Description

July 1, 1958 o. N. ELDEN 2,841,317
CARRIER FOR CHAIN SAWS Filed June 6, 1957 IN VENTOR Oscar- N. E/c/em I ATTORNEY United States Patent CARREER FOR CHAIN SAWS Oscar N. Elden, Stockton Springs, Maine Application June 6, 1957, Serial No. 663,963
3 Claims. (1. 224-) This invention relates to a pack carrier and more particularly to a carrier for chain saws and it consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations herein described and claimed.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a chain saw carrier in the form of a planiform board, upon one face of which there are mounted a pair of hanger members in the form of upwardly opening loops adapted to seat the horizontal forward bar portion of a chain saw, while the lower end of the carrier is provided with a pocket shaped to receive and support the grip portion of the handle of the chain saw, and when so positioned upon the carrier, the saw proper will be supported in an upright position to one side of the carrier and thus with the pack carrier supported by strap member to the back of a Woodsman, the saw will not interfere with normal movements of the Woodsman, and that the chain saw may be conveniently transported from place to place as required.
Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the carrier, illustrating portions of a chain saw in dotted lines, with hand bar and handle portions in solid lines and engaged in respective hangers and the pocket of the carrier.
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the carrier as seen from the rear, illustrating the pack carrying straps.
Figure 4 is a vertical section through one of hangers.
There is illustrated a carrier for a chain saw generally indicated by the reference character which comprises a planiform board 11 upon the front face 12 of which there are mounted a pair of upwardly opening hangers 13 and as best seen in Figures 2 and 4, the hangers are formed from strap metal bent to form a bight portion 14, the inner face of which is provided with a lining 15 for protection of the cross bar of a saw when positioned therein. One leg 16 of the hanger is longer than the other and is formed with a pair of apertures 17 adapted to be aligned with a pair of apertures 18 formed in the board 11. A suitable fastener, such as a screw 19 Secures the leg 16 to the board. Additional apertures 18 arranged transversely of the board are provided permitting securement of the hangers 13 so as to accommodate varying widths of chain saws.
2,841,317 Patented July 1, 1958 The legs of the hangers 13 are also provided with aligned openings 20 spaced above the bight portion 14 and receive a thumb bolt 21 for retaining the horizontal cross bar portion 22 of the chain saw indicated at 23.
At the lower portion of the board 11 on the front face 12, an offset pocket 24 is formed, the front wall of which is provided with a vertically extending opening 25 for accommodation of a portion 26 of the chain saw handle 27.
-In order that the carrier may be suspended from the shoulders of a Woodsman, a pair of adjustable straps 28 are employed, the ends 29 of which are secured to the front wall 12 in the medial longitudinal center thereof as at 30. The other ends of the straps are provided with respective snap hooks 31 which are complemental to eyelets 32 fixed in respective vertical edges of the board 11.
In order to mount the chain saw upon the carrier 11 it is only necessary to remove the thumb bolts 20 so that the cross bar 22 may be aligned with the hangers 13. The handle 27 of the saw is next aligned with the offset pocket 24 and the slot 25 and moved thereinto which will also seat the cross bar 22 within the hangers 13. The thumb bolts 21 are then replaced. The securely mounted saw carrier may be readily supported from the shoulders of a Woodsman as will be obvious.
While 'I have shown and described a preferred form of the carrier, this is by way of illustration only, and I consider as my own all such modifications in construction as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A carrier for chain saws comprising a support board, strap members for suspending said board from the shoulders of a Woodsman, a pair of upwardly opening hanger members adjacent one end of said board and secured thereto adapted to receive a cross bar of the saw therebetween, and an upwardly opening offset pocket at the other end of said board said pocket having a front wall, said front wall having a vertically disposed opening for receiving a portion of the handle of the saw.
2. A carrier for chain saws comprising a support board, strap means for suspending said board from the shoulders of a Woodsman, a pair of laterally spaced upwardly opening hanger members mounted upon the board adjacent one end thereof adapted to receive a cross bar of the saw therebetween, an upwardly opening pocket offset from the board and positioned at the other end of the board, the front wall of the pocket having a vertically disposed opening for receiving portions of the saw handle therethrough and said hanger members having thumb bolts for securing said .cross bar therewithin.
3. The structure of claim 2, wherein said hanger members may be adjusted to varying lateral positions on the support board.
