Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P. ELLICOTT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO PHELAN AND COLLENDER, OF NElV YORK CITY, N. I.
CHALK-HOLDER FOR BILLIARD-TABLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,435, dated May 22, 1860.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES P. ELLICOTT, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chalk-Cups for Billiard-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, represents a side view. Fig. 2, a front view, and Fig. 3, a vertical section of the device.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts. To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A stationary jaw b, b, is fastened to a billiard table by means of a fiange a.
A movable jaw o, f, is hinged to the sta tionary jaw by means of a pivot d, placed between the forward and the rear end of jaw c, j". The rear part of jaw c, f, is provided with a weight g, which (being behind the fulcrum d,) has a tendency to close the front part c of the movable jaw against the stationary j aw, and will thus serve to hold or clamp a piece of chalk (used in billiard playing) between the two jaws.
The weight g, being light will easily yield when it is desired to take the chalk from or to insert it again between the jaws. Both jaws are provided with suitable cavities (as seen at and GQ) for better securing the chalk, when placed between the jaws.
The box or drawer as used heretofore for containing the chalk, when left open (as is frequently the case) is apt to interfereI with the person playing and soil his clothes with chalk dust.
In the device above described the chalk is always confined between the jaws, and can in no manner come in contact with the clothes of the player.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the lower pivoted aw o, g, constructed as described, with the stationary aw b, o, for the purposes set forth.
JAMES P. ELLICOTT.
