(Cl. 118-3tl1) This invention relates to a spray gun attachment and to a spray device for coating or painting a wall surface area along its straight edge adjacent to and coinciding with the straight edge of a wall surface area directly adjacent thereto, comprising in combination, a spray gun and the said spray gun attachment which is removably attached to said gun.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my appli cation Serial No. 488,175, filed on February 9, 1955, entitled, Adaptable Paint Spray Shield, which has become abandoned. In my application Serial No. 545,678, filed on November 8, 1955, entitled, A Spray Device and an Adaptable and Flexible Spray Gun Attachment Which Is a Component Thereof and in said first-named application, I presented spray gun attachments comprising shielding means whereby a confined surface area could be sprayed Without using masking tape or other masking means to mask the wall areas not desired to be sprayed and without moving the shielding means abutting the wall surface. This was made possible by the utilization of the tension spring means being placed in combination with the other described component parts. With the device and attachment of this invention, it is possible to coat or paint a surface area having a straight edge coinciding with the straight edge of the surface area directly adjacent thereto without using masking means to mask the surface area not desired to be painted or coated. Also, by merely moving the device including the shielding means attached thereto continuously along the coinciding edges of the respective surface areas while operating the spray gun, and thereby spraying coating material or paint, a perfect line of demarcation is attained between the surface to be coated and the said other surface along said coinciding edges. The effective coverage of the surface to be coated with the perfect line of demarcation thereby attained is possible because of the fact'that the spray gun attachment shielding portion can be firmly held in an abutting relationship with the surface area to be coated at the straight edge thereof coinciding with the straight edge of the surface area directly adjacent to said former named surface area while the spray device including the said attachment is continuously moved along the said straight edge while the coating or spraying of the surface area is being accomplished. The aforementioned results obtained for the first time with the device and attachment do not require any expensive and complicated com-.
ponents, and the necessity for using masking means, which makes for additional costs in carrying out a painting or coating operation, is obviated.
The attachment here comprises a substantially fiat sheet of a stiff, flexible material having at least one straight edge which is positioned in abutting relationship with the edge of the surface area to be coated or sprayed, said surface area edge being straight and coinciding with the straight edge of that surface area directly adjacent thereto. In the terminology of the art, said attachment may barcferred to as a platform shield. This shield is particularly useful in painting the surface of an automobile body adjacent to the chrome trim after said surface has been worked upon, viz., removal of dents therefrom.
An object of this invention is to provide a spray gun attachment comprising a substantially flat shielding means, capable of being removably attached to a spray gun, for continuously spray-coating a surface area along its straight edge coinciding with the straight edge of the adjacent surface area desired to be masked by merely moving said shielding means and the spray gun attached there to along said edge, without the use of masking means such as masking tape.
A further object of this invention is to provide a spray device comprising, in combination, a spray gun and said substantially flat shielding means for continuously spraycoating 21 surface area along its straight edge coinciding with the straight edge of the adjacent surface area desired to be masked by merely moving said shielding means and said spray gun attached thereto along said edge, Without the use of masking means such as masking tape.
Other objects and features of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed description.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the spray device having in combination the spray gun and the spray gun attachment including the substantially flat shielding means in abutting relationship at a straight edge of the surface area to be sprayed.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-4! of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the substantially fiat sheet member of said shielding means shown in Figure 1.
More specifically, there is provided a spray gun 1 having attached at the barrel 2 thereof a clamping member 3 for receiving prongs 4, 4 of the spray gun attachment 5 including the substantially flat sheet 6 having the flange 7 attached to, and preferably integral with, it. The clamping member 3 can be of any configuration deending upon the type of spray gun used, and the shapes of the said member 3 and the spray gun I and its barrel 2 are merely shown here for purposes of illustration, and said specific configurations form no part of my invention.
