EASTON 2,856,658 METHOD OF CONTINUOUS CASTING Filed Aug. 13, 1956 zurus g m arr-02%)- United States Patent Ofiice Patented Oct. 21, 1958 2,856,658 METHOD OF CONTINUOUS CASTING Rufus Easton, Pittsburgh, Pa., assignor to Koppers Company, Inc., a corporation of Delaware Application August 13, 1956, Serial No. 603,613 2 Claims. (Cl. 22 200.1)
This invention relates to molten metals and more particularly to a method of outer portion of the shell, which had been cooled down, reheats, expanding as it does so. Since there is no appreciable change in temperature in the inner portion of the shell and therefore no appreciable change in length, the expansion of the outer portion of the shell results in an inward bowing or bending of the shell away from the mold wall. When this occurs, the abovementioned undesirable spill-over of the molten metal core surrounded by the solidifying shell results at the end of the run. It then is necessary to repair the resulting damage caused by the spill-over before casting operations can commence again.
shell about Referring to the drawing, a schematic view is disclosed of a mold at the end of a casting run, which run included the practice of the method of the present invention.
More particularly, an open-ended mold 2 is disclosed, the mold having an inner Wall 3. A plurality of spaced support and guide rollers 4 are positioned below the mold. It is to be understood that the practice of the out the several steps of the invention.
A supply of molten metal has been furnished to mold 2 from a tundish nozzle (not shown) in a typical casting run and, as can be seen in the drawing, the casting 1n the mold, broadly deslgnated by reference numeral 6 a tendency for the solidifying shell in the mold 2 to bend to bring about undesirable molten metal spill-over, a supporting unit 9 has been inserted core at the end of the run.
In the advantageous embodiment of the invention disclosed, the supporting unit 9 is in the form of a G-shaped the bar being is possible to use effectively refractory materials of various shapes to accomplish the support.
It is to be noted that the supporting unit can be inserted into the mold manually by means of a pair of gripping tongs. Further, it is to be noted that the unit should be inserted promptly at the end of the run, advantageously within 20-30 seconds after the molten metal has ceased to flow from the tundish. With the supporting unit properly inserted, the metal continues to solidify,
of the solidifying shell 7, thus avoiding any spill-over core 8 surrounded by the shell. The invention claimed is:
1. A method of continuously casting molten steel comprising passing a supply of molten steel through an open-.
ended mold 111 a casting run, cooling said steel as it member into said gradually solidifying molten metal core to maintain the solidifying shell of the casting spread outwardly against said
Claims (1)
1. A METHOD CONTINUOUSLY CASTING MOLTEN STEEL COMPRISING PASSING A SUPPLY OF MLTEN STEEL THROUGH AN OPENENDED MOLD IN A CASTING RUN, COOLING SAID STEEL AS IT PASSES THROUGH THE MOLD DURING THE RUN TO FORM A SOLIIDIFYING SHELL ABOUT A MOLTEN METAL CORE, AND PROMPTLY INSERTING INTO THE MOLTEN METAL CORE AT THE END OF THE RUN A C-SHAPED SUPPORT BAR TO MAINTAIN THE SOLIDIFYING SHELL OF THE CASTING AGAINST SAID MOLD TO PREVENT SPILL-OVER.
