MEANS FOR TRANSPORTATION 0F VISCOUS LIQUIDS Filed Aug. 16, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. zur! Jfdrfie r United States Patent ()f MEANS FOR TRANSPORTATION OF VISCOUS LIQUIDS Kurt Korber, Hamburg-Bergedorf, Germany, assignor to Kurt Korber & C0., many Application August 16, 1955, Serial No. 528,606 Claims priority, application Germany July 31, 1954 Claims. (Cl. 103-84) This invention relates to means for transportation of viscous liquids and particularly to a device for transportation of glue in the manufacture offilter cigarettes.
In connection with bodies, such as rollers, which are immersed in viscous liquids and caused to rotate therein it is a well known fact that during the rotation in the liquid through the clinging or sticking of the liquid due to the adhesion forces thereof velocity increases occur which cause shear stresses that, particularly in liquids of high viscosity such as glue, can assume considerable values.
According to the invention, said fact is utilized for creation of a transportation pressure in a novel devicewhich is readily and inexpensively manufactured and requires a minimum of attendance while meeting all the requirements for automatic transportation, such as uniform transportation, control of the quantity transported, maintenance of the consistency, and disturbance-free start of the transportation following prolonged periods of idleness.
The invention essentially consists of a roller rotating in the liquid container and provided with a groove-shaped recess for the primary transporting of the liquid, said roller cooperating with an outlet that extends tangentially in relation to the recess, in such a way that liquid positively transported in the recess through the adhesion leaves the outlet under pressure.
Above the outlet, a funnel-shaped constriction member is provided which has edges that scrape off the liquid from the periphery of the roller and otherwise are directed towards the outlet whereby the abovementioned transportation pressure is further increased. Thus, the device operates as a pump. In order to permit control of the transported quantity, when required, the cross-section of the passage formed by the funnel-shaped constriction member and the groove-shaped roller recess is variable by means of an adjustment member.
Two embodiments of the invention in association With a machine for the manufacture of filter cigarettes are shown in the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a section through the transportation device,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device of Fig. l, with the cover removed, and
Fig. 3 shows a section through a modified embodiment of the invention.
The glue 2 contained in a receptacle 1 is, according to the invention, moved through the adhesion forces by means of a roller 4 secured to a shaft 3 and rotating in the direction of the arrow. In said roller, at the middle thereof and concentrical with the same, a grooveshaped recess 5 is provided, preferably of rectangular cross-section. Thereby, the size and shape of said crosssection together with the rotary velocity of the roller and the viscosity of the glue determine the obtained transportation quantity and the transportation pressure. The major portion of the transported glue is in the groove- K. G., Hamburg-Bergedorf, Ger- 2,843,047 Patented July 15, 1958 transportation conduit 11 and is transferred into a glue coating device 12 of known kind which is only partially" shown.
With some glue types it has been found that they must be stirred ever so often in order to obtain uniform consistency. For this purpose, the shaft 3 is provided with conveyor means comprising helical blades 13, 13a the inclination directions of which are opposite in such a way that a flow towards the middle of the glue receptacle and toward the end surfaces of the roller 4 occurs from the openings 14, 14a in the housing through which the shaft 3 extends from its bearings 15, which are secured to the outside of the housing with some space in between.
In the cover 16 of the glue receptacle there is a hole 17 into which a bolt 18 extends one end 19 of which is finger-shaped in such a way that it can extend into the rectangular recess 5. An adjustment screw 20 is rotatably mounted and guided in a plate 21 which is fixedly secured to the cover 16. The threaded end portion 22 of the screw 20 engages a threaded bore 23 in the bolt 18 that is secured against turning movement. According to the adjustment of the screw 20 the cross-section of the passage for the glue is increased or decreased at 24. Hereby, the transported quantity can be controlled over a wide range.
In the modified embodiment of Fig. 3, the glue roller 4' cooperates with a counter-roller 25. This embodiment has the advantage that the glue is still more uniformly worked and that crust formation at the glue surface is avoided through the continuous crushing between the two rollers. In this structure, the provision of helical blades for stirring is unnecessary.
