JOHN E. MOLINN, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRAVELING BAG.
Application filed June 20, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J 01m P. MOLINN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Traveling Bag, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to traveling bags and has for its especial purpose the provision in an effective, compact, and accessible manner, of means and facilities for correspondence or writing of any kind, together with provisions for the systematic preservation of important papers and the necessary equipment of correspondence.
It is essential in a device of this nature that the part of the structure containing the additional facilities, shall be sightly, compactly planned so that it will not occupy much space, and designed so that it can be easily opened up for use, and just as readily closed again when it has served its purpose.
When traveling, writing facilities and accommodations are frequently needed on trains and in similar places, and if the matcrials therefor are packed in the main body of the bag together with clothing and other articles of that nature it is most inconvenient to have to either partially or entirely unpack the whole bag to obtain the desired materials.
A firm surface on which to write in the form of a writing pad is also provided in my invention, which is more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of the bag, shown in a closed position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the attachment containing the writing facilities section, opened out ready for use.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form of traveling bag in a closed position.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the form shown in Fig. 4, opened for use.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on-the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the reference numeral 10 indicates a traveling bag of the usual type intended to contain wearing apparel and similar articles.
At the lower, outside edge of one side of this bag, the writing pad 11 is secured in such a manner that it can be dropped down Serial 1W0. 569,697.
to a horizontal position as shown in Fig.- 2, 0r swung up to a vertical position and held there by the flap 12. A pocket 13, for
the reception of pads, paper, envelopes,
pens or other writing material is provided on the side of the bag, to the lower edge of which the writing pad 11 is secured.
To the vertical edges at either end of one side of the bag, the two flaps 1 l14E are attached by hinges so that they may he swung open as shownin Fig. 2, or closed inside of the writing pad' 11, as shown in Fig. 1. These two flaps 141-441 are also provided with pockets 1515, in which stationery, unanswered letters, postal cards and similar articles may be carried.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, there is no provision for the carrying of wearing apparel and the like, this bag being intended for daily use. or on short trips, or as an auX- iliary to a larger bag or trunk in which the articles of greater bulk may be packed.
In the three last named figures the bag is indicated by the reference numeral 16, the writing pad is indicated by the numeral 17 and the retaining flap 18 serves to hold the pad 17 in position when the bag is closed as shown in Fig. 4.
The pocket 19 serves the same purpose as the pocket 13 shown in Figs. 2 and 3 but on one of the side flaps 20-20, a means 22 for receiving and retaining toilet articles is provided. 7
A will be obvious, this form of the device furnishes a most convenient traveling comfort, in which the articles likely to he needed are entirely accessible at all times.
I claim In a traveling bag the. combination of the following elements; an upright section provided with receptacles adapted to contain writing materials; end members hingedly secured to the said upright section and adapted to contain correspondence; a writ ing pad hingedly secured to the lower front edge of the said upright section; and a flap member hingedly secured to the upper front edge of the upright section and adapted to lock the other members in closed position on the bag.
JOHN P. MoLlNN.
