Applieation December i3, i955, Serial No. SSZJM3 3 Claims. (Cl. iii-35M T his invention relates to an adjustable mattress spring.
lt has for its main objects to provide such a mattress springy that will be highly satisfactory for the purpose intended, simple in structure, cheap to manufacture, easy to use and keep in satisfactory condition, and extremely durable.
Some people like to sleep upon what are designated as hard mattresses, and some people like to sleep upon what are designated as soft mattresses. The present invention provides simple means for adjusting the springs in an inner spring mattress or ordinary mattress springs so that the top surface may be rather hard or soft as desired.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the drawings and description.
By referring generally to the drawings, a part of this application, it will be observed that Fig. l is a plan View, with part of the top cut away, of an inner spring mattress having adjustable springs therein made according to this invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical edge view of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a crossasectional view of a portion of Fig. l; Fig. 4 is an enlarged plain View, part showing two springs; and Fig. 5, is a cross-sectional View of a portion of Fig. 4.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the mattress comprises cloth covering l, a plurality of springs having upper parts Z and lower parts 3. The upper spring parts are attached by their upper ends as at d to the under upper surface of the mattress top. The lower spring parts are attached by their lower ends as at 5 to the inner surface of the bottom of the mattress. Between each pair of spring parts a piece of threaded tube 6 is positioned with its top end closed by an integral part 7 that lits under a round member 8 that supports the bottorn end of the upper spring part. Part 7 has an integral groove around its outer lower edge portion for a control cord to work therein. A bolt 9 holds the parts together with the tube end revolvably attached on the bolt. A threaded nut 10 is mounted on the threads of the tube piece. A collar 1l is mounted around the lower part of the nut 10 and the collar is attached to the top end of the bottom part of the spring. The collars are held in alignment by connecting members 12 made of metal or fabric as desired. A control cord 13 is mounted around several times and attached to a plurality of spring assemblies in line with each other so that by pulling the cord in one direction it will draw the spring parts together, as shown in Fig. 3, and by pulling the cord in the opposite direction it will cause the spring parts to move apart as shown in Fig. 5 as a result of revolving the threaded tube in the ring on the spring end. There will be a separate cord for each line of springs as plainly shown in Fig. l. Zippers 14 are used on the inner spring mattress.
From the foregoing it will appear that by pulling all the cords in the same direction at one end of the mattress the surface of the top will be made more rigid, and by pulling all the cords in the opposite direction the surif, face of the top will be made more flexible; or if desired half the mattress top surface may be made rigid and the other half flexible to thus accommodate a very heavy person and a light Weight person on the same mattress. rThe adjusting cords may be provided at the sides of the mattress if desired.
Also from the foregoing it will appear that the spring structure shown may be used in an ordinary bed spring as well as in an inner spring mattress.
The various parts of the described structure may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, but I prefer to use the kinds of material generally used for springs and mattresses. Also the parts may be made in different sizes and capacities, depending on how and where to be used.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit same to the exact and precise details of structure, and reserve the right to make all modifications and changes so long as they remain within the scope of the invention and the following claims.
Having described my invention I claim:
l. An adjustable mattress spring for increasing the hardness or softness of the upper surface of the mattress comprising a pair of coiled wire springs each being approximately truncated-cone-shaped, a threaded member attached by one end revolvably to the smaller end of one of the pair, a nut with threads in its inner surface attached in fixed condition to the smaller end of the other one of the pair, said spring parts being disposed with their smaller ends facing each other to thus form an outline similar to an hour glass; a groove in the member attached revolvably, a control cord attached around in the said groove, said cord being adapted by manual means to revolve said threaded member that is attached revolvably and disposed to revolve in the threaded nut attached in fixed condition to the other spring part.
2. A mattress spring for increasing the hardness or softness of the upper surface of the mattress consisting of a plurality of springs, each of said springs comprising a pair of coiled wire springs each being approximately truncated-cone-shaped, a threaded member attached by one end revolvably to the smaller end of one of the pair, a nut with threads in its inner surface attached in fixed condition to the smaller end of the other one of the pair, said spring parts being disposed with their smaller ends facing each other to thus form an outline similar to an hour glass; a groove in the member attached revolvably, a control cord attached around in the said groove, said cord being adapted by manual means to revolve said threaded member that is attached revolvably and disposed to revolve in the threaded nut attached in fixed condition to the other spring part; said mattress spring having top and bottom connecting members, said plurality of springs mounted between said top and bottom connecting members, connecting members between said springs adapted to hold them in alignment, said control cords being around and attached to a plurality of said springs that are in alignment with each other.
3. An inner spring mattress for increasing the hardness or softness of the upper surface of the mattress consisting of a cloth cover and a plurality of springs, each of said springs comprising a pair of coiled wire springs each being approximately truncated-cone-shaped, a threaded member attached by one end revolvably to the smaller end of one of the pair, a nut with threads in its inner surface attached in fixed condition to the smaller end of the other one of the pair, said spring parts being disposed with tneir smaller ends facing each other to thus form an outline similar to an hour glass; a groove in the member attached revolvably, a control cord attached around in the said References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Johnson June 12, 1888 Gottschalk Apr. 29, 1952 FOREIGN PATENTS Great Britain Nov. 22, 1923
