It is an objective of this invention'to provide a notebook-handbag combination.

A lady, and particularly a woman student, has need for taking notes or writing letters while away from home. To carry a pad of paper in a handbag is very inconvenient because of the bulk of the paper and besides a pad of paper does not have a sufliciently rigid back to write upon in the absence of a supplemental backing of the pad.

According to thisinvention, the notebook platform is very rigid and will permit writing even when the notebook is rested upon the writer's lap or knees. Thus, for example, travelers in aeroplanes can write letters while seated.

Moreover, where a female student uses this notebookhandbag combination she dispenses with the need for carrying a separate notebook for class room notes and thereby avoids the possibility of losing valuable lecture notes.

Other advantages to the user of this notebook-handbag combination are present, for example, the combination may be made in the size of a small evening purse with a single rigid swingable platform having paper thereon for the taking of phone numbers, addresses, etc. during the course of a conversation.

Turning now to the drawing, a plastic conventional handbag is provided with a conventional carry strap 11 secured as by heat fusion, and a zipper 12 for closing the handbag aperture.

The handbag of this invention is further provided with a swingable rigid platform secured to the conventional handbag. The securing of the swingable platform to the handbag compartment may be integral with a side wall of the handbag or the platform may be a separate unit Patented July 29, 1958 secured, for example, by. sewing, adhesiveyor otherconventional means to the handbag compartment.

Where a strip 17 is used, a four sided pocket or channeled rectangular rim is formed. The platform 16 is disposed in this pocket (Figs. 1 and 2) and preferably, but optionally, secured immovably therein by stitching 20 where the nature of the platform material permits 5 stitching as in the case of semi-rigid leather or linoleum.

Turning now to Fig. 5, there is shown an embodiment made from two parts, namely a purse 25 and a double platform 26. The purse 25 is made of flexible plastic and may be closed by a zipper or by pressure seizure knobs 27. The base of the purse 25 is provided with a substantially flat base wall 28 having preferably but optionally longitudinal opposed integral flanges 29.

The double platform part 26 of the notebook-purse combination is preferably a molded one piece flexible plastic structure having opposed inwardly directed U- shaped channels 30. A platform channel 30 is thus provided in each wall section forming the outer walls of the notebook-purse combination. The channel 30 of one outer wall is suitably spaced-apart from the channel 30 in the opposed outer Wall of the platform 26 to permit the base 28 of purse 25 to be secured therebetween and to the median line area of side platform 26. The securing of the purse 25 to the double platform 26 is by conventional means and preferably is by fusion or adhesive.

As shown in Fig. 5, the channels 30 are each provided with a pair .of cut-outs 31 disposed respectively adjacent used. v

The separate platforms of the double platform part of the notebook purse combination of Fig. form a pair 4 of opposed double outer walls of the purse when the notebook platforms are closed. Clearly each platform wall is separately or independently opened. A rigid platform element 34 is inserted into the channel 30 of a wall and held therein by pressure fit to the channel inner surfaces. To insert a platform 34 into the Wall the purse 25 is moved to the left (Fig. 5) in the direction of the arrow until the plane of the adjacent purse side wall 34X is in substantial continuous planar relationship to the plane of the inner surface of the adjacent platform wall. This exposes the edges of the cut-outs 31 in a manner permitting the rigid platform 34 to he slipped into place in the channel 30.

Optionally a pad of suitably perforated paper 35, with or without a rigid back, may be inserted into a channel 30 and held therein by pressure fit and seizure of the channel 30 walls to the paper. Where multiple sheets are used in the form of a pad, the sheets themselves present a rigid platform. The perforations 36 of the pad 35 are disposed exterior of the channel 30 along the three exposed edges of the outer platform wall, thereby facilitating tearing out of a sheet of paper after a written message has been entered thereon.

This invention has been illustrated and described by means of a plurality of embodiments but clearly it is broader than these illustrations. Clearly such innovations as a sewn pocket 37 (Fig. 2) for holding stationery and pockets 38 for pencils and rulers are optionally added, if desired.

I claim:

1. A two-piece notebook-purse combination comprising a purse element having a substantially fiat base; a double platform element secured at its median area to said base of said purse element, said double platform element having opposed platforms each having a U- shaped channel, each of said channels having a pair of cut-outs at their respective ends to facilitate insertation of a flat rigid element.

2. The combination of claim 1 comprising a rigid platform disposed in pressure fit relationship in one platform wall and a pad of suitably perforated paper in the other platform,wall.
