2 Claims. (Cl. 107-67) This invention relates in general we bakers peel and is more particularly described as a proofing board or proofing peel having a protector at the attachment end of the peel for protecting it from wear and tear caused by applying a hook attachment thereto.

In the usual bakers peel, a metal plate is inserted in Patented June 24, 195s 2 the handle bracket; some peels having a plate which projects on top of the peel so that it is usable from one side only. This also requires additional space at the top of a peel and is set into shallow recesses at the opposite a slot at the rear edge which extends forwardly in the plate, and an opening is provided through the plate which is engaged by a projection of a handle bracket. This construction is heavy, expensive, and usually requires a' strengthening cross piece.

The present invention relates particularly to a handle attachment clip which engages both sides of a peel with a protected opening extending between the extremities of the clip and both faces of the clip are flush with the face of the pool so that more unobstructed space is added to the upper face of the peel, thereby increasing the capacity or making it possible to provide a peel of shorter length to do the same work.

An important object of the invention is to provide a *bakers peel having a protector which can be made of one or two pieces of material with a grommet or bushing connecting the ends of the clip through the peel.

A further object of the invention is to provide a protector of light weight which is set into the peel on both sides thereof so that the outer surfaces are flush with the surfaces of the peel, leaving no cracks or openings for the collection of dirt and providing a sanitary peel construction.

A further object of the invention is to provide a clip extending from the rear over both sides of the peel to avoid weakening of the peel at the rear end by slots and rivets for attaching the clip in place.

vStill a further object of the invention is to provide a .bakers peel in which the protector applied to the end thereof is the same on *both sides so that a handle can be .applied to one side or the other with the same facility edge portion cut out for receiving a peel protector which is applied thereto.

In a 'bakers peel, it is desirable to provide a handle which may be quickly engaged or disengaged from the peel blade by correspondingly applying the handle there- .to and at either side thereof. Some of the attachments now commonly used require a considerable portion at the end of the blade which must be used for engagement of sides thereof so that the outside faces of the clip. are flush with both surfaces of the peel.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, a bakers peel 10 which may be used as a proofing peel oi a proofing board may be made of plywoodor other suitable materials such as plastic, metal and the like. It may be made of uniform thickness throughout its length and-either with or without a chamfered end 12 as desired.

At the other end of the-peel is an end recess 14 with beveled side edges 16 extending through the full thickness of the peel Extendinginwardly on both sides of thepeel is a shallow recess 18 of uniform depth preferably with inwardly tapering sides and a rounded end 20. Near the rounded end and preferably concentric therewith is a perforation 22 Which extends entirely through the peel at a distance from the end and at a distance from the end recess 14. 7

Into the recesses thus provided at the end of the peel, a covering protector clip 24 is applied which is generally U-shaped and formed of metal, plastic, or other suitable material, the side portions 26 of which are of the same shape as the recesses 18 at opposite sides of the peel so that the clip fits tightly in the recesses when it is set into the end recess 14.

The outer extremity of each side portion 26 is rounded to conform to the rounded ends 20 of the recesses 18 and in the rounded extremities of the clip are perforations 28 vwhich register with each other and with the perforation 22 through the peel.

In order to fasten the ends of the clip together, a sleeve 30 is either formed integral with one of the sides of the clip (Fig. 4) or separately formed and attached thereto by rigidly attaching or expanding one edge 32 in contact with one side 26 of the clip (Fig. 3). In applying the clip over the end of a peel with the sleeve 30 attached thereto, the sides are spread slightly apart as shown in Fig. 4 so that the sleeve 30 will pass over the recesses 18 at both sides of the peel to seat the sleeve 30 in the perforation 22. By pressing the opposite sides 26 together, the sleeve will project through the opening 28 in the other side of the fastening clip and this projecting edge 34 "may be expanded outwardly against the sides of the opening 28 of this side of the clip, the sleeve being thus rounded and pressed from both sides thereof to form an eyelet or grommet for the engagement of a handle.

A handle 36 commonly used for peels of this'type comprises a flat extension 38 with a circular projection 40 at the outer end adapted to engage in the eyelet of the protector clip and with aninclined ledge 42 at a distance spaced from the projection 40 such that when the projection 40 engages the eye of the protector clip, the inclinedledge 42 will engage over the connecting end of the clip which is set into the recess 14. 7

With this construction, the handle is not easily disengaged from the peel since it is restrained against side movement by the inclined side edges 16. With this construction, the grommet or bushing forming the eye of the protector clip can easily be inserted from one side into the hole of a peel and the opposite part of the clip is pressed down to fit over the bushing so that the edges thereof can be flanged out or riveted at both sides thereof or at one side if the bushing is attached to one side the clip.

Since the protector clip is fitted into the peel to the depth of thethickness of the material, the surface of the peel and the protector will be smooth onboth sides. Thus the peelcan be used both as a proofing peel or a proofing board and is adapted for use inany type of oven such as atr'avelling oven, a revolving oven,'-'a brick oven, and the like.

While a .preferred form of the invention has been described in somedetaiL'it should'beregarded as an illustration or example rather than as a limitation or restric tion of the invention, since various changes in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts may ;be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. i 1

2 A bakers peel in accordance with claim 1, in which each side of the peel is formed with a shallow recess extending inwardly from the recess in the rear edge of the blade, and the sides of the protector clip are seated in the shallow recesses flush with the sides of the peel and conforming closely to the shape of the said rear edge recess and shallow recesses to provide a clean and sanitary construction.
