Claims. (Cl. 210-409) This invention relates to lters and more particularly to filters for use with, but not restricted to, swimming pools.
It is the principal object of the .present invention to provide a filter for liquids which is simple in construction, free from operating difficulties, and with which access can readily be had to the interior if desired or required.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a filter for liquids having provisions for flushing the interior or filtering-elements thereof in a simple but effective manner.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a filter having provisions for flushing which depart from the backilush or reverse iiow heretofore employed on many filters and in place thereof uses a forward fiushing action so that less unnecessary strain is imparted to the filtering elements.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a system which includes a filter in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the system shown in Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a View in elevation of a filter housing and components, parts being broken away to show the details of construction.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes can be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, a filter housing is shown, having a base plate 11 which may be extended to serve 'for the support of auxiliaries employed with the filter, and a hollow circular cylindrical side wall 12. At the upper margin of the side Wall 12 a rim 13 is secured in any desired manner, such as by welding, to provide a fluid tight construction. The rim 13 has a groove 14 on its upper surface for the reception of a ring gasket 15. The rim 13 has secured to the outer edge thereof and extending upwardly therefrom a plurality of threaded studs 16.
A top cover 17, closing the upper end of the wall 12, is provided, through which the studs 16 extend, nuts 18 on washers 19 removably holding the cover 17 in position.
The side wall 12 near the top thereof is provided with a connecting ange 2t), and near the bottom thereof with a fitting 21, controlled by a valve 22.

Patented Sept. 23, 1958 connected. The pipe 24 can have a detachable coupling 24a therein and has a control Valve 25 therein. The pipe 24 is connected to the delivery side of a motor driven pump 27 which has an inlet pipe 28 connected thereto for the delivery of the water to be filtered.
The boss 23 has interiorly connected thereto a vertical pipe 29, the discharge end of whichis relatively close to the base plate 11.
The top cover 21 also has thereon, in offset relation to the boss 23, a boss 30-to which a discharge pipe 31 is exteriorly connected. The pipe 31 can have a detachable coupling 31a therein and has a control valve 32 therein. The boss 30 has interiorly connected thereto a vertical pipe 33 having a plurality of openings 34 therethrough. The pipes 31 and 33 are preferably larger in internal cross sectional area than the pipes 24 and 29, and as shown the internal diameter of the pipe 31 is of the order of twice that of the pipe 29.
Within the interior of the housing 10 a cylindrical metallic screen drum of sheet material is provided, having perforations 41 and peripheral bracing and holding rings 42 at the top, center, and bottom thereof.
Within the drum 40 a filter bag 43 is provided, preferably of suitable synthetic plastic material in woven form, to serve as a screen, and of suitable weave and mesh so that when coated, as hereinafter pointed out, it will not pass material larger than about one micron. The bag 43 has a rim portion 44 which extends over the top ring 42, outwardly over the rim 13 and beyond the edge of the top cover 17 with suitable grommets 44a so that the rim portion 44 can be placed on the studs 16 and held thereby.
At the bottom of the bag 43, a sheet metal plate 45 rests to hold down the bottom of the bag 43 with the side portions of the bag held against undue displacement and to reduce erosive eifects.
The inlet pipe 28 has a funnel 50 for the reception of filter powder of any preferred type, such as diatomaceous earth, to which liquid can be supplied, for admixture with the powder to provide a slurry, by a fluid connection 51 connected to the pipe 24 and controlled by a valve 52. The slurry delivery side of the funnel 50 is connected by a pipe 53 having a precoat mixing Valve 54 therein for controlling the quantity of slurry admitted to the inlet pipe 28. A pressure gage 55 can be connected in the pipe 51.
The flange 20 has carried thereby a filtered liquid return pipe 56 with a control valve 57 therein.
The mode of operation will now be pointed out.
