COUPLING-GEAR -FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,593, dated September 11, 1883,

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER T. BARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Coupling-Gear of Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for attaching the hounds to the reach of a wagon, whereby a round reach or coupling-pole can be used, and the coupling can be shortened to a greater extent by passing the sway-barunder the hounds.
In the ordinary reach-plate the reach passes between the flanges of the plate, and the coupling can only be shortened to the point where the sway-bar comes in contact with the reachplate. \Vith such plates a square reach is used. In my invention a round reach may be used, as in the oldfashioned wagons, where the hounds were connected by bands and the coupling was effected by an adjustable band and pin. My invention is intended to secure the advantages of each and avoid the objections to either.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gearing of a wagon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved reach-plate. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bottom.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.
A is the reach of the wagon, in this instance a round pole, and BB are the hounds of the hind axle. The hounds are connected by a '0 on the inner faces of the hounds.

The sway-bar E of the front gear lies under the reach, and as that extends below the plate 0, there is nothing to prevent the shortening of the coupling to such an extent that the swaybar may pass underneath the reach-plate G.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a wagon, of a round reach, A, and a reach-plate, 0, having a concave recess to receive the reach formed in the under face of the body 0 and recesses in angles formed by the body and the horizontal 7 Wings GO, to receive the hounds, whereby the lower surface of the reach is carried below the plane of the bottom of the hounds, so as to permit the shortening of the coupling, substantially as setforth.
