Application August 25, 1953, Serial No. 376,380
1 Claim. (Cl. 211-43) This invention relates to a filler and book support and more particularly to a filler adapted to be used in a book case to retain the books supported therein in a vertical position.
An object of this invention is to provide a filler for book shelves so that books will not lean and have their bindings or covers become twisted out of shape.
Another object of the invention is to provide a filler to improve the appearance of book shelves by keeping all the books standing neatly.
A further object of this invention is to provide a filler which is adjustable to allow use in various sized openings.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a means allowing easier removal or replacement of books.
on a shelf.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the preferred form of the present invention mounted in a book case;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the present invention with the covering removed;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the means for adjusting the size of the filler;
Figure 4 is a detail view of the means for mounting the front or end Wall of the filler;
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken substantially along the section line 55 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a top view of the improved form of filler forming the subject of this invention.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the improved filler and book support forming the subject of the invention includes, as shown in Figure 1, a filler 10 mounted between books 12 in a book case 14.
The filler 10 is formed of a pair of spaced, opposed side walls 16 and an end wall 18. Each of the walls 16 is provided with a flange 2% at one edge thereof. The flanges 20 extend toward one another and are aligned with each other. An angle shaped member or bracket 22 is secured to each side wall 16 adjacent the flanges 20. The brackets 22 have a leg portion parallel to and spaced from the flanges 20 and the sides of the end wall 18 is adapted to be received in the spaces between the brackets 22 and the flanges 20.
Means is provided for moving the side Walls toward and away from each other in parallelism. This means is comprised of a pair of spaced, parallel lazy tongs including a first and second pair of links 24 and 26 secured between the side walls 16. The pairs of links are pivotally secured at their upper ends, each pair to one of the side walls 16 adjacent the upper ends thereof. The lower ends of each pair of links are secured adjacent the bottoms of the opposite walls 16. The walls 16 are provided with brackets 28 extending therefrom adjacent the bottom thereof. Each of the brackets 28 is provided with a slot 39 therein which slots receive pins secured to the lower ends of the links. When the walls are moved with respect to one another the links pivot about their upper ends and the lower ends of the links slide in the slots 30 in the brackets 28.
Each of the links is provided with an aperture adjacent its midpoint. A nut 32 is secured to the outer side of one of the outer links and in aligned relationship with the apertures. A shaft 34 having a head or hub portion 36 at one end and a threaded portion 38 at the other end extends through the apertures. A spacer sleeve 40 is mounted about the shaft and between the links and spacer sleeve 42 is mounted on the shaft between the links and the hub portion 36. The hub portion 36 is provided with a transverse aperture therethrough which receives a lever bar or operating handle 44. By turning the lever bar the threaded portion of the shaft will turn into the nut thereby tightening the sleeves against the links to retain the links in fixed position.
When the side walls are adjusted an end wall of appropriate size is mounted between the Walls in the spaces above mentioned. If desired, a covering resembling a book covering is then applied over the filler. Then the filler is inserted in the book case.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A filler and book support comprising: a pair of spaced, opposed vertical side walls including inturned vertical marginal flanges, angle members mounted on the inner faces of the side walls in spaced, opposed relation to the flanges and defining open-end channels in conjunction therewith, a removable end wall having its vertical marginal portions slidably engaged in the channels, and means connecting the side walls for adjustment toward or away from each other in parallelism, said means comprising a pair of spaced, parallel lazy tongs including crossed links operatively connected at their ends to said side walls, a nut fixed on one of said links, a shaft pivotally adjustably connecting the crossed links and threadedly engaged in the nut, a head on one end of said shaft, an operating handle on said head, and sleeves on the shaft engaged with the lazy tongs and with the head for frictionally clamping the links in adjusted position when the shaft is tightened in the nut.
