FIG. 8
United States Patent 6 2,839,971 BOX MAKING AND ASSEMBLING MACHINES Louis Triolo, Brooklyn, N. Y. 7
Application September 3, 1954, Serial No. 454,058
3 Claims. (CI. 93-39) This invention relates to box-making and assembling machines and relates more particularly to an automatic machine for operating on a flat, unfolded, wrapped blank to form the same into a generally rectangular box in the nature of a sleeve with opposed open ends, then moving a previously formed sliding tray or insert into the box, and finally discharging the finished box from the machine.
The flat, wrapped blank which is fed to the present machine to be formed into the sleeve may be prepared by hand or machine and it is preferred to employ for this purpose the machine which forms the subject matter of my copending application, Serial No. 454,059, filed September 3, 1954.
The blank is of elongated shape and has four sections separated by skived folding lines dividing the blank into upper and lower wall sections and side wall sections and the label or Wrapper preferably encloses the longitudinal edges of the blank and in any event it has one adhesive, unadhered end flap. The machine of the present invention folds the top, bottom and intermediate side walls of the wrapped blank around a mandrel, folds the opposite side wall into abutting relationship with the free edge of the top or bottom wall and then adheres the.
adhesive end flap of the label on said latter side wall, thus forming the sleeve, and then moves the tray into the sleeve and finally discharges the two-part box.
An important object of the invention is to provide a machine capable of performing the foregoing operations efiiciently and economically and at a high rate of speed.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as. this specification proceeds.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a broken elevation showing the mandrel upon which the sleeve is wrapped and the ends joined together.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the mandrel and wrapper assembly and showing part of the tray delivering mechanism.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the mandrel and the folding means and showing the box partially wrapped around the mandrel.
Fig. 4 is similar to Fig. 3 but shows the final end wall folded against the mandrel.
Fig. 5 shows the sleeve completely formed and ready to be discharged from the mandrel.
Fig. 6 is a plan view similar to Fig. 2 but shows the mandrel in forward position and ready to be retracted as the tray is pushed into the sleeve.
Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 7--7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is an elevation similar to Fig. 7 and showing the tray moved partially into the sleeve.
Fig. 9 shows the position of the parts after the box has been completely assembled and discharged into the delivery chute.
ice
side wall 15 at the leading edge of the blank as it travels to the assembling machine of the present invention. The blank is transversely skived, as shown at 16, to providesharp corners for the box between the wall sections.
The label, whose inner surface was given an all-over" adhesive coating, is initially wider than the box blank and the opposed longitudinal margins have been ad-- hesively secured to the inner surface of the box blank to form finished edges in thesleeve. The label blank is also longer than the box blank and the remaining unadhered portion of the label is the transverse flap 21 which is finally adhered to free side wall 15 to complete the sleeve before introduction of the tray.
A cam shaft with plural cam elements control operation of all the moving parts of the machine in timed sequence. Since cams of this character are well known in the automatic box machinery art no details of the cam,
the followers or of the linkage connections between the followers and the moving parts are shown.
In the combining machine for the box blank and label a reciprocating carriage 22 is mounted for sliding movement on a fixed rod 23. A suction block 24 delivers the completed wrapped blank to the position shown at '10 in Fig. 1 after which jaws 25-46, pivoted on a bracket 27, also mounted on the carriage, grasp the blank, now
positioned on platen 28, and the carriage moves to the left, delivering the blank to the position shown at 10 in Fig. '1. Opening and closing of the movable jaw 25 is controlled by link 30.
It will be understood that if the combined blanks are manually wrapped or are prepared by any machine other than that disclosed in my co-pe nding application, any
suitable means may be employed for feeding the combined blanks to the position shown at 10 in Fig. 1.
Jaws 25--26 havemoved the laminated blank to a position wherein the intermediate end'wall section 14 of the blank lies directly under a mandrel 31 and the opposed wall sections 12 and 13 overlie presser plates 32 and 33 wherein wall sections 12 and 13 are in a position to be wrapped around the forming mandrel.
The'presserplates are secured to brackets 34 which are pivoted on fixed pins 35 and the presser plates are moved upwardly to press the side walls against the mandrel by means of a bifurcated driving plunger 36 whose opposed legs 37-38 are provided with pins 41, which pass into slots 42 which curve downwardly at their outer ends.
A vertically reciprocating presser block 43 moves up-- wardly to press intermediate side wall section 14 of the: box into engagement with the lower surface of the man-- drel at the same instant as the plunger moves upwardly to move the presser plates to the position of Fig. 3.
Two presser feet 44 and 45 which act with a wiping ac tion now come into operation. Both these feet have a common pivot 46 on a bracket 49. Presser foot 44 first. moves inwardly to and past the position of Fig. 4 so that its toe portion 51 (Fig. 4) presses side wall 15 firmly against the upper wall of the mandrel to a point where: it makes a butt joint with the upper end of the wall 13,. at which time presser foot 45 having a brush instantly moves gummed flap 21 downwardly wiping it over the upper wall 15, iaS shown in Fig. 5, and forming the fin-- ished sleeve 50.
A plunger 52 on which the mandrel is supported now moves from the position of Fig. 2 to the position of Fig. 7 where a tray 53 can be inserted into the open-ended box or sleeve. The mandrel comes to rest at the position of Fig. 7 wherein the sleeve is positioned just above a delivery chute 54 for the completed and assembled two- Patented June 24, 1958 3 rest on a flanged track 56. When the box sections are aligned (Fig 8) a pusher60 mounted on plunger 61 moves the tray forwardly into the sleeve and as the tray moves into the sleeve the mandrel commences to retract to its starting position. K
As the tray moves forwardly into the position of Fi g. 6 a'spring-retracted pawl 62 in the line of travel of the sleeve and pivoted on a bracket 63 is moved inwardly until the sleeve hasmoved just clear of the pawl, which latter acts as a stop to prevent return movement of the sleeve as theforming mandrel returns to starting position.
Pusher 60 moves to the right (Fig. 8) conjointly with the retraction of mandrel 31 and when the latter has been withdrawn from the sleeve thetwo-part box has no support and falls into chute 54. i
A lever 65 connected with pawl 62 may have means associated therewith for idling pusher 61 if no box is delivered by mandrel 31.
