WRENCH FOR WAGON AXLE NUTS. V 284,5211 Patented Sept. 4, 188.3. V
WITNESSES INVBNTOR im/WM ATTORNEYS.
UNITIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS L. WHITACRE, OF EAST ROCHESTER, OHIO;
WRENCH FOR WAGON-AXLE NUTS.
SPECIFICATION forming which the following is a full, clear, and exact -piece will throw the nut-holding end forward out of a perpendicular line, as shown in the drawing.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which a perspective View of my improved wrench for wagon-axle nuts is shown.
The key or wrench A is provided at one end with a squared socket or aperture, B, .for re-' ceiving the nut, and at the opposite end with a hook, O, projecting from the shank of the key in the same direction as the nut-socket. At the hook end the shank is also provided with a handle, D, projecting in the inverse direction of the hook, which handle is free to turn on its longitudinal axis. If a nut is to be loosened from a wagon-axle to remove the part of Letters PatentNo. 284,521, dated September 4, 1883.
Application filed February 1883. (MoieL) wheel, the nut is passed into the aperture 13, and the key or wrench is turned by means of the handle D until the nut is removed, the nut remaining in the squared socket B. The
key is then hung on a rod, E, or any other part of the vehicle, by means of the hook O,
which gives the key such an inclination or pitch that the nut cannot fall out of the socket. After the axle has been greased and the wheel replaced the nut can easily be screwed on the axle by means of the key. The nut can be screwed on and off by using one hand only, the fingers and hands are not soiled, the nut need not'be placed on the ground, and thus is not apt to get coated with sand and dirt, and the wrench and key are not apt to be dropped.
In using the keys or wrenches of the usual construction the nut and key have to be laid down after the nut has been removed, and in doing so the nut is apt to drop from the key and get sandy, which sand cuts the axle.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby'Letters Patent S A wrench having the nutsocket B at one end and on opposite sides of the other end, the hook O, and hand-piece D, as and for the purpose specified.
