CORPSE LIFTER. No. 286,202. Patented Oct. 9, 1883.

PATENT JAMES M. JAOOBSEN, OF PRESTON, IOWA.
CORPSE-LIFTER.
SPEGIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 286,202, dated October 9, 1883,
- Application filed March 3,1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it 12241 1 concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES M. J ACOBSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Preston, in the county of Jackson and- State of Iowa, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Patent No. 245,502) Corpse-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in my corpse-lifting devices patented August 9, 1881, No. 245,502; and these improvements consist of elbow-joints in the carrying-rod, adapting it to be folded up, of devices to prevent the tongs from slipping on the carryingrod when inclined, as, for example, in carrying bodies up and down stairs, in providing the yokewith an anti-noise lining, and of straps attached to the lifting-pads to draw them properly under the body, all as hereinafter fully described.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the carrying-pole inserted in the tongs in position for lifting and carryinga corpse. Fig. 2 is a side view of a portion of one end of pole, with handle released from the holding button. Fig. 3 is a top View of a portion of one end of the pole, with the handle attached and in position for use. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of pole inserted in the tongs in position on a body. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the yoke and lining. Fig. 6 is a plan of a portion of the leather strap. Fig. 7 shows the carrying-pole folded up.
A represents the tongs, constructed similar to the tongs set forth in the former patent.
B is the lifting and carrying pole, provided with the handles a a, having the single straight parts a a, and bifurcations a a pivoted to the pole at a a for the purpose of folding up the pole in compact convenient form for trans portation. The pole is provided near its ends with bolts or clips I), to the lower end of which is pivoted a. button or bar, I), long enough to extend across the bifurcations a a, for holding the handles in line with the pole in shown in Fig. 1.
The upper ends of the bolts or clips are prouse, as
lines in Fig. 4, by the straps or vided with links or rings 0, to receive and hold the strap 0, which is provided with an adjusting-buckle, c, and with elongated holes 0 to receive the buttons d on the yoke of the tongs.
Straps or cords d are extended through rings (1 on the sectors (2" of the tongs, and are attached to the pads (1*, for the purpose of drawing up the pads tothe body when the tongs are placed in position for lifting the body, as shown in Fig. 4. Y Y
The yoke D is provided with a lining, f, of rubber, leather, or other suitable substance, to prevent noise by contact of the yoke with the carrying-pole.
The strap 0, being fastened to the links or rings 0, extends through the upper part of the tongs, and the button d on the yoke D is in serted in a hole in the strap, by which arrangement the tongs are held from slipping on the pole B in carrying the corpse up or down stairs, or in other places requiring the pole to be carried in inclined positions.
When the pole isnot in use, the button I) is turned around lengthwise with the pole, releasing the handles, as shown in Fig. 2, and the handles are folded upon the pole, as shown in Fig. 7. When the tongs are placed on the body, the pads d are drawn up under the body and held in that position, as shown in dotted cords d.
Having described my invention,i[ claim- 1. In a corpse-lifter, the carrying-pole B, having jointed handles, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the ing the button cl, of the strap 0, having the holes 0 attached to the pole B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The strap or cord d, in combination with the lifting-pads d substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 7
JAMES MONDY JAOOBSEN.
