Be it known that I, JULIAETTE W. B. Cnn- ,PENN-3R, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a 5 certain new and useful Improvement in Halters, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved halter detached, a portion of the same being represented in section; Fig. 2, an isometrical perspective view representing it in use; and Fig. 3, a sectional view, showing the hook and means of connecting and adjusting the same.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

My invention relates to that class of halters which are employed for hitching horses 5 and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective and desirable article of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary. y

In the drawings, A represents the body of' the\halter, B the attaching-hook, and C the bit-hook.

The body is composed of concentric coils of elastic wire, the layers of each coil acting contractivelyto press rmly against each other throughout its entire length.y `One or more coils may be used, according to the size of the wire or the strength it is desired to give the halter; but for all ordinary purposes I have found three sufficient for the strongest halters, the inner coil being closely wrapped by that in the middle or center, and this in turn by that on the outside, as shown in Fig. 1.

The body of the hook C is provided with a Vlongitudinal socket, m, extending nearly its entire length, and also with a laterally-projecting set-screw, x.

A short rod or stud, G, provided at its inner end with` the rounded head f, is inserted in the end of the body A, as best seen in Fig. 1, the head engaging the coils of wire and preventing the rod from being withdrawn. A thimble or socket, H, having the end or head J, is fitted onto the end of the body A, serving to hold the coils of wire in proper position at that point, and also to sustain the rod G, which passes closelyrthrough a hole, Z, in said head. The outer end ofthe rod is adapted to enter the socket m, and isprovided with a series of washers, t t', which are disposed on the Same between the thimble H and inner end of the body of the hook C, as seen in Fig. 3.

'In attaching the bit-hook C to the body A the rod G is first inserted in the end of the body, as shown in Fig. 1, its head F being pushed in until it has passed several layers of the wire, in order to give it a rm hold thereon. The thimble H is then passed over the rod and end of the body, after which the washers are placed on the rod and the rod inserted in the socket m, where it is fastened by the setscrew x.

In Fig. 3 a snap -hcok provided with ahinged bar, d, and spring h is shown, the spring acting expansively to force the bar outward and close the hook.

In Fig. 1 the washers z' and thinible H are represented as removed, and a spring, g, is shown, the spring itself -acting to close the hook without the aid of a bar. This part of the device, however, may be varied as desired, as I'do not confine myself to the use of any special form of snap-hook, or to a hook having a snap, or means for closing the saine, as any suitable hook adapted to be attached to the rod G or ring E, as the case may be, will Vanswer every purpose.

it will yield sufficiently to prevent breakage or other injury. It is also important that `it should be nicely adjusted as to length, especially Where the horse is constantly hitchedin the stall. These requisites are fully met by my improvement, the body of the halter being sufficiently rigid for all ordinary tethering purposes, and sufiiciently elastic to prevent injury to the halter or horse from sudden movements ofits head, or in case it gets accidentally cast in the stall.

Each end of the halter may be provided with a hook ofthe construction shown in Fig. 3, if desired. The hook B may also be omitted, and this end of the halter provided with other means of attaching it to theY post or crib, if preferred. The head of the thimble H may be left off, if desired, and the hook C provided with a shoulder or boss, fu, as shown in Fig. 1, so that when the Washers are not used the boss Will form a support for the ends of the coils of Wire. The ring E may also be omitted and the hook B attached directly'to the body A 5 or the hook may be omitted and the ring attached directly to the bitching-post, as shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a bitching-halter, substantially such as described, the hook C, stud G, and screw :17, in combination With the body A, constructed, combined, and Varranged to operate substantially as specified.

2. In a hitehing-halter, substantiallysuch as described, the thimble H, in combination with the body A and headed stud G, for keeping the coils of Wire in proper position and holding` the inner coil in engagement With the head ofthe rod, substantially as set forth.
