UNITED STATES PATE T rrrcn LOUIS BLOEDON, OF BAY'OITY, MICHIGAN. I
BED-BOTTOM FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,802, dated September 11, 1883.
Application filed March 20, 1883. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LOUIS BLoEDoN, of Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottom Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
- My invention relates to improvements in combined fire-escapes and bed-bottoms, in which abottom composed of independent rigid ladder-sections is capable, by joinder of the sections, of servingthepurpose of afire escape; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to convert the parts readily into a fire-escape or bed-bottom, as desired; second, to dispense with the necessity of having a stationary fastening at the top for the escape; third, to economize time in the conversion and utiliza tion of the fire-escape; and, fourth, to accomplish these ends with simplicity of construction. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 represents a plan view of the apparatus capable of being used as abed-bottom.
' Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a bed having the bottom in place. Fig.3 is a rear-elevation of the bed, illustrating the relative location of the parts while used as a bottom. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the two adjoining ends of the in dependent ladders, showing the method of securing them together when they are to be used as a fire-escape; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the bed-bottom when used as a fireby the ladders, the ladders of one story may be made to coincide with thoseof another; or alarger number of ladder-sections maybe used, which can be provided for by increasing the width of the bed or by decreasing the width of the ladders, or by the superposition of the ladders.
F F are rods serving to connect adjacent sections of ladder. Preferably these are made headed on one end and perforated at the other end, when, with the aid of a pin, the sections are secured together.
G G are the steps of the ladder.
H is the head, I I are the sides, and J the foot of the bedstead.
When it is. desired to convert the bottom into a fire escape, the ladder-sections are j oined in the manner shown, and the bar A, being of greater width than the window, adapts itself to any position with perfect safety.
I am aware that heretofore a bed-bottom and bedstead convertibleinto a fireescape has been constructed so that the side pieces of each ladder-section are coincident and parallel; but in my device the width of each ladder-section decreases upwardly, so that the side pieces of any section fit in those of thesection adjoining it below.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 80 A bed-bottom capable of conversion into a fire-escape, composed of loose, independent, tapering rigid ladder-sections G D E, of such number as to reach by joinder from the apartment wherein the bed is located toa place of safety, and which are accommodated either by superposition or by increasing the width of the bedstead, in combinationwith the bed-' stead II I I J, bar A, cord B, and headed rods F, held in place by suitable pins, for the purpose herein fully specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' LOUIS BLOEDON.
Witnesses:
