@2 4 A RNLYS UNITED STATES CHARLES MILLER, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
DUMPING -WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,052, dated October 2,1883.
Ayplicalion filedJuly 23, 1683. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: I Be it known that I, CHARLES MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Au- 1 burn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumpingagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved dumping-wagon. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssection. Fig. 4 is a top view, and Fig. 5 is an end view. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to dumping-wagons, and it contemplates certain improvements upon the wagon for which Letters Patent No. 27 8,253 were granted to me on the 22d day of May, 1883; and it consists, to that end, in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the side pieces of the wagon, which may be mounted upon the running-gear in any suitable manner, and B a number of cross-bars passing transversely from the lower portions of the side pieces, and passing through two pairs of longitudinal bars, 0, between which a number of rollers, D, are journaled, upon which the flexible-slat bottom rests and rolls. This bot tom consists of a number of transverse slats, E, fastened near their ends upon two endless belts, F, which pass over two pairs of grooved wheels, G, secured upon two shafts, H, journaled in bearings at both ends of the wagon, in the lower portions of the side pieces, the said slat bottom extending the length of the side pieces. Flat strips of sheet metal I are fastened upon the upper surfaces of the slats, overlapping the rear edges of the same, so as to prevent any small contents of the wagon from dropping through between the slats.
The'upper edges of the side pieces are provided with laterally-extending flanges J, the edges of which are provided with downwardlyprojecting flanges K, forming ways upon both sides of the upper edges, in which ways the upper ends of two sliding side pieces, formed of slats L, fastened transversely upon two endless belts, M, slide, their lower ends bearing against the upper sides of the ends of the bot tom slats when sliding inside the side pieces while the lower ends of the sliding slats slide in ways N upon the outside of the side pieces when the sliding slats are drawn around the rear ends of the side pieces to slide upon the outside of the same, their upper ends sliding in the outer portion of the ways J K. The endless belts pass over two rollers, O, pivoted vertically upon the rear ends of the side pieces, over which rollers the slats pass, and over two pairs of pulleys, P, journaled in the front ends of the side pieces.
The forward side slats are provided upon their insides with a pair of vertical cleats, Q, each, between which cleats the ends of the front end-gate, R, fit, the lower end of which is fastened to the foremost bottom slat, so that when the bottom is drawn rearward the sliding side slats will also be drawn out, and to decrease the friction against the side pieces of the wagon-body a number of anti-friction rollers,'S, are journaled in the said side pieces, projecting with their rims outside the surfaces of the side pieces, so that the slats will roll upon them. To draw the sliding side slats forward after they have been drawn rearwai d, two belts, T, are fastened to the rearmost bottom slat at one end and to the foremost side slats at the other end, passing over the forward shaft, H, and over a number of rollers, U, journaled upon the inner side of the lower ends of the side pieces. I
The tail-gate V is suspended swinging from a transverse rod, WV, fastened upon the upper edges of the side pieces, and the lower end of the same is held in place, prevented from swinging out by means of a lug or bolt, X, projecting upward from the upper surface of one of the rearinost bottom slats, so that when the bottom is drawn out the gate will be allowed to swing out freely, allowing the load to be dumped.
A shaft,- Y, havinga crank, Z, upon its in ner end, is journaled in bearings'a upon the upper edge of one of the side pieces, within easy reach of the driver, and is provided upon its outer end with a sprocket-wheel, I), over which a sprocket-chain, 0, passes, which chain passes over alarger sprocket-wheel, d, journaled .upon a shaft, 0, projecting laterally upon the lower portion of the outside of the thus rendering the dumping of the load easier, than where the load is simply discharged by a traveling slat bottom.
' Having thus described myinvention, I "claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. I11 a dumping-wagon, traveling side pieces composed of vertical slats traveling rearward, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a dumping-wagon, traveling side pieces traveling rearward upon the inside of the stationary side pieces, passing around the rear ends of the same, and traveling forward upon the outside of the same, as and for the.
the pinion and sprocket-wheel journalednear purpose shown and set forth.
3. In a dumping-wagon, the traveling slat side pieces passing over rollers at the rear ends of the stationary side pieces, and fastened upon endless belts passing over the rollers at the rear ends and over rollers at the front ends of the side pieces, as and for the purpose sh own and set forth.
