This.inve..ntion relates genera y o s rfac Idrainsand mo e particular y t dra w h P entjsedimenteiI, asol ne and the k f passing to. the main, drain line to wh'ich the drain .is connected. v v 1 ll drains of this, characterniade according to th teachin s ft e prioral t and wi hiS I- am familiar have 11241110. adequate means for infdioating the filling of the straining member in the drain structure especially in large sized drains. The only way the fining of the strain-' ing member. was" indicated was by the flooding of the area surrounding the SlllfffdCfiLQf the drain.
.Furthermore, no meanshfave been provided to indicate the presence in the drain of a predetermined headorintercepteri oil, ga'soiine or the like. r 7
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to .overcomethe above and other defects in. surface v i s; it is m re part cular y an o j ct of my invention to provide a silrjace drainwhich is simple in construction, cheap indcos t, eflicient in operation, and easy to instail.
Another object of myinvention ie toprovid e a surface drain which will intercept oii, gasoline,
or other liquids lighter than water and to fi lther provide'means for indicating the need for re- 'movai of the intercepted fluids. H
Another object of my inventio is to provide "surfacedrains wherein efficient means are provided for indicating the clogging ofthe straining member of the drain Without flooding the Anotherobject of my invention to provide a simple means for removing the strained refuse from the drain. e U .t I Another object of my invention isto provide movable through the inlet opening;
Another obje t o m nventi n. i a provid a surface drain wherein aseal is provided to re- "a surface drain which has ail parts thereof rehead in the. straining memberattaining a predetermined height.
- Another object of my invention is to piroride a surface drain which will prevent/oil and other I substanceslighter than water from passing .to
the drain line. I j a I Another object of my inveutionrs to proy de a double seal in a drain line when the (liquid win the drain attains a predetermined height; Another object of. my invention '15 t r i a dead air sp ce b t s alineport ons ofthe drain. I e o j ct or my invention is to prgyid tend the entrance of water and thefiike upon the I S n e ns n a drain to prevent rolatile passing therefrom. f
Qth81"0bJBCtS of my i vention will become ev dent from the trollowingdetai ed description a-en 1n conjunc ion with the 3G I drawing in which; r 0mm A Fig.1js a side elevational yiew in of my novel surface drain. Fig. 2 1s atop plan view of dra n. r e V r Fig. 3 is a View taken on the Fig.1.- I d i Referring to the drawingjl i s. .1, .2 and 3 show cross section novel surface vi i i a n rising generally-an upper gylmdimal member I a ged cutwam yatz, an I a lower cylindrical member 3 flanged outwardly at for the receptionofthfi lowerilertion 0f the eyhndrical member I. Suitable sealing material 5 s provided between the flange l and the Icyl'mdrical member 1 outlet Bjin the bottom of the cylindrical member 3 leads .to a drain line th h a me t cham er 8.. HA backwater 'valve 9 is'disposed inthecleanont chamber 8.
Coming n w o the gist. ofnmr invention, .1 show a cylindrical straining member having apertures I l and I2 in the sides and bottom thereof for straining sediment and the-like from the water beforeitpasses tothe drain line]. Thestraining member .li} hasan linperiorated p n 13 1 h uppe end thereof and it also ha n o tw dl xte d nc.,supportin member M which seats onthe 10012159111 ,Suriace lief-the i d d rt on of the upper y indrieal member I. Disposed on the supporting member !4 is a flanged member lfi havin -a central aperture J1 and two concentrically disposed outer and inner depending flanges I18 and 19.
p-shaped member 20 is suppprted by we wardly extending flanges 21 at the base thereof to the bottom portion of the outer depending flange '18. The sides of the'c-up-shaped member '20 extendabove "the lowermost-portion of the inner depending flange 1-8." A bar type grate 2 4s is disposed on and siipported by the flanged member #6. The outer depending flange H? extends a predetermined distance below the inner flangelt.
In operation; Water '21 which strains the larger particles of sediment and the'iikef-roin the liquid passin to the drain.
Thlefwater a ,s di an other liquid pass ow r y he a e ture H in the flanged .member e m b d member 2.0 and O e flow t e ef om into the straining me r e tera ed em e 11 i 9: Leonapasses throngh. the grate sign that the solids will be flushed therefrom and not retained therein. A seal is constantly provided between the inner depending flange l8 and the innersides of the cup-shaped member in that the liquids must pass over the sides of the cup-shaped member 20 to reach the straining member liland the drain line '1. After the liquid reaches the straining member ID, the sediment is strained therefrom and the water passes laterally outwardly therefrom and passes through the aperture 6 to the drain line I. Liquids such as oil, gasoline and other liquids lighter than water remain suspended on the top surface of the water in the drain. The outer drain line is of a height which approaches the top row of apertures II in the straining member ID, and it is, therefore, necessary to have the liquid in the drain at a greater head than that of the drain line in order vided between th cup-shaped member 28 and the depending flange 19. It will be evident that at this point, a double seal is provided, one in the inner and top portion of the cup-shaped member and the other in the outer and lower portion of the cup-shaped member. It will further be seen that a dead air space at this time exists between the two seals. With the double seal and the dead air space, the water entering the drain will be retarded to such an extent that it will be noted by the attendant or other person in the vicinity of the drain. Flooding of the area surrounding thesurface of the drain is preventedbecause upon a sufficient head being present above the grate 2|, water will be forced through the double seal and dead air space. An aperture 22 may be provided in the upper cylindrical member I to drain off the intercepted oil, gasoline or the like.
It will be evident that I have provided a drain which indicates the filling of a sediment bucket in a drain and further indicates a pre-determined head of oil, gasoline or the like on the surface of the water in the drain, the said drain being so constructed that no flooding of the area of the surface of the drain will take place.
It will be further evident upon inspection that the straining member may be removed through ing member supported in said outer member, an
outlet chamber leading from said outlet in said outer casing upwardly and outwardly at a point in a horizontal plane with the upper portion of said straining, member, a centrally apertured member supported in the upper portion of'said straining member having an inner dependingcylindrical flange and an outer depending cylindrical flan e, and a cup-shaped member disposed under and around the lower portion of said inner flange to form a seal between said inner flange r .1 and the inner side of said cup-shaped member.
ber leading upwardly and outwardly from said outlet in said outer casing at a point in the upper portion said outer casing, a centrally apertured member disposed in the upper portion, said outer member having an'inner depending cylindrical flange and an outer depending cylindrical flange disposed concentrically of said inner flange, and
a cup-shaped member disposed below and around said depending inner flange having the sides thereof disposed above the lowermost portion of said inner depending flange.
, 3. In a surface drain, in combination, an outer member having a seating surface on the top portion thereof and an outlet in the lower portion 20 thereof, an outletpipe leading upwardly from said outlet, a perforated straining member having outwardly flared supporting members seated on the seating surface of said outer member, an outlet chamber extending from said outlet in 25 said outer member upwardly, and outwardly at a point in a horizontal plane withthe, upper portionof said straining member, a centrallyapertured member disposed in the upper portion of said outer member having an inner depending cylindrical flange and an outer depending cylindrical flange, the lowermost portion of said outer flange extending below said inner flange, and a cup-shaped member having the sides there- I of extending above thelowermost portion of said inner depending flange. f
