SPECIFICATION" forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,073, dated September 18, 1883.

To all whom it. may concern:

Be it .known that we, Cnnnnns A. RAIN- WATER, Josnrn H. RAINWATER, and ALMA- RINE P. Rnnvwn'rnn., citizens of the United States residing at Veazey, in the county of Greene and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Gultivator, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 1o This invention relates to an improved convertible plow and cultivator; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, having Vfor their objects to produce a device which shall possess superior 15 advantages in point of simplicity, durability,

and genera-l efficiency, as will be 'hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. i

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 2o is a perspective view of our improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the saine convertedinto a plow; and Eig. 3 is a detail view.

To the upper and under sides of the 3o said beam are secured plates D D', extending in rear of the beam, the lower plate, D', being provided at its rear end with a down turned hook, E. The plates D and D are secured to the beam by vertical bolts F F and G, the latter of which is provided with an eye, H, at its lower end. The rear projecting ends of the plates D and D are also provided with openings I, adapted to receive a bolt, J, as will be presently set forth.

4o K is a beam or bar, one end of which is turned in an upward direction at an angle to the body of the said bar, which is provided with a vertical slot, L, extending throughout its entire length.

l? is a ring or link adjusted upon the shank of the front tooth M, and connected by a hooked rod, Q, iwith the eye H at the lower end of the bolt G. In this manner the bar K is held steadily and securely at the required angle to the beam during operation of the device. v

The device may, when desired, be converted into a plow. This is done in the following manner: The teeth M M are detached from the bar K, and the latter removed from its position between the rearwardly-projecting ends of the plates D D. The upturned end of bar K is then placed under the rear end of the lower plate, D, with the hooked end of the latter adjusted in the slot L, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 ofthe drawings. A bolt, J, is then passed through the slot L and up through the perforations I in the plates D D, between which a sleeve, S, is adjusted upon the said bolt, in order to prevent the plates D D from being drawn together when the nut is tightened upon the said bolt. Upon the lower end of the bar K, which now forms the plow-stock, the plow T is secured by means of a bolt, U, passing through the link I), which is connected, as before, by the hooked rod Q with the eye H of bolt G, thus serving to brace the plow-stockagainst 'the strain tof which it will be subjected.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of our invention will be Vreadily understood. It is simple, convenient, easily manipulated, and may be readily changed from one to another of the several forms herein shownand described.
