Sept. 23, 1958 G. GOLD DIVIDED PANTIES FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN Filed April 26. 1957 llanlni'vlllllll INVENTOR GEORGE GOLD ATTO United States Patent Ofi ice 2,852,780 Patented Sept. 23, 1958 DIVIDED PANTIES FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN George Gold, Harrison, N. Y. Application April 26, 1957, Serial No. 655,342
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-224 This invention relates to divided panties for women and children. I
The principal object of this invention is the provision of divided panties which may be worn by women and children and which automatically open at the crotch and back when the wearer assumes a spread-legged sitting position. Conversely, the panties automatically close at the crotch and back when the wearer changes such position and assumes, for example a standing position or a normal sitting position.
Panties made in accordance with this invention are provided with a continuous slit which extends along the entire crotch and up the back. The crotch itself consists of two crotch pieces which are normally disposed in overlapping positions, the crotch being thereby closed. The back is made of two panels which are also normally disposed in overlapping positions. When in such positions, the back is closed.
The crotch pieces and the back panels may be continuous with each other or separate pieces attached to each other. In the preferred form of this invention, each back panel is continuous with one of the crotch pieces, being made of the same piece of cloth. In the preferred form of this invention, the back panel which normally overlies the other back panel is continuous with that crotch piece which normally overlies the other crotch piece.
Panties of the character described are provided with two leg openings ringed with elastic bands. These bands normally encircle the thighs of the wearer relatively snugly so that any lateral movement of the thighs will cause a corresponding lateral movement of those portions of the panties which encircle the thighs.
For the purposes of the specification and claim, the portions of the panties which encircle the thighs, Whether made of elastic or non-elastic material, and whether extending longitudinally of the thighs or not, will be designated the leg portions of the panties.
It will be understood that each pair of panties is provided with two leg portions and that each leg portion is connected to a crotch piece and back panel assembly. Consequently, when the thighs of the wearer are spread apart, the leg portions of the panties will also spread apart, carrying with them and in opposite directions the two crotch piece and back panel assemblies. This will remove each said assembly from overlapping position relative to the other assembly and will cause the panties to open along the crotch and back. Conversely, when the Wearers thighs are brought together, the two leg portions will also be brought together, thereby moving the two crotch and back assemblies into overlapping relationship. The panties will now be closed at the crotch and back.
An important feature of this invention is the fact that the overlapping crotch and back portions provide a double layer of material in the very area in which the added protection of a double layer is so valuable. But the two layers are nonetheless free from each other in the sense that they merely overlap and are not permanently secured to each other in overlapping positions. Consequently, these two layers are more readily cleaned and dried.
There is a further feature of great importance and that feature resides in the relative freedom of movement of the wearers legs when compared with that aiforded by conventional panties. This freedom of movement results from the fact that each crotch and back assembly is transversely movable relative to the other.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. .l is a front view of a pair of panties made in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a back view thereof partly broken away to show its inside construction.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
It will be noted in Fig. 1 that panty 10 is provided with a front panel 12 and a pair of side front panels 14 and 16 respectively. A crotch piece 18 anda second crotch piece 20 are secured along their upper edges by means of scam 22 to the front panel 12. Scam 24 joins.
front panel 12 with side panel 14 and at its lower end said seam also joins the two crotch pieces to side panel 14. Scam 26 joins the front panel 12 to the side panel 16 and the lower end of said seam joins the two crotch portions to said side panel 16.
Reference to Fig. 2 will disclose the fact that there are two side back panels 14a and 16a respectively and it will be observed in Fig. 4 that these side back panels may be continuous with the side front panels 14 and 16. It will now be noted that there are two back panels 30 and 32. Panel 30 is continuous with side panel 14a and panel 32 is continuous with side panel 16a. Furthermore, panel 30 is continuous at its lower end with crotch piece 18 while panel 32 is continuous at its lower end with crotch piece 20.
It therefore appears that this garment comprises the following elements: A front panel 12, a front side panel which extends around to the back of the panty and constitutes a back side and back panel and which is continuous along the crotch of the garment to form a crotch piece, and a second front side panel which extends around to the back of the panty and constitutes a second back side and back panel and which is continuous along the crotch of the garment to form a second crotch piece. There are therefore only three pieces of cloth in the entire garment constituting the preferred construction.
At the top of the panty is an elastic band 34 which encircles the waist of the wearer. There are two leg openings 36 and 38 which are encircled, respectively, by elastic bands 40 and 42. It will be noted that band 42 is secured to the lower edge of-front side panel 16 and to the lower edge of back side panel 16a and along the side edge of crotch piece 20. By the same token, elastic band 40 is secured to the lower edge of front side panel 14 and the lower edge of back side panel 14a and along the edge of crotch piece 18. The portions of the garment which encircle the two leg openings, including the two elastic bands 40 and 42, may be considered the leg portions of the garment.
It will now be observed that the two crotch pieces 18 and 20 are disposed in overlapping positions, crotch piece 18 overlying crotch piece 20. Similarly, the two back panels 30 and 32 are also disposed in overlapping positions, back panel 30 overlying back panel 32. Since crotch piece 18 and back panel 30 are continuous with each other, they may be deemed to constitute a crotch and back assembly and this is also true of the other crotch piece 20 and the other back panel 32 which are also continuous with each other and may be deemed to comprise a second crotch and back assembly. It will be clearly understood that the first crotch and back assembly 18, 30 is disposed to overlap and overlie the second crotch and back assembly 2}), 32.
Each said crotchand back assembly is independently movable laterally of the other. It is therefore possible to move them outwardly and away from each other out of overlapping relationship. They will thereby move apart and the panty will be open along the crotch and up the back. This would take place when the legs of the wearer are spread apart. The leg portions which surround the leg openings 36 and 38 include the two crotch pieces and therefore when said leg portions move apart upon the spreading of the legs, said crotch pieces and the back panels which are continuous with them will also move apart and cause an opening of the crotch and back of the garment.
The foregoing is illustrative of a preferred form of this invention and it will be understood that this preferred form may be modified and other forms may be included Within the broad spirit of the invention and the broad scope of the claim.
I claim: p
A panty which opens at the crotch and back but remains closed at the front when the legs of the wearer are spread apart, said panty having an elastic band at the top adapted to encircle the waist of a wearer, a front panel extending downwardly from said elastic band to the crotch, a pair of normally overlapping back panels also extending downwardly from the elastic band, said back panels extending around the sides of the garment, one side edge of each back panel being stitched to a side edge of the front panel on opposite sides thereof, and
' the other side edges of the back panels being left free,
legs of the wearer causes said back panels and crotch pieces to move apart and thereby to open the back and crotch of the panty.
