UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
SANFORD w. LASOR, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR To CYRUS CHAMBERS, JR, or SAME PLACE.
SAND-SCRAPER FOR BRICK-MACHINES.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,043, dated September 18, 1883.
Application filed February 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, SANFORD W. LAsoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Scrapers for Brick-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Thisinventionisdesignedtoimprovetheconstruction and operation of the devices termed scrapers or wipers, which are used,
. in connection with the brick-making machines purpose of removing surplus sand from thetop and sides of the sanded bar of clay before it issues from the sand-box on its way to the cut-off mechanism.
The nature of my improvement will clearly appear from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is atop viewof a sand-box and scraper-frame provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line a b, Fig. 2.
That the operation of my improvement, which, as above stated, relates only to the scrapers or wipers, may be readily understood without other reference, I shall first briefly describe the general arrangement and purpose of such sand-scrapers.
The bar of clay, (indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 3, as it emerges from the die D of aChambers machine, enters the sandbox B, the sand falling in a continuous and liberal stream from the hopper H through openings 71,, leading from the latter into the sandbox, Figsjl and 2. The clay bar becomes thus well coated with sand, and as it advances the surplus is removed by means of top and side scrapers, R, secured in aframe, A, which (as recently made by said Cyrus Chambers, J r., and as shown in the drawings) is hinged to the hopper of the sand-box.
Heretofore the scrapers It have been made of quite flexible india rubber fixed in the scraper-frame, so that while they scraped off the surplus of sand from the bar of clay they would yield sidewise to obstructions, or when from any cause the dimensions of the clay bar became enlarged to any considerable extent. The operation of these scrapers has not, however, been wholly satisfactory at all times, for the reason that, in order to permit the necessary giving way to obstructions, the rubber hadto be too flexible; and, besides, there was no reliable and accurate means for adjusting the scrapers.
My present improvement is intended to and does remedy these defects.
It consists in securing the scrapers R (which are preferably made of sheet-rubber of suitable thickness and consistency) to clamps C, that are provided with guide-rods E, working in bearings in brackets T, fastened to the frame A, and with compression-springs S.
The inward movement or extension .of the scrapers toward the bar of clay is regulated by means of a collar, M, on the end of each of the guide-rods E, and the tension of the springs S, by means of a collar, N, also upon the guiderods, as shown. Thus it is obvious, while provision is made for the scrapers to give way, they are made sufficiently rigid, are held to their work, and may be nicely and readily adjusted with relation to the bar of clay. g
'I do not confine myself to the identical arrangement of the springs and scrapers, nor to the kind of spring, nor to the specific means for adjusting the tension and throw of the scrapers shown but What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. In combination with the sand-box of a brick-machine, the sliding scrapers and tension-springs, constructed, combined, and .op-
erating substantially as and for the purposes described. I
2. The combination of the sand-box, the scrapers, the guide-rods working in suitable bearings, the springs, and the adjusting-collars, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 1st day of February,
SANFORD w. LAson.