With the valve 32 closed, the liquid to be filtered, supplied through the pipe 28 with filter powder from the funnel 50, as determined by the setting of the valve 54, is delivered by the pump 27 through the pipe 24, the valve 25 and the pipe 29 to the interior of the bag 43. As the liquid is introduced through the pipe 29 the bottom plate 45 protects the bottom of the bag 43 and aids in effecting the desired turbulent action for flushing. At the same time, any previously introduced filter powder and dirt.
that may have settled are stirred up so as to coat the interior of the bag 43 as the liquid passes therethrough and through the perforations 41 in the drum 40 for discharge through the pipe 56 and valve 57 and return. As the clear ltered liquid passes through the coating or cake on the inner face of the bag 43, any suspended material in the liquid in size down to about one micron will be retained.
As material is filtered and removed from the liquid by the coating in the bag 43, the pressure will tend to build up, this being indicated on the pressure gage 55. When this reaches a predetermined value, flushing of the interior of the bag 43 is desirable. For this purpose the return valve S7 is closed and the valve 32 is opened. I claim:
1. A flushing system for filters comprising a closed vertical filter housing having an exterior littered fluid delivery connection, a valve for controlling the flow through said connection, a filter bag extending downwardly within said housing and closed at the bottom thereof, a downwardly extending fluid inlet connection in communication with the interior of said bag for creating turbulence therein, a valve for controlling said connection, a plate in the interior of said bag and extending across the bottom thereof towards which said fiuid inlet connection is directed, a downwardly extending fluid discharge connection in communication with the interior of said bag for fluent removal of material loosened by the turbulence, and a valve for controlling said flushing fluid connection.
2. A filter for liquids comprising a hollow vertical cylindrical housing having an upper terminal rim, a lower closure wall for said housing, a perforated drum member within said housing and extending from said lower wall to said rim in spaced relation to the interior of said housing, a downwardly extending filter bag interiorly disposed within said drum member, a horizontal cover plate for closing the upper end of said housing and supported by said rirn, said housing having a controlled liquid discharge outlet at the upper part thereof for the discharge of filtered liquid, said cover plate having a fiuid inlet pipe for liquid to be filtered, Said inlet pipe having its lower terminus extending towards and inspaced relation to said lower closure wall, and a vertical flushing pipe carried by said cover plate and extending interiorly within said filter bag.

4. A filter for liquids comprising a hollow vertical cylindrical housing having an upper terminal rim, a lower closure wall for said housing, a cylindrical perforated drum member concentrically interiorly disposed in said housing in spaced relation thereto and extending from said lowerwall to said rim, a downwardly extending filter bag interiorly disposed within said drum member in engagement therewith and having its bottom disposed on said lower closure wall, a horizontal bottom plate within said bag and covering the bottom thereof, a horizontal cover plate for closing the upper end of said housing and supported by said rim, said housing having a controlled liquid discharge outlet at the upper part thereof for the discharge of filtered liquid, said cover plate having a vertical central fluid inlet pipe for liquid to be filtered, said inlet pipe having its lower terminus extending towards,y and Vin spaced relation toA said bottom plate for creating turbulence within said bag, and a vertical flushing pipe carried by said plate and extending interiorly downwardly within said filter bag, said flushing pipe having a plurality of perforations.
5.. A filter for liquids comprising a hollow vertical cylindrical housing having an upper terminal rim, la lower closure wall for said housing,Y a cylindrical perforated drum 'member concentrically interiorly disposed in said housing in spaced relation thereto and extending from said lower wall to said rim, a filter bag interiorly disposed within said drum member with its side portions in engagement with said drum member and having'itsbottom disposed on said lower closure wall, said filter bag having its upper margin extending outwardly over said rim, a horizontal bottom plate within said bag and covering the bottom thereof, a horizontal cover plate for closing the upper en d of said housing and supported by said rim, a sealing member for said rim and cover plate, said housing having a controlled liquid discharge outlet at the upper part thereof below said rim for the discharge of filtered liquid from the space between said housing and said drnrn, said cover plate lhaving a vertical central fluid inlet pipe for liquid to be filtered, said inlet pipe having its lower terminus extending towards and in spaced relation to said bot-torn plate for creating turbulence within said bag, and a vertical flushing pipe carried by said plate and extending interiorly downwardly within said filter bag, said flnshing pipe having a pluralityy of perforations and having a largercross sectional area than said inlet pipe.
