bar 31 that is secured to the 2,862,493- Y lamented` im. 2,-.1195'8 LCC p 2 said plunger and retains it against rotation by means of guide screws 32 32.which extend vertically through the opposite. sides ofsaid anchoringfbar and slidably engage the under surface of a horizontally disposed` extension 33 on the carrier member.k I -1 My, improved dviceismounted4 in a c onyentional grindingmachineby means ofkaxial mounting studs 2M- -l 34 which project fromthe outer sides-ofi the sidemembers 5 5 and are countersunkf to receivethe centers 35 35 that extend axiallyfrom the spindle and; tail stock of the grinding machine.`
In order to prevent rotation of. said, device about Vthe axis of the centers,35 35', it isanchored to the grinding machine by means of suitable clamping washersr 36 36 that surround posts'31'-7 37 which extend upwardly from l an anchoring plate 3 8l that is secured, to a suitable part of the grindingy machine, lsuch as the way- 39, byA means ofthescrews 40 40 Each of the said washers 36 restv upon. anl abutment 41 adjacent to the respective post37 and clamping-,nuts

The motor 18 may be reversed so that it will rotate the screw shaft 11 in opposite directions and thereby cause the dressing tool to be moved back and forth across the grinding wheel as many times as may be necessary in order to complete a dressing operation. I-f desired, suitable reversing means may be used for automatically reversing the said motor at the end of each pass of the carrier across the device in either direction.
