Application May 16, 1955, Serial No. 508,416 1 Claim. ((124-1005) This invention relates generally to fastening devices and, more particularly, to new and useful improvements in a button type fastening device for use on garments.

Broadly the invention comprises a button-shaped body having a flat base portion and a crowned front portion, with a recess formed in the-body opening outwardly of the base portion. A segment of the crowned front portion of the body is slidably mounted on the base portion and carries a pin fastening element adapted to extend into the recess. A disc-shaped latching or clamping member including a projecting perforated lug is adapted to form a fold in the fabric of the garment and to be inserted with the folded fabric into the recess where the pin penetrates the folded fabric and lug for securing the fastening device on the garment.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a fastening device of the button type which may be readily and securely attached to a garment without sewing and which may be readily detached therefrom, without injury to the fabric of the garment.

Another object of the invention is to provide a fastening device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, neat in appearance, economical to manufacture and highly efficient for the intended purpose.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the fastening device is formed of a body 10 which may be made of any suitable material such as plastic, wood or the like and which is preferably circular in shape with a fiat base portion 11 and a crowned front portion 12 to give the body suificient thickness. In accordance with the invention, a segment 13 of the crowned front portion 12 is cut from the body and is slidable on the base portion 11. The segment is formed with a fiat bottom 14 and a flat side 15.

The body is formed with an elongated deep recess 16 extending substantially from side to side thereof and inwardly from the outer surface of the base portion 11 and to one side of the line of separation between the main 2 portion of the crowned front portion and the segment 13 thereby providing a wall 17 on the main portion.

The slidable segment 13 is held against separation from the body by a screw 18 extendingthrough an elongated .slot 19' in the base portion 11 and threaded into 'the segment. The head of the screw is larger in diameter than the width of the slot and is adapted to ride in a countersunk recess 20 formed around the slot. A pin 21 is carried by the slidable segment 13 and projects from the flat bottom 14 thereof and may be fastened to the segment by the screw 18 or in any other suitable manner. The pin is aligned with and is adapted to extend through a passage 22 formed in the Wall 17 of the main portion of the crowned front portion 12 and projects into the recess 16.

Associated with the body 10, there is a latching or clamping member in the form of a fiat disc 23 preferably formed of material similar to the material of the body 10 and formed with a central projecting flat lug 24 having an opening 25 therethrough.

In use, the flat base portion 11 of the body 10 of the fastening device is disposed against one face of a strip of fabric 26 at the point desired, with the segment 13 separated from the main portion of the crowned front portion 12 sufliciently to withdraw the point of the pin 21 from the recess 16. The clamping or latching member 23 is then disposed against the opposite face of the strip directly behind the body 10 with its projecting lug 24 aligned with the recess 16 in the body 10. Inward pressure against the clamping member will force the lug 24 to form a fold in the strip of fabric and carry said fold into the recess 16, the recess being sufiiciently large to receive both the lug and the fold. The segment 13, is then slid against the main portion of the crowned front portion 12 forcing the pin 21 through the passage 22, the fold of the strip of fabric and the opening 25 in the lug thereby securing the fastening device on the strip of fabric as shown in Fig. 2. The lug 24 serves to take part of the supporting strain from the fold of fabric.

The fastening device is readily removed by merely sliding the segment 13 upwardly away from the main portion of the crowned front portion 12 so as to withdraw the pin 21 from the fabric and lug 24 when the clamping disc 23 may be withdrawn.

With a fastening device or button constructed in this manner, it is evident that a secure fastening of the fastening device in position on the garment may be effected without requiring any stitching or sewing.

While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
