Application August 14, 1956, Serial No. 603,911
4 Claims. (Cl. 128-283) This invention relates to supports for parts of the human body, and in particular a sanitary belt for retaining a pad in position over the incision of a colostomy to facilitate retaining the parts in position for healing.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for supporting a pad over a portion of the human body in which the device is readily applied and is adapted to be used with comfort.
Various types of belts and supports have been provided for retaining parts of the human body in position and although devices of this type are used universally it has been found diflicult to design a device that is particularly adapted for retaining a pad or supporting element over a portion of the abdomen. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a pair of straps adapted to be extended around the waist of a patient with the straps retained in spaced relation by spaced vertically disposed strips at the front and with single strips at the back and sides, with buckles for adjusting the length of the straps mounted therein and adapted to be positioned on the right hand side of a patient and with fasteners, such as snap fasteners for retaining the pad in position at one side of the abdomen of the patient, at the front.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a combination of straps adapted to be positioned around the waist of a patient for retaining a pad over an incision particularly such as that used in a colostomy.
Another object of the invention is to provide a support for retaining a pad over an incision in a portion of the human body in which the device is adapted to be adjusted to patients of different sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a support for retaining a pad over a portion of the human body in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an upper strap adapted to be extended around the waist of a patient, a lower strap sub stantially parallel to the upper strap, spaced vertically disposed strips of material connecting the straps at the front, individual strips of material connecting the straps at the sides and back and fastening elements, such as snap fasteners for retaining a pad in position upon the straps.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure l is an elevational view illustrating the improved abdominal sanitary belt showing the device in the position of retaining a pad over an incision in the left hand side of the abdomen, parts of the body upon which the device is positioned being broken away.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the sanitary belt shown in Fig. 1, also with parts of the body upon which the device is positioned broken away.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the belt with the parts in extended positions.
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of the supporting straps at the front of the belt with the parts shown on an enlarged scale and showing fastening elements for attaching the pad to the belt.
Figure 5 is a cross section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4 with the parts shown on a still further enlarged. scale illustrating one of the fastening elements for securing the spaced vertically disposed strips of material to the straps or belts. v
Figure 6 is a sectional plan taken on line 66 of Fig.
0 3 illustrating one of the buckles of the straps.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference character denote corresponding parts the improved sanitary belt or support of this invention includes an upper strap 10 having a buckle 11 on one end, a lower strap 12 also having a buckle, as indicated by the numeral 13 on one end, spaced connecting straps 14 and 15 connected to the straps 10 and 12 with fasteners 16, as shown in Fig. 5, connecting straps 17 and 18 mounted to be positioned at the sides of a patient and a short connecting strap 19 mounted to be positioned in the center of the back of a patient with the straps extended around the waist and with the straps 14 and 15 positioned to support a pad 20 on the left hand side of the abdomen of the patient.
The ends of the straps 17, 18 and 19 are secured to the straps 10 and 12 by suitable fastening means such as the stitches 21 and the length of these straps is such that the lower strap 12 is inclined from the center of the back to the straps 14 and 15 at the front with the belt positioned around the abdomen of a patient.
The straps at the front are provided with suitable fasteners, such as snap fasteners of the conventional type, as indicated by the numeral 22, or by the fastener 16, as shown in Fig. 5.
With the support provided as illustrated and described the pad, such as a sheet of gauze or soft paper is attached by suitable fasteners to the straps 10, 12, 14 and 15 and with the belt extended around the waist the pad is readily adjusted to a suitable position, such as to cover an incision of a colostomy and with the device in position a comfortable support is provided.
It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A sanitary belt including an upper strap having a buckle on one end and designed to extend around the waist of a patient, a lower strap also having a buckle on one end and also designed to extend around the waist of a patient, the lower strap being spaced downwardly from the upper strap particularly at the front of the patient, connecting strips extended across the upper and lower straps and positioned at the front, sides, and rear of the belt, snap fasteners on the straps and strips located, particularly, at the front of the belt, and a pad having snap fastener elements thereon designed to coact with the snap fasteners of the straps and strips for retaining the pad in position at the front of the belt.
2. A sanitary belt comprising a pair of straps having buckles on one of the ends thereof and connecting straps extended across the straps of the pair, said connecting straps being positioned at the front, sides, and back of a patient upon which the belt'is positioned, the connect ing straps at the front being provided with snap fasteners.
3. A sanitary belt comprising a pair of straps having buckles on one of the ends thereof and connecting straps. extended across the straps of the pair, said connecting straps being positioned at the front, sides, and back of a patient upon which the belt is positioned, the straps of the belt having snap fasteners thereon positioned adjacent the connecting straps at the front.
4. A sanitary belt comprising a pair of straps having Patented Oct. 21, 1958 of a patient upon which thebelt isipositioned, thestraps of the belt having snap fasteners thereon positionedad- 5 jacent the connecting straps atthe front, ancLtheends of, the, straps atthe back and'sides beingv connected tothe.'st 'raps...of.the belt with stitches.