Referring now to Figures 1, 2, and 3, and as clearly shown in said figures, the spray gun attachment 5 comprises the substantially tlat sheet 6 having the flange 7 attached thereto and preferably integral therewith, the clamping member 8 fixedly attached to sheet 6 by means of rivets 9, 9, 9, 9, the member 10 slidably positioned with respect to sheet 6 and extending between the raised portion of the clamping member 8, the bracket support member 11 comprising an angularly disposed portion 12 connected to, and preferably integral with, the member 10, and the member 13 connected to, and preferably integral with, member 12. Member 13 is angularly disposed with respect to the plane of sheet member ti, as is clearly shown. Fixedly attached to member 13 is the connecting member 14 which comprises a semi-circular portion 15 and flange members 16, 16, as shown. Prong members 4, 4 are fixedly attached to said flange members 16, 16 and are substantially perpendicular thereto, as shown, for engagement with the holes or receiving members of the clamping member 3 which is fitted about the barrel 2 of the gun 1. Clamping member 8 has a threaded hole 13 therethrough at the approximate central point of its raised portion and a nut 17 coincidingly positioned with said hole 18 and fixedly attached to said raised portion to receive the set screw 19. The sliding member 11} is positioned by extending it through clamping member 8 and tightening set screw 19 against it. The connecting member 14 and the prong members 4, 4 are on a plane P which is augularly disposed with respect to plane G which is perpendicular to sheet 6, as clearly shown in Figure 2. The nozzle of the spray gun and the prongs 4, i, at portions thereof, are positioned on a plane H extending from said nozzle to all points of the straight edge 29 of sheet 6, which edge abuts the straight edge of the surface B to be coated, said surface 3 being directly adjacent to the chromium plated surface 21 which is protected from the sprayed coating by said sheet 6, the straight edge of surface B coinciding with the straight edge of the said trim. However, the sheet 6 may be of other configurations but must have at least one straight edge for abutting the straight edge of the surface to be sprayed.
in finish coating a repaired portion of an automo body adjacent chrome trim or adjacent a portion of soautomobile body having a color different from that portion which has been repaired, it has been necessary to mask that portion of the body not repaired and of a color different from the repaired portion or to mask the chrome trim adjacent the repaired portion with masl tape, which is costly and tedious. Now With my device comprising, in combination, the spray gun and spray gun attachment, the job can be easily and economically done in the following manner:
The sliding member 10 is first positioned in such a manner that the nozzle of the spray gun falls on plane it which meets the straight edge 29 at all points thereof; said edge abutting the straight edge of the wall B of the re paired portion of the automobile or other surface to be coated, said straight edge of wall B coinciding with the straight edge of the chromium plated trim 23,. The bracket member 11 may be bent to compensate for the change in position brought about by moving the sliding member 10 towards or away from the surface 3, and this bending is done at the points at which the respective ends of the sliding member 10 and the bracket support member 132 meet. After the straight edge 26 of the flat sheet 6 is positioned in abutting relationship with the wall B at the straight edge thereof coinciding with the straight edge of the trim 21, the operator starts the spray" ing operation and moves the spray device along said edge of the wall B and the coinciding edge of the trim. Thus, there is obtained an evenly coated surface which had been previously repaired, and the coating material does not reach the said trim, thereby obviating the necessity for using masking tape to protect the trim from the coating material, which has been previously, prior to this invention, necessary and thereby preventing the waste of coating material.
The spray gun attachment here is preferably made of aluminum, which, as is well known, can be easily worked, and by aluminum is meant aluminum and its alloys.
Many alterations and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention which is set forth in the appended claims which are to be construed as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
I claim:
1. A spray gun attachment adapted to be removably attached to a spray gun for spraying a first surface area adjacent the straight edge of a second surface area, comprising, in combination, a shielding means for abutting said first surface area to be sprayed at the edge thereof coinciding with the edge of the said second surface area adjacent thereto, said shielding means including a substantially flat sheet of a stiff, flexible material having at least one straight edge, attaching means for removably attaching said shielding means to a spray gun, said attaching means being movable with respect to said shielding means, whereby a first surface area of the wall adjacent to an edge of a second surface area may be spraycoated without using masking means to mask the second surface area of the wall at points directly along said edge and whereby the said surface area to be coated may be continuously coated along its edge by merely moving the shielding means and the spray gun attached thereto along said edge.
