1 Claim. CI. 77-62) This invention relates to improved doweling jigs for use in a vise.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a doweling jig of this character which involves laterally and longitudinally adjustable boring tool guide means.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, specific embodiments of the invention are set forth in detail.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a 'doweling jig embodying the features of this invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view of the adjusable doweling jig;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention; and
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 77 of Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and first to Figures 1 to 5 thereof, the device therein shown comprises a longitudinally elongated vertical rectangular plate 10, having an elongated longitudinally extending slot 14 therein near its upper edge 12. The upper edge 12 is provided therealong with a row of scale marks 16, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The device further comprises a horizontal rectangular bed plate 18 shorter than the plate 10, and having on its inner longitudinal edge an upwardly extending flange 22 which lies perpendicularly to the bed plate 18 and is provided adjacent opposite ends with internally screw threaded openings 24 for the reception of headed guide pins 26 which project through the slot 14 in the plate and threadedly engage the openings 24 to hold the flange 22 slidably engaged with the inner side of the plate 10. The flange 22 is further provided between the holes 24 with a bolt receiving opening 28 which receives a headed bolt 30 which extends through the slot 14 and has thereon a wing nut 32 arranged to be tightened to hold the bed plate 18 in a selected position of longitudinal adjustment along the plate 10. An index 34 extends across the upper edge 21 of the flange 22 for cooperation with the scale 16 previously referred to.
A transversely elongated boring tool receiving slot 36 is provided in the plate 18 midway between its ends, and in parallel relation to the slot 36 are guide carriage slots 38 and 40 near the opposite ends of the plate 18. A scale 42 is carried by the plate 18 along the slot 40 for a purpose to be more fully hereinafter described.
A carriage designated generally 44 comprises an elongated plate 46 having on one end a depending guide 165 Patnt flange 48 which, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, is engaged in the guide slot 40 to hold the carriage 44 in parallel relation to the flange 22. The plate 46 is provided intermediate its ends with an opening 50 in line with the slot 36, and a boring tool guide bushing or tube 32 is secured to and extends perpendicularly upwardly from the body 46 in registration with the opening 50, as will be readily understood upon reference to Figure 2. Extending through the slot 38 and plate 46 adjacent the end thereof remote from the guide flange 48 is a headed bolt 56 which projects upwardly through the carriage guide slot 38 in the bed plate 18 and is equipped with a wing nut 58 on its upper end which is arranged .to be tightened to hold the carriage 44 in a selected position of transverse adjustment relative to the bed plate 10.
In use, work W is engaged against the part of the plate 10 below the bed plate 18, and with the underside of the bed plate, and then placed in a vise with one jaw engaging the outer side of the plate 10, and with the other vise jaw engaging .the work on the side thereof remote from the plate 10. The wing nut 32 is then backed off and the bed plate 18 is moved longitudinally along the plate 10 to a selected position and the nut 32 tightened to hold the adjustment. The wing nut 58 is then loosened and the carriage 44 shifted toward or away from the flange 22 to a selected position and the nut 58 tightened to hold the adjustment. A boring tool may then be introduced through the upper end of the boring tool guide bushing 52, and a correctly positioned dowel hole will then be bored in the work W.
In the modified form of the invention, shown in Figures 6 and 7, a plate 60 carries adjacent one longitudinal side edge a bed plate 62 which extends perpendicularly from the clamping plate 66 and is provided at selected locations with the openings 64 with which boring tool guide bushings 66 are registered. With the work W engaging the plate 60 and placed in a vise, as suggested in Figure 7, it will be evident that upon introducing a boring tool through any of the bushings 66, accurately located dowel holes will be bored in the work W.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
In a doweling jig, a vertical work engaging plate having an upper edge, a horizontal bed plate having an inner edge, a vertical longitudinal flange fixed on said inner edge and bearing slidably against a side of said Work engaging plate, bolt and slot means connecting said flange to the work engaging plate, a carriage, means mounting said carriage on said bed plate for adjustment toward and away from said vertical flange, said carriage having an opening, and a tubular vertical boring tool guide bushing fixed on said carriage and registered with said opening, said bed plate having a transversely elongated boring tool receiving opening beneath said bushing, said mounting means comprising transverse slots in said carriage, a depending flange on the carriage engaging one of the slots, and a bolt on said carriage engaging another of said slots.