2. A spray gun attachment adapted to be removably attached to a spray gun for spraying a first surface area adjacent the straight cage of a second surface area, comprising, in combination, a shielding means for abutting to area to be sprayed at the edge thereof vith the edge of the said second surface area adjacent thereto, said shielding means including a sub stantiaily flat sheet of stiff, flexible material having at least one straight edge, attaching means for removably ting means being operatively connected to said shielding means, at least a portion of said attaching means being positioned on a plane extending from the points at which said attaching means is removably attached to said spray gun to the uppermost point of said shielding means abutting said wall surface to be sprayed, whereby a first sur face of the wall adjacent to an edge of a second surface area may be spray-coated without using masking means to mask the second surface area at points directly along said edge and whereby the said surface area to be coated may be continuously coated along its edge by merely moving the shielding means and the spray gun att'ached thereto along said edge.
3. A spray device for spraying a first surface area adjacent the straight edge of a second surface area, comprising, in combination, a spray gun, a shielding means for abutting said first surface area to be sprayed at the edge thereof coinciding with the edge of the second surface area directly adjacent thereto, said shielding means including a substantially fiat sheet of a stiff, flexible material having at least one straight edge, attaching means for re movably attaching said shielding means to said spray gun, said attaching means being movable with respect to said shielding means, and means removably attached to said spray gun for receiving said attaching operatively connected to said shielding means, whereby a first surface area of the wall adjacent to an edge of a second surface area may be spray-coated without using masking means to mask the second surface area of the wall at points directly along said edge and whereby the said surface area to be coated may be continuously coated along its edge by merely moving the shielding means and the spray gun attached thereto along said edge.
4. A spray device for spraying a first surface area adjacent the straight edge of a second surface area, comprising, in combination, a spray gun, a shielding means for abutting said first surface area to be sprayed at the edge thereof coinciding with the edge of the second surface area directly adjacent thereto, said shielding means including a substantially flat sheet of a stiff, flexible material having at least one straight edge, attaching means for removably attaching said shielding means to said spray gun, said attaching means being operatively connected to said shielding means, at least a portion of said attaching means being positioned on a plane extending from the points at which said attaching means is removably attached tosaid spray gun to the uppermost point of said shielding means abutting said wall surface to be sprayed, and means reniovably attached to said spray gun for receiving said attaching means operatively connected to said shielding means, whereby a first surface area of the wall adjacent to an edge of a second surface area may be spray coated without using masking means to mask the second surface area of the wall at points directly along said edge and whereby the said surface area to be coated may be continuously coated along its edge by merely moving the shielding means and the spray gun attached thereto along said edge.
5. A spray gun attachment adapted to be removably attached to a spray gun for spraying a first surface area adjacent the straight edge of a second surface area, comprising, in combination, a substantially flat sheet of a stiff, flexible material having at least one straight edge, said sheet being adapted to abut said first surface area to be sprayed at the said edge of said first surface area coinciding with the edge of the second surface area adjacent thereto, a member slidably positioned on the top surface of said sheet, means for fixedly attaching said slidable member to said sheet at the said top surface thereof at a predetermined position with respect to the said straight edge of said sheet abutting the straight edge of the surface area to be sprayed, a bracket support member operatively connected to said slidable member, said bracket support member being downwardly angularly disposed with respect to said slidable mmber, and a pronged member fixedly attached to said bracket support member, whereby a first surface area of the wall adjacent to an edge of a second surface area may be spray coated without using masking means to mask the second surface area at points directly along said edge and whereby the said surface area to be coated may be continuously coated along its edge by merely moving the shielding means and the spray gun attached thereto along said edge.

A spray gun attachment adapted to be removably attached to a spray gun for spraying a first surface adjacent the straight edge on a second surface, comprising, in combination, a shielding means for abutting said first surface area to be sprayed at the edge thereof coinciding with the edge of the said second surface area adjacent thereto, said shielding means including a substantially flat sheet of a stiff, flexible material having at least one straight edge, attaching means for removably attaching. said shielding means to a spray gun, said attaching means including a member slidably positioned with respect to said fiat sheet, whereby a first surface area of the wall adjacent to an edge of a second surface area may be spray-coated without using masking means to mask the second surface area of the wall at points directly along said edge and whereby the said surface area to be coated may be continuously coated along its edge by merely moving the shielding means and the spray gun attached thereto along said edge.
